<0> VelvetSatin: rc-update add xdm default <1> fair point <2> I have htat <2> ponzur <3> Gi <4> VelvetSatin: just run xdm and be done with it <2> I am in XDM <3> Hi <5> Do any AES encryption utilities come on the Gentoo install disc? <2> I did the login <4> VelvetSatin: ...so log in, select xfce for your session <6> NeddySeagoon, thanks,, I'll contact you if it goes totally wrong :p <2> But it still takes em the an ugly *** screen autmatically <5> (I'm trying to figure out what cipher to encode my backup with) <7> Advanced, ok <2> where do I select?
<4> i forget, i haven't used xdm in a long time. should be a dropdown menu of some kind BEFORE you log in <1> hang on there may not be an option for it in xdm <1> xdm is very basic <4> if he installed xfce4 it should be there <4> if not, i don't know what to tell you, that would be very silly as it shows up in the other DM's fine <3> I have a problem with apmd. When i try to start at boot it showme this mensage: "* APM support has not been compiled into the kernel". I compiled kernel with apm built-in. <2> I don't see the "drop down" <1> or velvetstatin: add -gnome to your use flags <1> then emerge gdm <1> gdm is nicer than kdm <2> k <2> That solves it <2> Thank you <2> I forgot about the USE flags <2> Also, what other dependencies could gdm carry besides gnome? <1> gtk? <4> emerge -p gdm will tell you <4> probably lots. <4> i wish there was something in between xdm and kdm/gdm/entrance as far as bloat. <1> so emerge -p is like the whatprovides option on rpm ? <4> not sure <1> ok <5> Do any encryption apps come with any Gentoo install disc? <4> just shows what will be done, it means pretend <1> I think it is <1> nightshadow have a look in the distfiles section on the disc <1> im not sure <5> crudball: without downloading each disc... <1> there is only one disc <4> Advanced: http://fire-eyes.org/temp/gcc-4.1.1.tbz2 , let me know when you have downloaded it <5> (I only have a minimum install right now, which has no distfiles <5> crudball: there are 3 or 4... <1> how about on the cd? <5> yes, I have a Minimum Install CD <1> 3 or 4? I downloaded 1... <5> there are no distfiles on it <1> oh ok <6> Fieldy, yep.. approximately 5 min.. <1> you are running it on a small hdd or just want to keep space and bloatage down? <8> hello all.. i have a strange sound prolblem. I am using alsa with kernel modules for an atii IXP150 sound controller. I ran alsaconf and everything looked fine, modules loaded. I ran alsamixer checked volume levels and made sure nothing was muted. I tried to listen to some music. in xmms. I can see the eq going up and down, and i get no error.. but there is no sound. I tried plugging into every jack on the computer, front and bac <8> k.. still no sound. Does any one have some ideas <1> speakers turned on? <1> I have done that before <9> hi everyone. I can't compile mesa-progs-6.5. when doing the ld part of glxinfo it says _nv000027gl@@LIBGL: TLS definition in /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6/../../../libGL.so section .tbss mismatches non-TLS reference in //usr//lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGLcore.so.1 //usr//lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGLcore.so.1: could not read symbols: Bad value --- any ideas? <8> they are headphones <1> oh ok <1> is there a volume setting in xmms? <8> yes.. it is the same as pcm volume in alsamixer/kmix <8> it is pegged <1> I use mplayer so I dont know much about xmms <1> ok <10> xmms is ok ..it can't do aac though <5> crudball: I just wanted a quick download :P <10> vlc and mplayer and xine are the best <1> ok <10> and now with the new xine-libs it does wmv better than any other media player in linux <5> crudball: but I'm looking into encryption/decryption apps that I can use to encrypt my backup with, and that I'll be ablt to decrypt later with a boot disc <10> no more slowdown or freezing <1> tbright have you run /etc/init.d/alsasound start ? <11> okay. I've copied all my files using rsync -aH to my new hard drive and installed grub and it boots and seems to work great. but, wine doesn't work - it just sits there and hangs with no output at all - and remerging it doesn't do any good. some files might've been lost because I have to fsck.reiserfs --rebuild-tree last night (overheat?) and some permissions might've gotten messed up but that's all I can think of <8> crudball: yep..
