<0> im on an intelbox
<1> x86 Minimal will work on any "normal" intel system
<2> Erealz, What CPU ? x86 is for any intel CPU, i686 is Pentium Pro and later
<0> is their i686 live cd?
<1> There is not.
<0> umm
<0> pentium 4
<2> Erealz, there used to be ...
<1> NeddySeagoon is thinking of chost stuff :)
<0> hmmm
<0> so 86 should still work for me no?
<1> Erealz: Just for the hell of it, what was the exact filename you downloaded?
<2> Stonefish, nope - I got that wrong, there was a i686 set of stages
<0> x86 gentoo livecd.iso
<3> ya the graphical installes is i686 afaik
<3> installer*

<2> Erealz, did its md5sum check out after you burned it ?
<4> if i modify /etc/group will the changes take effect immidiately?
<0> i dont know what that is md5sum?
<4> Erealz: ask google
<2> stephelton, you need to log out and back in
<4> NeddySeagoon: hmmm ok thanks
<0> nero burnd it succesfully
<3> stephelton: group membership changes are applied on login
<0> so i dont know what the F$^^
<3> Erealz: relax
<1> Erealz: Nero can only burn what it's given. If you give it a bad file, it won't know.
<2> Erealz, You could have got a dud download. md5check the burned CD
<5> ****
<4> in order to create a directory i just need write permissions, right?
<6> yes stephelton
<2> yes
<0> neddy how would go about checking this md5chck
<4> GOD
<1> x86 gentoo livecd.iso isn't the name of any official Gentoo release I'm familiar with
<2> Erealz, you need the md5sum value, which is on the web and a program to compute it. In linux, its md5sum, there must be a win version too
<0> i did start up mirc durring the burning mayb coused an error , could happen right?
<1> Erealz: This isn't 1997. CD Burning doesn't require total control of the PC anymore :)
<2> Erealz, if you made a buffer underrun and you don't have burn proof, its possible
<1> starting mirc wouldn't do a thing in itself
<0> mayb not but
<7> I made an gentoo install without network, and now i have plugged my computer to an normal ethernet cable, how do i set that up? all links i find on google talk about setting up the network under install...
<0> i notice running aps durring burning isnt a good idea i loft tone of cd like that.
<3> jke: /etc/init.d/net.eth0 status
<0> lost*
<4> is there a way i can su to user apache to try something? it asks me for a p***owrd which i dont believe exists
<1> Erealz: How old is your burner?
<8> emerge mplayer-bin tells me it's masked by ~amd64 keyword, but I have =media-video/mplayer-bin-1.0_pre7-r3 ~x86 in my package.keywords file..
<0> it not that old top of the line from sony
<2> jke, if you use dhcp and you emerged dhcpd try /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start it may JustWork
<0> about 1 year
<7> brianw: *status: stopped
<3> jke: start it
<7> oh, no loaded modules provide dchp
<8> err ~amd64 in the keywords file I mean. technically I tried both
<3> jke: did you emerge dhcpcd ?
<9> hey guys
<2> Erealz, do you have another Linux install ?
<0> no i was hopeing to make gentoo my IT distro
<1> Erealz: Are you absolutely certain that the file you downloaded was exactly "x86 gentoo livecd.iso"
<2> Erealz, Just a sec ...
<9> i got a problem, im installing gentoo on another pc, and when i try emerging fluxbox the jpeg-6b-r5 wont compile
<0> i do run live distro from cd to get some work done
<7> nope... and cant do it becuase i have no net :s
<3> jke: set your net manually
<0> get gentoo
<9> i have to specify a tag, what is that?
<0> x86 live cd
<4> i have svnusers:x:442:apache,stehpen,luke in /etc/group so as user stephen, i should have write permissions to anything owned by group svnusers if g+w exists, right? am i missing something?
<0> the only live cd their
<2> Erealz, you can get md5sum for windows here http://www.etree.org/md5com.html
<3> jke: what LAN Network are you using? 192.168.1.0/24 ?
<1> Erealz: A yes or no would cover it. I ask, because that filename isn't offered on the Gentoo website, which makes me wonder where you got it.
<2> Erealz, you get the md5sum file for the *.iso, from the same plase as you got the .iso
<7> brainw: my laptops ip is 192.168.2.185
<7> but i do use dhcp
<3> jke: ok, and your router's ip?

<2> Erealz, the web page tells how to use the program too
<7> brianw: aww, wait... my laptop is on a different router than the gentoo machine :(
<0> sweet
<0> thnx for the help
<4> i have svnusers:x:442:apache,stehpen,luke in /etc/group so as user stephen, i should have write permissions to anything owned by group svnusers if g+w exists, right? am i missing something?
