<0> hello, i want to ask questions on the "syntax" of the emerge command (i have read the man pages :). for example, in the man page it says "emerge [options] [action] [ebuild | tbz2file | cl*** | dependency]", how all these are combined, can sb give an example that combines multiple options and actions with an ebuild or a tbz2file or a cl*** or a dependency !!!this is the fourth time, help please :(!!!
<1> heh
<2> lol
<3> flooder s0xs
<2> yep
<4> Nostur: if you know the only thing you've edited is make.conf then simply locate it in the list and enter the number that's next to it ( 1), 2), 3) etc). You'll then get a list of options to perform only on that file including merging the old and new. Using -3 when you only have to merge a handful of files would be a pita
<2> LSD`: thx
<4> Nostur: once you've sorted the files that need it out you can go ahead and use -5
<0> bawb2 and xester : so i am not kicked
<2> LSD`: great, thanks
<5> pumping_lemma: if you continue to spam and ask annoying questions, i will make it so
<1> pumping_lemma: you are /ignore'd though
<2> LSD`:how i can locate it when grep and less not works? :/

<2> lol
<2> owned bawb2 :]
<0> arbiter_dev: what annoying questions? i am new to linux and i dunno how to combine all those options, is this annoying?
<6> opqdonut: ive been trying to goole that ext2/3 thing, i found a page that says simple cp -a works aswell and is less dangerous: http://www.kclug.org/pipermail/kclug/2001-April/003323.html
<5> pumping_lemma: the question wasn't annoying the first and second time you asked it
<7> TheReverant: yup
<2> pumping_lemma: if you are new to linux, do not use gentoo
<6> opqdonut: well, why would i need to use dd then? O.o
<0> Nostur: u cannot tell me which distro to use ok
<4> Nostur: Linux terminals have a built in scrollback buffer that you can use by pressing Shift+PgUP (provided you haven't already switched to another VT)
<1> Nostur: i dont know if thats sound, im pretty new to linux and gentoo has been wonderful to me
<8> Nostur: That's entirely inappropriate.
<5> pumping_lemma: read the gentoo docs on working with portage, you'll find all kinds of super neat options
<9> pumping_lemma: it's awfully rude to flood the channel.. and people will just end up ignoring you
<2> LSD`: oh :/ thanks
<7> TheReverant: no reason :) it's faster tho (but only marginally)
<7> TheReverant: and saves the tyouble of crating a fs on the target
<4> Stonefish: a lot of migraines around here would be cured if people new to gentoo got some grounding in Unix basics first
<2> bawb2: ok, suit your needs, pumping_lemma : i was on debian when starting, Stonefish k, sorry
<6> opqdonut: oh well, if i format it before copying there is a fs already, no?
<0> KristyX: i have asked normally four times
<7> TheReverant: tup
<9> pumping_lemma: and the suggestion by Nostur is a standard one.. newbies generally don't start with gentoo as it's very hands-on
<7> *yup
<0> i just did not flood
<10> hi
<10> :(
<7> TheReverant: sorry for the typos, the lag is terrible, over 600ms
<6> opqdonut: ah, ok, thanks again ;)
<4> pumping_lemma: 4 identical messages one after the other = flood
<7> np
<9> pumping_lemma: have you tried googling or even checking the gentoo documentation on the site? it's a pretty basic question
<6> i dont mind typos, i do them aswell :P
<6> make
<7> :D
<0> KristyX: i have been reading the man page of the emerege and just wonder how to combine all options,
<11> hi. designer segfaults, when i start it as user
<12> hi. During kernel-compiling I got this from make: http://rafb.net/paste/results/6PhlH397.html - Bootdisk was a 64-bit gentoo-version. stage-archive is x86/athlon-xp. I don't know what I have done wrong. Can anyone help me, please?
<11> people from #kde sayd its a problem that wt is build as root
<2> LSD`: its normal that i cant locate it or iam blind ?
<13> hey.. my clock is drifting away like a madman (not hwclock, just sysclock). I keep deleting /etc/adjtime, but it somehow comes back
<6> whats the command to check the filesystem of a device?
<14> fdisk should show you that in fo
<4> Nostur: if it's not in the list then perhaps it hasn't been tagged for updating
<4> TheReverant: fsck
<2> LSD`: so i can do -3 without worries ?
