<0> DrSlony: see above :) <0> DrSlony: if it's not installed yet: probably "emerge -vp ati-drivers" <1> marienz: how far aboe? :] <0> DrSlony: (and it's a good idea to do emerge -vp or -va before actually merging anything) <2> maybe anybody can help me with this iptables/firestarter problem : http://pastebin.com/704331 <0> DrSlony: equery l <3> ok, so i gather that if xorg can't find an xorg.conf file it will make the config up when it runs - is there any way to copy this config to a file to use as a base for tweaking? <4> naxxtor: try X -configure or xorgconfig <5> naxxtor: X -configure <0> naxxtor: try X -configure, iirc <0> gaaah, beaten twice :( <3> heh, cheers <4> \o/ <6> the real problem heeven with all those masks it still complains <1> marienz: strange thing is that when I did emerge -p xorg-x11, I had no problems (after masking the 3 newest ati drivers), but when I do emerge -vp ati-drivers now, all of them seem to be masked <2> anybody http://pastebin.com/704331 ?
<6> like i said how do i force it <6> were back here <4> winkey: what is the blocking message now? <6> same <1> if they were all masked then, then emerge -p xorg-x11 would complain <0> DrSlony: I don't understand that either. Sounds like something changed between you running those two commands. <1> Seems so, but nothing changed <4> so xorg 7.1 is blocking xorg 7.0 ? <7> winkey: it's a problem with portage downgrading. See, portage handles dependencies well, but it doesn't handle reverse deps well. So you basically need to clean out all the deps that belong to the defunct 7.1 before it'll let you emerge 7.0. <1> except for the meat I took out of the freezer which defrosted,. <3> uhh, how do I kill X if I've got gdm running :/ <7> naxxtor: /etc/init.d/xdm stop ? <5> naxxtor: /etc/init.d/xdm stop <6> kojiro i do not want to --unmerge i am using the systemn atm <8> nope. it still stops on the same thing when I turn on nostrip <3> heh, cheers, was trying to do gdm stop <6> i just want it rebuilt <1> kojiro: what would be the quickest way for him to clean them out? <4> winkey: its in memory, it should be ok, unless you restart X or something <7> DrSlony: 'quickest' probably won't solve his problem of him using the system atm <5> naxxtor: gdm, wdm, kdm, xdm, it's all the same thing. (: <6> triplah NO <7> sigh <4> Skunky: wdm? <1> kojiro: I was thinking more about my immediate future when I asked that, because I suspect I will have to downgrade too :] <9> kojiro: is there any work to make portage handle reverse-deps in a better manner? <1> will adding AllenJB's masks solve the problem>? <7> winkey: if you'd pastebin the output of emerge -uDNavt world maybe I could help you figure out a smooth downgrade path. <7> Kyuu: yes <10> Xorg log http://paste.lisp.org/display/21154 , xdm http://paste.lisp.org/display/21155 <9> kojiro: hows it going? <5> triplah: yes. and entrance, always forget entrance <7> Kyuu: no idea ;-) <10> [for marienz] <9> kojiro: heh... drat <7> Kyuu: ask in #gentoo-portage :-) <4> Skunky: yeah i've used entrance. what is wdm? <9> mmm <11> DrSlony: My masks file is a guide - yours will differ depending upon what drivers you're using, but yes. <7> Kyuu: yes, you should :-P <0> Kyuu: portage is not the cleanest code in the world <4> python rolls off the tongue :) <7> Kyuu: then submit patches and stand firm when they are taunted by lesser devs :-D <0> azureal: which *dm is xdm starting? gdm? kdm? <6> screw it i will just feed it fuill path and file <1> AllenJB: ok <12> How do i put an folder to another machine via sftp? :/ put [folder] doesnt work <9> kojiro: ive heard a few things which should be addressed... like proper slotted updates and possibly gcc version on a per package basis <9> kojiro: hehe.. lesser devs :p <0> ErZo: try scp instead, perhaps? <13> So, how do I force Gentoo *not* to attempt to downgrade a package when downgrading it will crash X on startup (I know, I've tried it) - I've tried emerge -U, I've tried removing the -* in the ebuild after the sync... <7> Kyuu: define "proper slotted updates" <14> so, anyone know why portage would want to downgrade a ~arch masked package that is in /etc/portage/package.keywords? <1> What does "mv -i" mean in etc-update? <5> triplah: I told you. they're all the same. <10> marienz: gnome <12> marienz: I can't handle scp, i screw up then ;P <15> ErZo: use rsync. <12> sftp :( <0> azureal: can you pastebin ~/.xsession-errors?
