<4> nighty: ok, so 5.7G used? you should be able to boot a livecd on amachine with both hard drives connected to it, partition the notebook drive, mkfs on it, mount it, mount the source machine's drive, and either rsync or cp -a the contents from the source drive to the notebook drive, then chroot to the notebook drive and install your bootloader, put the notebook drive back in the notebook and boot it.
