<0> :-D
<1> should i chmod /home to 777 so that ftp clients can access it easily or would that be a security risk?
<2> mtnbkr, which ones, perl, awk, or emacs?
<3> kerframil: Thanks
<4> signature16: yes that is indeed stupid :)
<5> johndough: dd but there is no undo
<6> puddingpimp: lol exactly. And then there are extended ones too sigh... ug lol
<4> johndough: try cfdisk >
<1> cornet: how can i allow ftp users to write/delete into their file without doing that?
<7> neddySeagon: thanks
<8> kerframil, i heard it whs fixed would u know when the fix will be out , why emerge --resume doen't play nice with --ask
<5> johndough: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/... bs=512 count=1 will do
<4> signature16: well user bob should have is files in /home/bob
<2> mtnbkr, I think I'll stick with perl regex, and scream and curse when one of the other variants does something differently
<9> kerframil -- I told you about a volume window that wouldn't go away the other night.... It's hardware related. There's no option in BIOS to disable it. The laptop in question is running the very latest BIOS. I enabled all the Dell extras in kernel
<10> signature16: that's a terrible idea!

<4> signature16: and should be logging into ftp as user bob
<10> signature16: my gosh
<4> signature16: thou why not use scp ??
<11> richiefrich: I never use --resume and am not aware of the issue to which you refer I'm afraid
<1> cornet: i dont even know what that is...i will google realy quickly
<10> signature16: i strongly recommend not using ftp btw, you should use sftp which is encrypted.
<12> or scp
<8> kerframil, ok
<4> signature16: if you have ssh installed and running then scp will "just work"
<10> scp is fine too seeing that it's the same thing
<11> GTswagger: did you find some additional information elsewhere?
<9> kerframil -- googling like crazy and not getting much help ATM
<1> cornet: how do i just make it so each user can add/delete files in their directory just like shared web hosting companies do?
<11> GTswagger: what about the 1-liner patch for the kmix sources? if it's hardware related then why is one software mixer working fine but another isn't?
<9> kerframil -- it's not KDE at all.... I even upgraded to kde 3.5.1 to make sure
<4> signature16: you set up ftp to allow user login (most just allow ananymous login by default)
<11> GTswagger: hmm, I see
<9> kerframil -- the volume screen he's getting that isn't going away -- it looks EXACTLY like the window he gets in Win XP when using the volume buttons
<13> Does anyone know how to transfer photos to a 5g ipod?
<8> coff3eBuZz u around?
<14> i dunno what happened. when i start session, my screen res is 640x480, and i cant change it to 1024x768. :( any clues?
<2> Enteleky, usb, firewire?
<1> cornet: i have proftpd setup...and it works...but users couldnt delete files before i chmod -R /home :(
<7> NeddySeagoon: ok i tried that and im getting this: ATA: abnormal status 0xd0 on port0x9E7 and a couple other stuff ending up with a input output error :(
<15> damn...i can't get the right flags for vlc to open up with a GUI with fully functionality
<2> Enteleky, it should just mount as a m***-storage device, either vfat or HFS+, depending on if it's a mac or pc one
<1> cornet: should i change /home/* to 77 instead of 777?
<14> i dunno what happened. when i start session, my screen res is 640x480, and i cant change it to 1024x768. :( any clues?
<11> GTswagger: hmm, well render me confused :/
<16> odla: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-gentoo.html
<16> odla: vlc recommends those use flags
<5> johndough: boot with the nodma option
<15> i've beent here it doesn't give me the flags i want
<17> I'm installing gentoo on my computer and I don't know what to use for the make.conf. the processor is an AMD sempron 3000+
<4> signature16: chmod 755 /home
<7> NeddySeagoon ok ill do that
<13> puddingpimp: I have it mounted... I need to know how to transfer photos to it though.
<5> johndough:It will be slow but that can be fixed later
<8> HIGH-FREQ, did it wotk?
<14> i dunno what happened. when i start session, my screen res is 640x480, and i cant change it to 1024x768. :( any clues?
<2> Enteleky, does it have one of those dumb db's like for music?
<14> :(
<9> kerframil -- join the club.... I don't even know where to being to explore this... is it coming form ACPI? From BIOS? If so why no ability to disable in BIOS?
<18> richiefrich: was doin somethin else...i gotta reboot now
<18> brb
<8> HIGH-FREQ, ok
<2> Enteleky, in that case, I don't know, try looking on Freshmeat or Sourceforge for something that does that
<17> I'm installing gentoo on my computer and I don't know what to use for the make.conf. the processor is an AMD sempron 3000+
<1> cornet: then the users can write files to the directory? is that correct?
<4> signature16: chmod -R 600 /home/* ; find /home/ -type d chmod 700 {} \;
<11> GTswagger: I don't know. I'm not sure I understand the problem anymore. I had thought it to be specifically an issue with kmix based on what was said previously but I think I misunderstood you.
<19> gnome is agight, but I miss shadeing the windows
<19> KDE has this capability and fluxbox
<4> signature16: that will fix your permissions in /home/
<10> Pineapple: we are all here to help and all, butif you can't even read enough documentation to answer that question gentoo is not for you.
