<0> /var/tmp (I meant)
<1> LinuxBlues: I did this mount -t tmpfs tmpfs -o size=500M,nr_inodes=1M /var/tmp/portage
<2> Simm3rS: I already told you what package it's in.
<3> Bleezy: if your login name is Bleezy, than that is your problem (but seems unlikely since you can log in)
<4> no not there
<5> blackace: thanks. but emerge want me to install perl as a dependency. i'm trying to optimize for space and perl is a bit bulky
<6> Is there anyone who can help me sort out my java? I installed JRE then realised I actualy needed JDK. So I installed JDK and followed the java instructions (settings vms ).... but when I type "java -version" It says java runtime environment
<2> Simm3rS: then turn the perl useflag off.
<0> hawking: you're swapping out all your system except kernel if you only have 512Mb of ram, but emerge MUST be faster
<5> :) didnt think of that!
<2> Kwipt: set your vm to the jdk using java-config
<6> Yes I did
<1> LinuxBlues: the thing I wonder is ... let's say I use tmpfs and emerge xorg-x11 . I read in the wiki that a 850M tmpfs is needed for that and I have 500Mb .. what will happen then? I mean when tmpfs is full? will it raise an error or will it go on writing to harddisk
<3> Bleezy: interesting. do you have something like this in /etc/p***wd? osugi:x:1000:100::/home/osugi:/bin/bash
<2> Kwipt: env-update && . /etc/profile
<3> Bleezy: your login name instead of osugi

<4> Osugi: no
<7> i am running amd64 and have an ati radeon card. I have emerged ati-drivers successfully, configured the kernel properly (agpgart and amd64 agp enabled) and i have successfully used fglrxconfig to configure my xorg file. however, fglrx (when modprobed) returns an error. Can anyone help?
<4> -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2150400 Feb 23 22:10 install_flash_player_7_linux.ta/
<3> Bleezy: type (no quotes) "whoami" in a terminal. what does it tell you?
<7> my kernel version is linux-2.6.15-r5
<6> Done that too blackace, I still get 'Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, standard edition' when I do java -version
<0> hawking: by the way, you will be unable to compile OOo for example, or xorg-x11, no no tmpfs it's a bad idea, you'll get an "Out of Space error"
<1> LinuxBlues: I see... so I'll just use it for small packages
<0> it will be unable to compile them
<1> LinuxBlues: thanks for making me figure that out
<2> Kwipt: java always says runtime, is javac in your path? does which javac show you the path to the jdk?
<8> LinuxBlues: not if you own about 4gig of ram ;)
<1> LinuxBlues: and the optimal tmpfs size is RAM/2 right?
<0> bluebird__: well, neither with 16Gb of ram
<9> hey guys, i got an error with my grub and i cant seem to access my windows partition =/
<6> Sorry i'm a bit of a newb, what command am I supposed to type blackace?
<0> hawking: not the optimal it is the default if you don't add partameters as you did
<2> Kwipt: ... 'which javac'
<6> Yes it points to jdk
<10> wizo: pastebin your grub.conf, or paste it in #flood, an I can take a look at it for you..
<2> Kwipt: then you're set.
<9> TheRAt: okies
<6> Hmm okays..
<6> ty
<1> LinuxBlues: yeah I know that... and what's the optimal size? I mean when I use all of the RAM for it , it's likely to cause problems right?
<11> portage scares me
<10> kos: y ?
<11> guess u just have to trust it
<0> hawking: it probably swap out all your system (kde, gnome and so on.... and it will make it awfully slow)
<12> I'm using gentoo sparc, which only has the 2.4 kernel. Any idea if devfs was stable at that point in time? (Considered experimental)
<9> TheRAt: do i memo you the link?
<10> or paste it here
<11> TheRAt, just the whole dependency and ordering...
<9> TheRAt: http://pastebin.com/573061
<0> hawking: never tested it though
<10> wizo: looking at it now...
<1> LinuxBlues: so making it slow is the only error it might cause right? I mean can it cause other errors as well?
<0> hawking: no, I don't think so, except out of space errors while compiling stuff
<9> TheRAt: okies, thanks. I reinstalled windows, and then relised that my bootloader was overwritten and wasnt able to get into gentoo, therefore with teh help of someone, i managed to set up grub to access gentoo, but i realised that i cant get into my windows partition with the error: invalid device requested
<1> LinuxBlues : ok thanks
<4> Osugi: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2150400 Feb 23 22:10 install_flash_player_7_linux.ta
<13> hi guys
<3> Bleezy: did you try "whoami"?
<13> you probaly know aircrack
<10> wizo: what is your windows partition ??
<1> is it a bug that acpid causes clock skew or does it have to run together with ntp-client?
<6> blackace, do you have any idea why I get "-cl***path command not found" when I try and run some java?
<14> hm, something on my machine is using 200mb, what's the best way to find out what it is?
<3> Bleezy: Is that /home/ ?
<10> wizo: /dev/hda1 ?
<4> root
<9> TheRAt: according to fdisk, /dev/hda1 * 1 19380 9767488+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
<9> TheRAt: /dev/hda1 i presume
<15> hi
<3> Bleezy: so you are logged in as root. Sounds like your user doesn't exist or doesn't have all the proper directories and such
<4> argg
<3> Bleezy: check the gentoo install manual for creating a regular user. A couple of commands in that terminal and you should be all set.
