<0> anchorman, your /etc/fstab is wrong
<1> i use the same fstab in my kernel and the genkernel don't i?
<2> Ander|son: if you have a specific problem, ask a specific question
<0> roger55, thats cheap
<3> I've just downloaded the minimal gentoo cd, burnt it to CD and booted up the comp with it, I'm now logged in as root and able to get on to the internet from the comp, what do I do next?
<1> , /etc/fstab
<4> roger55: I wish, we'd all be rich
<5> Ander|son, handbook
<6> Ander|son, you get out the handbook and read.
<7> anchorman, Is grub finding your kernel?
<3> :-\
<8> iamben: i love you man :-D gpart did the trick
<1> yea
<9> how to see the size of files emerge will download?
<9> please
<1> its in the list and when i hit enter it starts to boot

<1> just stops in the middle
<9> i mean total of 13 ebuilds
<1> the kernel loads
<9> please
<6> Ander|son, links -g http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=4
<10> dracony: emerge -va whatyourarego9ing to install
<6> Ander|son, or without the -g
<7> anchorman, Last time I saw that happen was when I forgot to set the CPU arch in menuconfig
<6> Ander|son, in short: partitioning the harddisk, making filesystems, mounting,
<1> ok
<1> i'll check
<11> tommyangelo: good to hear, i guess ill keep recommending it when the issue comes up =)
<12> anyone know where the /.x11vncrc is?
<9> i love perl
<13> paq: bfr doesn't really work too well :(
<1> can you use menuconfig
<13> any other options?
<1> in your inslation or olny from the instlation cd
<14> hello room
<15> hello guys
<1> grout> find / -name /.x11vncrc
<15> I have a really weird problem
<15> I cannot startX!
<1> z10> you check the logs?
<7> anchorman, Doesn't livecd support /proc/config.gz ? If so perhaps your could do 'less /proc/config.gz' and compare your config with the one from livecd
<15> The screens are like blocked
<3> roger55, thanks, so I need to partition the hard drive first?
<15> what can I do
<1> i know this sounds dumb, but what is /proc/config.gz
<15> :(
<11> Z10N0101: check /var/log/Xorg.0.log
<16> anchorman: it contains your .config that you used to compileyour kernel
<16> anchorman: very useful at times
<1> thanks
<6> Ander|son, isn't that what I just said?
<15> iamben, and then ?
<6> Ander|son, anyway, read the handbook and you'll be fine.
<14> actually it is the config of the running kernel
<5> anyone......how can i find out what framebuffer (vga=, etc.) settings the bootcd is p***ing to the kernel?
<3> no need to be like that roger55...
<11> Z10N0101: read it? it should give more details than the xorg error you saw
<14> heh
<15> I cannot see any problem, When I try to open an X server it says fatal IO error
<14> ya come on roger55 , just install it for him :)
<1> why is nano -w built in by defult and not vi
<17> anchorman, some people hate vi
<18> by default in what
<8> iamben: it didnt find everything, but it found enough to reconstruct a working partition table. All I needed.
<19> do zcat /proc/config.gz
<19> not less
<20> should i add windows partitions to "fstab"?
<14> because nano is much smaller than vi I would ***ume
<4> anchorman: nano is system default because it's lightweight
<6> brianw ;)
<14> zless works too, and zgrep
<21> hmmmm, I emerged wine, but I cant find it on the kde taskbar... warum?
<6> Leth, you mean menu?
<21> roger55: menu
<5> denn wine ist shlecht
<20> should i add windows partitions to "fstab"?
<6> Leth wine alone doesn't do anything

<18> i dunno wha the said but it waasn't nice
<21> roger55: the emerge should
<6> Leth, you run wine some.exe
<11> MrSmiley: if you want it mounted by default, sure
<1> Munger> what am i lookinf for in this file?
<6> Leth, do what?