<20> is it safe to expand an ext3 partition?
<21> axs the install failed
<4> signature16: i don't use proftp so can't help you with the setup
<22> ultralinux: you can set the keyboard shortcut that will shade windows in Desktop->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts

<23> cornet, it's a bad idea to forbid all x file permissions :(
<8> vienessewaltzer, what failed on the insall?
<22> ultralinux: I set mine to Alt-UpArrow
<21> axs it says that there was errors in adding the user name that i specified
<7> NeddySeagoon do you mean nodmraid
<19> blackace: thanks for the tip
<2> Pineapple, Sempron is Athlon-Xp dumbed down, no?
<24> puddingpimp: no.
<11> n17ikh|Lappy: it's safe to extend an ext3 *filesystem* (reductions can be problematic). resizing partitions is another matter.
<21> axs and it couldn't emerge kde-base/arts-3.5.0-rl
<24> puddingpimp: 32-bit sempron is athlon-xp. The name change is just for marketing reasons.
<1> cornet: how do i know who the owner is of /home? im using the ss64.com/bash/chmod.html to try and understand permissions stuff
<20> ah right.
<9> kerframil -- at the time I thought it was kmix ....... however it turns out it's related to the laptop's hardware.... the window that is coming up is hardware related. If you took this laptop... started Windows XP ... then pressed the Vol + button.. you'd get *the same* window... only it would go away
<21> anyone know how to fix this?
<8> vienessewaltzer, how did u add a user?
<2> marienz, so it's Ath-Xp arch though?
<9> kerframil -- in linux it comes up when you start x ... and won't go away
<21> i did it with the GTK
<11> GTswagger: oh
<24> puddingpimp: yes.
<20> so it would be better to just copy the data on the partion over to something else and then redo my partitions?
<24> puddingpimp: that is, the 32 bit version is. afaik there are also 64 bit semprons, I don't know what those are.
<11> GTswagger: is it something that's superimposed (like the volume indicator on a TV for instance when a remote control is used)?
<20> question
<9> kerframil -- yes!!
<11> GTswagger: aah
<7> NeddySeagoon do you mean nodmraid when you said nodma
<8> vienessewaltzer, sorry i don't know that way, i did the 2005.1 install
<15> 42,000 kb is 4.2 MB?
<21> richiefrich ok
<2> marienz, well I answered his question then, I thought a Sempron was to athlon, as Celeron is to P4, my bda
<20> in grub, if I have two partitions on hda, say /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda4, would it still be hd0,3 to access hda4?
<24> puddingpimp: as far as amd's marketing is concerned you're correct. Technically they're just athlon-xp's though.
<20> even if I delete the two partitions in the middle
<11> GTswagger: I never heard of such a problem. I'll try and keep an eye open for any information that might pertain to this topic. In the meantime did you try the laptops section of the forums yet?
<17> so would I do -march=athlon-xp?
<25> hi, is there a way to generate a kernel .config file, from the current system?
<8> vienessewaltzer if u weren't in the GTK I could walk u through it
<2> marienz, cool, can I get one for a Socket-A still?
<26> ninjakttty, if you have /proc/config.gz yes, else no.
<27> 18:19:08 < puddingpimp> marienz, well I answered his question then, I thought a Sempron was to athlon, as Celeron is to P4, my bda <---I believe that the Celeron was actually created in response to the Duron
<24> puddingpimp: should, afaik.
<9> kerframil -- been pouring through google ... will try there next
<11> GTswagger: ok
<25> ls
<21> richiefrich i think i'm gonna just try it without adding a user
<25> oops
<21> richiefrich and i'll just add the user later on
<17> so would I use -march=athlon-xp?
<25> roger55: thanks, I figured there had to be some way of doing it
<28> why would iwconfig give "operation not supported" when trying to setup an intel pro wireless 3945?
<2> Pineapple, yes
<28> i have masked net-wireless/wireless-tools to get the latest version
<17> alright, thanks
<26> ninjakttty, zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
<8> vienessewaltzer, when u reboot and if it boots i can help
<2> Pineapple, unless it's a 64-bit Sempron, and you want to run amd64, then you should check the docs, as I can't remember
<21> richiefrich ok thank you
<8> vienessewaltzer, np
<5> johndough: nope, there should be a nodma option to turn off IDE DMA
<19> blackace: how do I enter a new accelerator?
<17> nope, it's not
<15> boy if vlc doesn't work this time i'm confused cause i've compiled it with all the flags!
<26> NeddySeagoon, ide=nodma
<13> Does anyone know how to transfer pictures to an iPod?
<19> blackace: I am trying to enter alt up arrow
<29> what is the kde archive tool called under kde (the split kde ebuild)
<15> anyone know if there is a vlc irc channel?
<8> vienessewaltzer, just wondering first linux u tried, i mean gentoo?
<2> Pineapple, and if you want to run amd64, you need an amd64 install disk, no?
<5> roger55:At the boot prompt on the liveCD ?
<29> I used to be able to right click on a directory->actions->create archive...
<26> wilsby, kde-base/ark
