<0> How can i get one of my mouse buttons to close windows in Xorg/Gnome ? <1> Bung: why in the hell would you want that? <1> Bung: fat32 ****s <2> Diablosnuevos, or do u have a d: e: .. <3> take a guess <3> can it be done? <4> LSD`: I'm guessing Bung wants to dual boot. <5> no <1> DAudioLink: so? <6> you can dual boot without using fat32 <5> it's not partitioned. only main partition which is C:\ with win xp on it <3> its not dualbooting thats the problem, its space <7> nanobanshee: so if boot crashes or happens to get corrupted i can always mount /home and backup <8> Diablosnuevos: you got a decent amount of free space? <1> the kernel is expendable, you don't need to protect it <5> yep
<4> Bung: What? <7> mount / i meant <5> 40GB <2> Diablosnuevos, then it's partiioned if it's a drive letter <9> beezee: other way around. if /home crashes, you can still boot to fix it. <10> Gues i dont understand this, iv installed gentoo i have a seprate /boot part the boot flag is on and when i boot my system my machine just boots windows <5> but not anything else I meant <10> windows is on hda1 boot is hda2 <2> Diablosnuevos, thats what i was asking :) <5> sorry <2> np <3> DAudioLink: im trying to move it to a partition with more space, without having to back up and resize all my patitions <5> so can I use the Gentoo installation to create all the necessary partitions? what happens if the installation fails? can I still access win xp? <4> k31th: Switch the boot drive from C: to hd2 or something like that in the bios <2> Diablosnuevos, then you'll be fine <8> Diablosnuevos: if you have partition magic and are comfortable with using it, i'd use that <11> sorry to repeat the question, but does anybody know if the gentoo installer comes with ndiswrapper? <9> LSD`: I don't have separate /boot either, but some people like to. <5> but I don't know exactly what size and type of partitions I need, so it's useless for me to use partition magic <6> Bung, why don't you just make a tar up your home directory...then make any changes then restore the tar file? <1> nanobanshee: mainly because they lack the ability to think for themselves <9> LSD`: that's harsh but true. <2> Diablosnuevos, does partion magic support jfs/ext3/reiserFS4 <3> geezy: i need to do that everytime i compile something big? no thanks <5> I know it supports linux <1> richiefrich: it understands ext2/3, not sure about the other 2, probably not <6> Bung, i would recommend resizing or something else <5> I mean partitioning for linux <8> Diablosnuevos: if you've used it before, and know how to resize your windows partition with it, I would do that. resize the windows partition to make some space, 10gb+ if you can, and then boot into the gentoo disk to create the linux partitions in that space <5> ok <5> I've used partition magic and have no problem with it <12> LSD`: Personally I keep /boot separate because it makes things easier for someone who has to boot into multiple gentoo installs. <9> Bung: i think it is fine. the only concern is filenames: unix supports long filenames with funny characters. <3> nanobanshee: i see <2> Diablosnuevos, u can make three partitions then as ext3 if u can make a linux swap thats also needed <3> thanks, ill think about it then <5> so is it easy to install gentoo? I just put the cd follow the screen and that's it <1> nerd_: at one point I had 4 seperate distros of linux installed and booting yet didn't need to have /boot seperate <0> How can i get one of my mouse buttons to close windows in Xorg/Gnome ? <12> LSD`: Hmm...So there is no advantage? <5> but what sizes? when I installed a linux red hat it told me what it needed <9> Bung: if you keep really long filenames with funny characters out of /home, go ahead. <2> Diablosnuevos, if u have questions look in the handbook or ask in here <8> Diablosnuevos the handbook says <12> LSD`: I mean, part of the reason I do this is that I always use reiserfs partitons, and they don't play nicely with each other. <5> ok <8> ok guys, I've got another fatal error here <8> on my install that refuses to work on this machine <2> Diablosnuevos, thats up to u, i make 5 partions + a swap <6> nerd_, thats another reason why i do it also <5> so when I have those partitions Gentoo will detect them and I'll be able to install it no problem? <8> I'll pastebin <12> geezy: Ah. So I am not alone. <5> do they have to be that type 2 or 3? <12> geezy: Say, do you know anything about HAL or D-BUS? I have a problem I am unable to solve. <6> nerd_, no your not..i for one will never have a linux install without a /boot partition <2> Diablosnuevos, no they can be xfs/jfs/reiserFS3/4 <6> nerd_, what kind of problem....i don't really know 2 much about those <13> extra boot partition here too :) <2> Diablosnuevos, or ext2/3 <5> ok. so I need a boot partition, a temp partition and some other ones
