<5> can I mount a readonlly filesystem as nfsroot ? <7> gnome for home, console for work :) <3> mbishop: still learn stuff every day <6> kos__: gnome is deprecated :) <1> slackgen: I started in 1999, started using it full time in 2001 or so :\ <3> mbishop: i find the subtle differences between the distros interesting, ive gone throguh about 12 distros int he last month or two <7> i dont see why there has to be so many distros <1> I've used a handful, most just annoy me <7> its a waste of developers <3> ive only used about three that i actually stayed with for over a day <8> to set the default runlevel in /etc/inittab, do i just change the number in: id:3:initdefault: ? <1> any distro that doesn't install gcc and kernel sources really isn't worth using heh <3> slackware, gentoo, and debian-unstable <8> the handbook avoids the issue <7> ive only ever given slackware and gentoo over 5hours <3> wide-eye: yes <8> slackgen: k thx <3> wide-eye: change the 3 to the one you want <3> kos__: what do you mean? <9> anyone knows why is gentoo-portage so slow at adopting newer versions? <0> tie_, what do you mean? <9> I had to manually isntall SQLite and pysqlite because in portage they were too old <10> tie_, cause some1 has to create ebuilds for these newer versions and put them there? thats my guess. <9> KDE 3.5 is also not present in portage I think <8> has anyone seen or made a livecd boot over the net, ie pxe, nfsroot etc? <10> tie_, kde 3.5 has been in portage for a while now <11> tie_: the latest version of pysqlite is in portage afaik (~arch masked though) <0> tie_, you haven't read any docs on using portage I guess. <9> klingon: you are correct but FreeBSD are much faster in my experience <11> tie_: you probably need to read up on masked packages. Try the following: <0> tie_, I'm running kde 3.5.1 <11> mzbot: gentoo tie_ mixing software branches <12> tie_: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=3&chap=3 <13> splash_geninitramfs dosn't show the splash until after activating swap <9> thanks for the doc <0> tie_, you can check versions of packages at packages.gentoo.org or gentoo-portage.com <9> hmm didn't know there was a web interface <14> Does anyone know if there is any reason I should have support for /proc/kcore in a server? <15> is there any tool/program to check all broken symlinks on a filesystem, I have a bunch of broken symlinks on my Projetcs folder, and I need a tool to find them... <5> can I mount a readonlly filesystem as NFSroot ? <16> drew_kay: not really, and I don't either <17> does anyone know a WLAN chipset that has a linux-driver with working power-management? <14> drac: Thanks, I'm just in the process of tweaking my grsec kernel & with the in place /dev/kmem & /dev/mem restrictions it seemed sorta pointless. <18> Is it okay to delete /usr/portage/distfiles ? It's 1.8G! <2> deadaim: yes <18> rsk: ok thank you! :) <15> deadaim: yes if you're not using dial-up <18> LinuxBlues: I'm not :) <15> :-) deadaim rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* too <15> (if you aren't compiling right now) <18> LinuxBlues: I just did "cd /usr/portage/distfile" "rm *" <18> LinuxBlues: should I remove the folder cvs-src ? <3> can you use distcc to compile the kernel during installation? <15> deadaim: use eclean <18> LinuxBlues: I don't have that command <19> can I please ask a p2p question....? <20> on a remote PC, the user is not able to print from a USB printer via CUPS. Is localhost:613 alwasy accessible even if network is not available due to Dial-up? <19> anybody familiar w/ valknut <20> I was able to before. Any help, please? <15> deadaim: I have an alias to rm -rf /usr/portage/distfiles/* && rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* in root's .bashrc you need to copy all the files like .bash_profile from /etc/skel/ to make it work though <3> or a better question: how can you make all things compiled from portage use distcc?