<4> k
<16> i reckon us linux users should sue MS for discrimination: "just because i use linux it means i can't do my GCSE work etc" (all the stuff is in .doc)
<3> Bleezy: something like "useradd -g users -s /bin/bash -m bleezy", but the manual will have all the correct details
<14> brainiac_ghost, euh openoffice?

<17> brainiac_ghost: I love the fact you are doing gcse's.. The age range here just got larger :)
<17> zaggy_nl: openoffice is really not compatible with word
<1> anyone uses psyco with python here?
<1> with portage* I mean sorry
<18> what's GCSE about?
<14> leshaste, well, it comes very close
<14> 'General Certificate of Secondary Education. The first qualification obtained by students, at the age of about 16. There is no age limit..'
<17> zaggy_nl: true.. good if you need read things.. not so good if you have to edit something
<17> zaggy_nl: :)
<17> arbiter_dev: A UK school exam
<14> btw, -something- is eating 15% of my memory, but I have no clue what
<17> zaggy_nl: top, free?
<14> that's the weird part, I used top, ps aux, free, but nothing seems to be using it
<10> zaggy_nl: how do you know something is using the ram then ?
<14> TheRAt, well, I use Conky, and some dockapp, both tell me I'm using 200MB
<14> top however shows me I'm using 90MB mem, and 50MB swap
<10> zaggy_nl: cache ?
<14> wait, 901376kb used, that's 901MB right?
<10> zaggy_nl: yah
<14> that's a LOT of cache
<11> genkernel --all will not give support for IPTABLES?
<10> zaggy_nl: what i am guessing is that 200 megs are being used by the system.. and the remaining 700 as shown in top is cache...
<19> i have a /dev/hdb1 which is ntfs, it has windows2000 on it. i want to make an image/backup of it. what's the best way to do it? i was thinking of something like northen ghost.
<14> TheRAt, ok..
<20> shinobi2: man dd
<10> zaggy_nl: the system generally caches as much as possible.. and frees the ram up when some app needs it..
<14> TheRAt, ahh
<14> btw, with Samba you can write to NTFS right?
<21> duh?
<10> zaggy_nl: not is you mean a local disk on the machine that has an ntfs partition...
<22> zaggy_nl: as long as the disk is in a windows computer, sure
<10> zaggy_nl: not if you mean a local disk on the machine that has an ntfs partition...
<14> well, it's a hdd containing a bunch of ntfs partitions
<22> no then
<14> arf
<22> put it in a windows box
<18> or use captive
<10> zaggy_nl: you will need to compile in support, or build a module for ntfs support...
<14> any other means to safely write? I've got it mounted as read-only
<19> rsk_: this one? http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/dd.1.html so much parameters to setup
<10> zaggy_nl: or as arbiter_dev says, use captive
<14> captive?
<10> zaggy_nl: google it
<18> emulated NTFS write layer from windows
<20> shinobi2: jup
<22> zaggy_nl: dangerous ntfs write driver, format is more reliable ;)
<10> Gentle: lol
<23> hello.two questions:first can somebody tell me if i can install xorg7.0 with ati 9800? and 2cd i use gentoo and while emerging tool xkbdata , is being blocked by xkeyboard-config package , is xkbdata neccessary? sorry for poor english
<24> Hey all. Im trying to set up wireless (ipw2200). its compiled allright and when i run iwconfig eth1 i can see my wireless card and it has good connectivity. So whats the last step im missing before i can use it to access the internet?
<16> zaggy_nl, you are right about the definition of GCSE's
<19> rsk_: will it be a problem restoring it? since it's ntfs.
<16> zaggy_nl, i'm 15 btw
<23> tue: set the essid at your card
<14> Gentle, hmm, I would rather be sure about it
<14> brainiac_ghost, :D
<20> shinobi2: no
<23> tue: then ifconfig eth0 or wlan up
<14> I'll keep it read-only then
<24> merfy: Thanks. googling on essid seems to have found me the guide i was looking for. ill try it. thanks a lot :-)
<23> tue: np
<25> I have tried to get my videocard working for like 24 hours now, tested some 3 different distros, i have ATI Radeon X700 Pro, tried em on 32bit and AMD64 architecture, cant seem to work, i wanna how to get it working? Anyone can help?
<7> hecate355, im trying aswell, if i get em to work, ill tell you
<7> :)
<10> hecate355: do not use an ATI card here, but you might like to take a look at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers and http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_on_amd64
<26> Hi everybody! I am experiencing a weird problem since I did "emerge --sync" and tried to update to KDE 3.5.1: I get a lot of "<programname> does not support the required function provides" when /etc/init.d/net.eth0 starts
<26> and then no networking at all
<26> i checked google and there's nothing on it, so i was thinking maybe it's too recent and perhaps you guys know about it
<18> Kryczek: did you update baselayout and neglect to update your config files?
<27> hi! I just got a fetchmail-update to 6.3... did the handling of self-signed certificates change? it is suddenly picky of this and refuses to fetch mail :-/
<28> I need a libk5crypto.so.3, how can i install that?
<26> arbiter_dev: not that I remember... all i have to do is emerge baselayout and neglect?
<26> (that's gonna be touch without networking heh)
<26> tough*
<18> emerging baselayout and not running etc-update will cause lots of issues
