<6> hey all -- i'm trying to make an appliance out of an older laptop, and instead of buying a harddrive i decided to go with a usb stick (yeah it'll be slow, oh well who cares). SO, the laptop is too old to be able to boot form uSB, so i made a floppy disk, but when i boot with root=/dev/sda1 it says sda1 isn't valid.. any ideas?

<24> _AxS_: You have to use an initrd only if you have to use a kernel that has vital hardware support compiled as a module. No need for initrd if you're compiling your own kernels, you only have to compile everything necessary in.