<1> t35t0r too right - mplayer owns <1> ok <8> and i added alsasound to boot with rc-update <1> yeah <12> howdy all. i accidentally shut down my computer in the middle of a boot, and i get "Error Loading Operating System" when trying to boot now. my instinct is that grub needs to be reinstalled: is this valid? <13> Tman, try deleting your wine config in $HOME <1> I juse added it to my local <1> I think <1> not sure <1> oh well it works anyway <11> AntiLiberal: just the config file or...? <13> Tman, maybe it somehow cot compiled with CFLAGS that don't work with your new computer <14> does fedora have a feature like emerge, im banned from the channel for some reason, i never even been to it <13> Tman, test it in a different user account <11> AntiLiberal: same computer; different hard drive <8> mrclark:.. uh possibly.. or maybe you just need to copy the kernel image over to the boot partition again .. use the live cd to try it out <6> Fieldy, done.. thanks a lot.. <12> tbright, kay. i fsck'd everything and it's all "clean". <12> tbright, or at least fsck thinks so. <15> whenever i use a program that uses video card acceleration i get these weird blue streaks on the screen <8> mrclark: yeah .. maybe the kernel image went wonky.. i dont know why it would.. but i bet that would fix it.. .. do you get a boot loader promt or not? <15> and if i leave it running itll quickly freeze everything <13> wine doesn't work at all for me here - it gets some kind of X11 error (X_CreateWindow) <10> ropoctl_, what video card, what kernel, what driver version, what xorg, are you setting your refresh rates or allowing X / EDID to do it, is your monitor broken? <2> okay... <5> Can I get a list of software on the Gentoo 2006.0 LiveCD? <10> NightShadow, what do you need just ask <2> What> <5> t35t0r: if it has ccrypt installed <16> hey all, how do I keep Xorg from installing on my mail server. I am trying to do an emerge -up world and even with USE="-X -kde -qt -alsa -arts -doc" emerge -up world it still wants to install Xorg. <5> or at least the source code <13> Does anyone know where there is a fast, free virtulizer for PowerPC called mol but vmware is slower and not free for PC ? <10> NightShadow, ccrypt or crypt? <13> actually I can't be sure it's slower <5> ccrypt <10> NightShadow, never heard of that <17> Hi I am trying to make a media dir on my server (/opt/media) and was wondering what chown/chmod commands I should use on it to give all local and nfs uses rw. Any idea <13> where = why <5> ccrypt uses AES to encrypt/decrypt files, its in portage <10> NightShadow, no it's not on the livecd I bet <11> AntiLiberal: it doesn't seem to work at all. even 'winecfg' hangs <5> darn <13> far0k, put it in /var/media or /home/media <5> t35t0r: Know of any strong encryption apps that are? <10> NightShadow, perhaps shasum <13> Tman, my wine doesn't work at all either - fatal error connection to X server <12> tbright, no, grub doesn't seem to initialize, or perhaps the "error loading OS" error is one of grubs errors. <5> t35t0r: SHA is a hash though...which isn't used for encryption <5> it's used for authentication <8> mrclark: in that case you might need to redo grub. boot with the install cd. mount your partitions, chroot into the env, then go from there <10> NightShadow, sorry right <11> AntiLiberal: at least you get an error at all <10> NightShadow, so ccrypt doesn't create a hash ? <5> nope <5> ccrypt completely encodes the file using AES and a keyphrase you provide <10> oh you said encrupt decrypt files <10> duh <7> mrclark, Thats 5 : Partition table invalid or corrupt. Its a bad sign <10> didn't read your original message closely <8> so no guesses on this sound .. or lack of sound problem,? <5> ah <5> AES or RSA would be preferable <10> NightShadow, right so it's just a quick version of pgp <13> NeddySeagoon, sime for disk recovery utilities <5> t35t0r: basically <10> NightShadow, without having to fool around with keys and stuff <18> NeddySeagoon: hey <5> I might just compile ccrypt and throw it on my usb stick <5> yea <7> AntiLiberal, You get that from BIOS raid - its normal <10> NightShadow, good idea <18> NeddySeagoon: i got my gentoo computer working <10> NightShadow, quickpkg it