<14> Diablosnuevos: seriously, go read the handbook...you haven't asked a single question that isn't answered by the handbook. <1> nerd_: there hasn't vbeen an advantage to using a /boot partition in nearly 10 years <15> indeed <12> geezy: It does tend to keep things neat, and it allows great flexibility when it comes to moving and resizing partitions (providing /boot is the first partition). <12> geezy: Ok. My problem is this: <5> ok <12> geezy: I recently upgraded hal, d-bus and several major kde components. <2> Diablosnuevos, my suggestion is a boot/home/usr/ROOT/swap <6> LSD`, i even use /boot when i create initrd images for embedded devices <2> Diablosnuevos, imho <13> i had some little accident 3 years ago since then... i always have an extra boot part... UNmounted <14> LSD`: please don't spread FUD, there are excellent reasons for using a separate /boot, and if you don't like to that's fine, but don't tell people there's no reason to, just let them do what they like. <1> the sooner the concept of a /boot partition dies, the better <12> geezy: I now get the error: "Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: can't find /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab <15> what a load. <12> geezy: I find this strange seeing as I've installed pmount <6> nerd_, what are you trying to mount? <15> i always have a /boot partition and leave it unmounted. nothing like a power failure with /boot mounted or part of / <15> but yeah, personal choice. <16> any GNU Make gurus here? i've got a problem that i've been trying to solve for a couple of days now <2> Fieldy, i guess u must be in that channel for awile, i got voice eventually.. :) <12> LSD`: I tend to move and resize partitoins on occasion, and not having my /boot tied to a partition I plan to delete can be helpful. <12> geezy: I am trying to mount a USB stick. <8> http://pastebin.com/647155 - could not execture pkg_setup <17> this is fun <9> tlhiv: go ahead. ask. <6> nerd_, can you paste the contents of your /etc/fstab at http://pastebin.com and then give me the url? <0> how can i play movies inside firefox (bin 32bit) <12> geezy: I did have to recompile kdebase-kioslaves to get kdemediamanager running again, if that helps. I don't see how that is connected <6> nerd_, pastebin.ca oops <2> nerd_, is it partitioned alreay... and if so it'd be a /dev/sd1/2/3 <17> my eyes hurt though.. I am tired.. no fun <12> geezy: Well, Sure. But for obvious reasons /etc/fstab won't contain /dev/sda1 because I don't use fstab-sync <1> nerd_: so, you're content with having to rebuild the rest of / but not the few megs of stuff in /boot? yeah, that makes sense <18> damn, i realy dont see any options in my bios for "scsi" anything <6> nerd_, sounds to me like your fstab file changed somehow....did you do an etc-update lately? <19> suppie everyone? <12> richiefrich: Yeah. It's partitoined. All it has on it is one vfat partition though...why? <20> I'm having a problem with package dependencies. Specifically, I can't compile mozilla-firefox because it depends on x11-libs/cairo. Cairo does not compile cleanly as it fails when looking for libX11.la (even though the package does NOT depend on libX11). libX11 is part of and depends on modular x (xorg 7.x) I upgraded to modular X last week, but removed it and went back to 6.8 due to its low opengl performance on my system. Now, I can't seem to <20> get to a consistent state either with xorg 6.8 or 7 (I can no longer re-upgrade to modular X as cairo will still not compile even after libX11 is unmasked). Any helpful thoughts? <19> how are ya all tonight <19> could i get some possibly quick help <15> sean: heh shorten that, it's so long most folks won't bother to read it <14> vaijr2002: don't ask to ask <12> geezy: I use dispatch-conf, and yes I used it recently. I didn't see /etc/fstab among the 40 some files I edited though. <2> nerd_, u said u were trying to mount it, no <19> i am trying to mount this..W95 Ext'd (LBA) thats what shows in fdisk -l <9> chi: or ide. whatever you have. <12> richiefrich: Yes. <2> nerd_, and u cant <18> nanobanshee, i have 2 scsi's <2> ? <19> well Blackace trying to not be rude and just blwert out stuff <20> umm... mozilla won't compile. Xorg and cairo screwed. Help. Scroll up for details ;) <12> richiefrich: Correct. <21> Anyone know what to do with this: svn: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0: cannot open shared object file: Error 40 <6> nerd_, what if you type mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/mountpoint in a terminal? <22> is "EXT2-fs error (device hdc1) ..." bad? <2> nerd_, whats the error your ettin <2> gettin* <18> nanobanshee, the only thing i find with scsi stuff is the raid controlr <23> anyone got gnome 2.14 working on gentoo? <24> synapseattack: run revdep-rebuild -p <14> vaijr2002: you can't mount an extended partition, there is no filesystem on an extended partition...you should read about the differences between primary, extended, and logical partition types. <12> geezy: Hold on a second <8> vaijr2002: extended partition in itself isn't useful - what about logicals inside it? <9> chi: don't go into the MB bios, go into the scsi controller bios menu .... <21> Juckes: Thanks! <19> there is stuff in the partition though .. files i need <19> any way to fix it so i can access it? <12> richiefrich: I'm getting "Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: can't find /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab <14> vaijr2002: there can't be stuff in an extended partition. <8> chi: there's usually a different key to press when it boots, look for a message <19> hmm