<15> deadaim: I meant cp /etc/skel/* /root/ edit .bashrc and add an alias ;-) <21> damn i downgraded from xorg 7 to xorg 6.8 and now now 32bit app is working they all segfault :( <21> anyone experienced same thing <18> LinuxBlues: I can also delete /var/tmp/portage? <15> deadaim: yes, if you aren't emerging any program right now <14> slackgen: ***uming it's emerged and setup correctly, just make sure the following line in in /etc/make.conf exists: FEATURES="distcc" <22> Where is the world cl*** stored? <3> drew_kay: thanks <23> are their any pure kde multi-protocal chat clients that don't use GTK? <21> kopete <23> PhanLordIRC: it uses gtk ... according to 'emerge --pretend kde-base/kopete' <21> it shoudlnt be using gtk its part of kde <15> Jessica1: you mean /var/lib/portage/world ? <14> slackgen: If you have ccache emerged place it there as well. Mine looks like this: FEATURES="distcc ccache" <21> if kde uses gtk then koete uses gtk <3> drew_kay: where should i set DISTCC_HOSTS? <23> gtk+ is one of the libs emerge wants to merge for kopete <23> kde uses qt, last I checked ... <22> LinuxBlues I believe that's preciecely what I mean. <21> yeha thats why kopete is not using gtk <15> ok <21> maybe some other depndency wants gtk <21> add -gtk in make.conf <23> [ebuild NS ] x11-libs/gtk+-1.2.10-r11 <-- that means it wants to merge gtk+ ... no ? <21> what is the whole list <23> -gtk -gnome are in my use flags in make.conf <3> drew_kay: or in that part of setting up gtk <15> zoul: disable gtk2 too <23> http://rafb.net/paste/results/FIjnty67.html <3> drew_kay: or in that part of setting up ***distcc <21> ther eis something else that is trying to get gtk and specially the old gtk, which koete definelty wouldnt use <23> -gtk2 ... still has gtk+ <14> slackgen: You mean which hosts should your local copy of distcc contact to compile? <15> zoul: and? so -gtk2 -gtk <19> can anybody help me with valknut....? <23> LinuxBlues: -gtk2 -gtk -gnome are in my make.conf <3> drew_kay: yes, i havent set up distcc on my gentoo box yet but on slackware you did export DISTCC_HOSTS=192.168.1.1/24 then make CC=distcc <24> Here's a weirdo issue with portage and kde. I'm trying to get rid of KDE completely (and perhaps start fresh). I've got kdelibs-2.2.2 and cannot get rid of it. emerge -aC kdelibs shows selected: 3.0.5a 3.4.3-r1 2.2.2-r4 3.0.2 3.3.2-r9 3.1.4 3.2.3-r2 and it chokes on 2.2.2 with inheritence issues. Advice on whacking this manually? Can't figure it out from forums. <3> drew_kay: where do i set to use those hosts? <14> remote hosts should be listed in: /etc/distcc/hosts with them all on one line in order of priority. <3> thanks <23> ahh, it must have been the xmms stuff ... <15> zoul: use emerge -vpt whatever_you_were_trying_to_emerge to get a list of deps <23> USE="-xmms" emerge --pretend kde-base/kopete <23> just shows kopete ;) <25> whats going on with portage??? i keep getting make errors when updating world lately <25> !!! ERROR: app-emulation/wine-0.9.8-r1 failed. <25> Call stack: ebuild.sh, line 1928: Called dyn_compile <23> apparently xmms requires gtk ... <25> zoul: use noxmms for gtk free <26> a little doubt - from stage 2, after of run emerge -e system, is necessary run source /etc/profile; etc-update? <23> loopy: noxmms? <24> Actually, it might be choking on 3.0.5a first... <25> zoul: noxmms = cli gui bloat free app <14> slackgen: emerge automatically uses distcc once you add the features line in make.conf <21> zoul yeah xmms uses gtk 1 and xmms2 uses gtk2 <15> BleSS: stage2 isn't supported anymore, so you're on your own... <27> # Compile with these changes: <27> # - makefile without -DETSI <0> BleSS, etc-update yes <23> hrm ... <26> LinuxBlues, yes, i know it, anyway i follow compiling my system from stage1 without any problem <26> roger55, thanks <25> anyone else having problems with emerge -uD world? <23> there a nice alternative to xmms that's similiar ... with skinning ... not one of those flaky 'media player' like players? <25> first it was the time zone data that failed to compile, now it's wine <0> loopy, I've seen someone today who had the same problem, check bugs.gentoo.org <2> zoul: beep-media-player <27> help me <27> # Compile with these changes: <27> # - makefile without -DETSI <0> lizz, what are you talking about? <27> hello roger55 <25> roger55: ok