<4> Skunky: no, i mean what is the software.... not what it does :P <8> DrSlony, interactive <13> it is getting really annoying to have to watch out for that package to avoid gentoo killing my machine. <5> Garibaldi: didn't put the correct atom in package.keywords? <4> dont make me google! <16> DrSlony: move interactive, it'll ask you before overwritting anything <13> or at least the package maintainers <15> as far as I can tell, sftp doesn't support recursive puts... <5> triplah: it's wdm! <12> so, your telling me i can't put a folder via sftp? :/ <8> DrSlony, it will ask before doing the move <12> oh.. <4> ok, google here i come <4> ;) <14> Skunky: it was correct enough to emerge it to begin wiht <8> DrSlony, man mv <11> *waits for winkey to come back complaining about how broken his system is after he forced packages from different versions of xorg to install with each other <17> yay. <14> Skunky: I didn't change it since then <4> AllenJB: hooray for closure :) <5> Garibaldi: no idea then. (: <10> marienz: i don't have any .xsession-errors <9> kojiro: for instance.. say you have stable and unstable versions of gcc.. when you update your system.. or even gcc, it only updates the unstable version and not the stable. Thus the stable version eventually gets masked off because its never updated <0> nemo_home: downgrade what from what to what (or even better: pastebin command + output) <1> ok than kyou <9> kojiro: makes a big mess <14> I'm starting to think this new portage isn't quite stable <0> azureal: hmm, odd. what "session" is gdm running? <13> marienz: oh, doesn't require a pastebin for one line. one moment <10> marienz: how do i tell? <11> triplah: Not really closure, considering he's gonig to be back here complaining about the system he broke by ignoring us - and I bet you he'll try to pin the blame on us to boot <5> how do I turn off the scroll lock key?! grrr. <14> or has new semantics that I don't know about <0> azureal: I suspect the root of the problem is hidden in one of the scripts gdm runs when it initializes your session. <7> Kyuu: oic <10> marienz: it's strange because it worked before... <4> AllenJB: with any luck, i'll be in bed by then <10> marienz: at least gaim did, not sure about writer =P <1> I dont know which option to choose in etc-update after emerging xorg-x11 after a gentoo installation off the LiveCD. Is it safe for me to use -3 - auto merge all remaining fiels? <18> fsegfe <7> Lulith: eh? <18> im sorry <9> kojiro: i recently noticed this on my desktop system.. i think there should be a way to deal with it. <18> i just register <18> mi nickname <18> and i was teasting <7> Lulith: easy on the enter key, please :-) <10> teasting? is that more fun that toasting? <13> marienz: ok, a little more than a moment since I did -auvD *sigh* <19> where would I check to see why dhcp didn't start/won't start?? <18> omg men, i just came and u are like do this and do that <7> Kyuu: if you emerge ~arch gcc and don't leave it keyworded... which would you want to upgrade? <18> know what <18> **** you :) <18> ds <18> d <20> how do I query what packages would depend on a certain package? <4> Johnny23|work: /var/log/message <18> d <14> hehe <4> Johnny23|work: /var/log/messages <18> d <17> Lulith: watch the language and floods please <17> geez <21> can someone help me with upgrading glibc to 2.4 <3> hmm, forgive my ignorance, can you apply package masks other than package.mask? <22> anyone here have a pioneer dvr-111(D) <9> kojiro: if i dont leave it keyworded, it gets unmerged on an update and depclean. am i not correct? <3> because emerge seems to think I've specified <=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.9 <0> Kyuu: depclean and slots are a pretty unhappy combo <21> i just switched my system to the ~x86 branch and am upgrading gcc and glibc