<2> Erealz, if the md5sum fails, on the CD, throw it away and check the downloaded *.iso. Thow that away if it fails too
<7> can i emerge dchpcd from the livecd or something like that?
<3> Erealz: well your Lan is probably 192.168.1.0/24 I bet
<2> stephelton, type groups and check your membership
<3> jke: You don't know your network setup?
<4> NeddySeagoon: svnusers isn't listed...!
<2> stephelton, log out and back in
<4> NeddySeagoon: still not working
<4> # gp***wd -a stephen svnusers
<4> NeddySeagoon: does "exit" and then "ctl a c" count as relogging in in screen? probably not hmmm
<4> bingo
<2> stephelton, probably not. You need to reread /etc/group
<7> brianw: unfortunely, its not mine network but my parents, that have an IT-"proffesional" to manage it
<4> NeddySeagoon: it worked it worked!!! thanks!!
<2> stephelton, np
<3> jke: ok, try this file in your /etc/conf.d/net
<4> stephen > subversion mua hah
<10> I'm trying to install Gentoo 2006.0 from the minimal CD in VMware
<3> jke: http://rafb.net/paste/results/ere5dX92.html
<10> i typed "fdisk /dev/sda"
<3> then, echo nameserver 4.2.2.1 > /etc/resolv.conf
<7> iface_et(0-4)="dhcp"
<3> jke: ^^
<10> and it sayd "Unable to open /dev/sda"
<11> trying to get lm_sensors to work, ive compiled the right kernel options (core, config, and my nforce4 driver) and emerged lm_sensors np, the daemon loads without errors but "sensors" says is can't access procfs/sysfs
<3> jke: comment out everything except what I gave you.
<9> maybe you need /dev/sda1
<7> ok
<11> ive run sensors-detect and got a few sensors btw
<3> jke: run the echo command yet?
<10> sylvanthis, it gives me the same error
<2> dorkiaa`, do fdisk -l to see what drives you have
<7> okay, the most silly question of the day: how do you make an _ with US keyboard layout :)
<3> jke: shift + -
<12> brianw: how do you make an _ with US
<12> keyboard layout :) (sorry s/_/-/)
<10> NeddySeagoon, it's wierd, i only have /dev/hda :\
<11> what's the ebuild for the lib that lm_sensors uses ?
<7> brainw: i need a physically description of where the - key is on the US keymap... on a danish keyboard layout it is left to the shift :)
<2> dorkiaa`, what were you expecting ... and why ?
<10> but when i tried to install Gentoo from the livecd, I did have /dev/sda
<12> jke: its one of the key next to backspace -1 or 2 to the left
<13> I am nOOb so please be patient, is it possible to install apps to pacific locations like /usr/local or say /opt?
<10> NeddySeagoon, I know I jave a SATA disk
<2> dorkiaa`, do you have SATA ?
<10> yes
<14> I modprobe sbp2, I check in lsmod, it is there, but if I modinfo sbp2, it answers nothing, what should I do ?
<10> * jave = have
<15> hi
<2> dorkiaa`, did you make the old IDE driver for SATA in your kernel ?
<15> how can I see what hardware I have in my box, lspci do not show everything
<15> ?
<16> Ohh, my gosh, I am in trouble. I am running a conrad install (which went great) and I just finished an emerge -uDv world. It emerged the new glibc 2.4.0 and now my system can not compile (really link) anything. I am running the gcc 4.1 and I am not shure what to do now to repair my system. I have done some basic checking in the forums but did not see a whole lot of information about broken glibc 2.4.0.
<17> r10, using some sw?
<9> maybe you need to emerge pciutils first
<9> or do you have that?
<16> the following is the error that I get when I try to compile a "hello world" type program
<7> okay... i have edited the file and saved it
<10> NeddySeagoon, i didn't got to the kernel configuration, i'm still trying to partition my disk
<15> path_: I have booted my system up on a liveCD
<16> ... /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.0.2/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld:/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.0.2/../../../libc.so: file format not recognized; treating as linker script
<2> dorkiaa`, from the liveCD ?
<17> r10, what do you need to know ?
<16> I looked at the /usr/lib/libc.so file and it is a linkere script?
<10> NeddySeagoon, no, from the minimal CD
<2> dorkiaa`, - ok
<15> path_: what SATA controlle I have in my box
<17> complicated
<13> _prophecy; try #conrad or #evo-mission
