<3> cyny1: Well, if you have a single head display on a desktop pc they work ok, its when you stick those drivers on a dual head or on a laptop things are less stable. nVidia's 10x better then ATI's completely lame offering.. but they are still unstable compared to the rest of linux's drivers.

<3> tomml, nvidia's drivers offer 3d acceleration. Thats the important difference from an end-user perspective. But nvidia's drivers are just not as stable, and vastly more difficult for the kernel team to debug.

<3> cyny1: you shouldn't either, but I've had display related crashes before. Not often, months go by between them but it does happen, even if it is rarely. Its just... I'm not used to having my linux system crash EVER. A lot of the 'linux isn't as stable as it used to be'-things you hear these days are from binary drivers.

<3> Yeah -- sort of what I'm saying is .. linux is still as stable as its always been but a lot of drivers that arne't in the kernel for a good reason have come into common use. The binary driver crowd in particular ****s because they don't keep up with changes, ie, ati not supporting suspend2.

<12> it could even be taken a step further and a repository of binaries, so if someone else used the same GCC version / CFLAGS / USE flags, you could just grab that binary. Why spend hours recompiling if thousands of others are doing the same thing, resulting in the same binaries? It's true there would be a *lot* if different md5 sums, but there are a *lot* of gentoo users :)