<14> heh
<22> can anyone tell me what this means? : - dev-db/mysql-5.0.19-r1 (masked by: ) <- I've been trying to find out what's masking that, unsucessfully
<20> iamben: and what should i write in the second column (where you write /boot)?
<21> roger55: Ah, yes.. I just hoped I'd get a set of winecfg and other files... but neverming
<21> mind even
<6> Leth, just run winecfg
<22> ahh it always takes me asking to find the answer, got it.
<11> MrSmiley: someting like /mnt/windows, you'll need to mkdir /mnt/windows though
<1> munger, are you still here
<20> so something like this: /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs defualt 0 0
<15> [A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A[A
<18> you handle him i'm eating
<14> ...
<20> iamben, so something like this: /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs defualt 0 0
<21> John Petrucci ftw
<6> someone's seeping on keyboard
<14> MrSmiley: for ntfs, you will need umask options as well
<6> and there is the L i missed!
<11> MrSmiley: yeah but if you want all users to be abel to read it you'll want umask=0222 in the options column instead of default
<23> trying to install gentoo via LiveCD on ViAO X505- heard through the grapevine it has no firewire optical support- is this true? ifso anyway i can boot- without network install
<7> anchorman, Sorry. I had to move my truck. config.gz is a file created by the kernel at boot time if the feature was enabled in menuconfig. It basically shows you what configuration options were used to build the running kernel. I think livecd does it. If so, you can look at what settings were used in the livecd kernel and compare them with your's
<14> noFUTURE: can it boot via usb? if so, just use a pen drive
<20> iamben, so something like this: /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs unmask 0 0 , and create /mnt/windows, ok got it tnx!
<14> MrSmiley: no
<20> why not?
<6> noFUTURE, not sure, you can try with 'gentoo-nofb scandelay doscsi dofirewire'
<11> MrSmiley: umask=0222 where you have unmask
<24> argh! I just tried out Sun JDK 1.5 for a bit, now that i've switched back to 1.4.2, i keep getting this error "org/xml/sax/ext/Attributes2 (Unsupported major.minor version 49.0)" I think this means something was compiled with jdk 1.5, but I can't figure out what it is
<14> MrSmiley: man mount, look up the umask option
<7> anchorman, You can compare it with your /usr/src/linux/.config
<14> tss tss
<1> is there a way to save this to a file
<18> this what
<14> anchorman: zcat /proc/config.gz >> ~/FILE
<20> this: /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs unmask=0222 0 0
<1> thanks
<14> er > not >>
<18> probably /etc/fstab
<23> willdo- brb
<7> anchorman, Just boot livecd and copy /proc/config.gz somewhere
<21> Roger55: If I just copy over the entire directory from a windows install. Lets say a game... then it will run the exe from within that directory?
<7> brb. Food
<11> MrSmiley: umask, as in you mask
<11> not unmask
<6> Leth, no idea.
<1> how can i see the /proc/config.gz of a kernel i can't boot
<8> i have a serious problem: a setup that appears to be writing to disk until it fills up the / partition
<11> Leth: generally, yes
<6> Z10N0101, don't do that again.
<14> see, better to show him where to look up the info... spoonfed #gentoo these days :)
<15> sorry
<20> this: /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs umask=0222 0 0
<15> The problem is that I'm chatting by tty
<6> Z10N0101, so am I
<11> mngrif: i was doing phonetics not exact acronym mapping =)
<7> anchorman, No. Compare /proc/config.gz when you boot livecd to your /usr/src/linux/.config
<15> That is why I'm asking why If I exec kdm nothing happens
<15> sorry roger
<8> i emptied all the /tmp /var/tmp etc directories, but it just filed the disk up again
<6> mzbot, gentoo kde config
<25> roger55: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml
<26> Z10N0101, kdm is meant to be run by init, what you want is 'exec startkde' in your .xinitrc
<15> roger55, can you help me please ?
<6> Z10N0101, did you read that guide mzbot posted?
<15> noop