<15> what does this mean:eselect mysql set 1
<15> !!! Warning: FAILED: cd "/etc" && ln -sf "mysql-500" "mysql"
<4> Nostur: -5 you mean? ;) If you're absolutely positive you haven't edited anything les in the list then it should be safe
<16> TheReverant: mount
<6> heh 3 answers :P
<17> depending on your interpretation of "check"
<6> LSD`: fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
<6> fsck: fsck.ntfs: not found fsck: Error 2 on executing fsck.ntfs for /dev/hda5
<18> TheReverant: df
<10> gnome or KDE
<16> or du
<4> TheReverant: I think you need ntfsprog for fsck.ntfs
<18> kde
<4> ntfsprogs*

<19> pud err0rr # emerge -pv portage
<19> Segmentation fault
<19> :{
<20> brainiac_ghost: KDE has more features, Gnome looks clearer and might be more usable.
<21> err0rr: cool :)
<20> brainiac_ghost: I would recommend KDE altough I'm using Fluxbox now
<5> dang it all, i could have sworn i had a freecell game installed
<19> python dies on me on "import portage"
<22> Gnome is based on a LGPL library (so u can develop non-GPL stuff with it) while KDE isn't
<5> did aisleriot just disappear on me?
<10> KoolKaot: i used to like KDE, but gnome looks ok
<5> blakkino: incorrect, and i suspect you're thinking of GTK vs QT
<10> silly superbowl
<20> brainiac_ghost: Customizing Gnome is more complicated because it hides much options
<22> arbiter_dev, what is incorrect?
<18> KDE is far way better, Linus really got the point
<20> brainiac_ghost: Linus ranting about Gnome -> http://mail.gnome.org/archives/usability/2005-December/msg00021.html
<23> no flame wars please
<23> this is a gentoo support channel. Take the flames elsewhere
<20> LSD`: His argumentation is quite right, I think
<4> Linus, along with RMS, are at the top of my "people I wish would die already" list
<23> KoolKaot: let me know when you're done
<18> LSD`: you must die
<24> :\
<23> noawq: and you must get back on-topic
<25> Has anyone tried hanno's xgl?
<26> I'm just happy to be here. Anyone need help?
<15> yes
<27> Can anyone help me... When I try to emerge something I get a message, and nothing gets emerged.. http://pastebin.com/541782
<23> Mnemonic^: type Yes
<15> DrChandra what does this mean:eselect mysql set 1
<15> <15> !!! Warning: FAILED: cd "/etc" && ln -sf "mysql-500" "mysql"
<15> They cant seem to help me in mysqal :(
<27> doc|work, I allready did .. Watch the following message
<23> Mnemonic^: in that paste it shows you typing Y, if it doesn't work, file a bug report :/
<26> wrathzz: It means "tell gentoo to select mysql"
<15> DrChandra how do i do that?
<26> wrathzz: I don't have mysql installed, so I can't guess at what the modules itself does.
<27> doc|work, But it is all packages .. ?
<15> ok
<23> Mnemonic^: then don't use -a
<26> wrathzz: Try 'eselect list-modules' to see if you have mysql. Otherwise, just try entering that command.
<27> doc|work, No difference
<27> doc|work, Dont you see the following message about "How to use ebuild" ?
<26> wrathzz: Oh, I see your other post now. It can't enable mysql because "/etc/mysql-500" is missing. Are you sure you have mysql installed? WHy is that file not there?
<28> anyone has some weird errors like glibc detected on the system ?
<23> Mnemonic^: you shouldn't be seeing that
<26> wrathzz: The mysql people don't know about "eselect". That's a gentoo tool.
<15> DrChandra it must be there i did the emerge mysql
<27> doc|work, I know, I was just wondering if you dident see it in the pastebin..
<23> Mnemonic^: try emerge perl
<23> or emerge -u perl
<28> anyone has some weird errors as installation of a package like glibc detected? is the only solution to emerge with -sandbox ?
<26> wrathzz: Is the file there? Try doing a qfile on it, to see what package it should come from.
<27> doc|work, Same result
<23> Mnemonic^: it can't be the same result. It shouldn't be asking you with those flags.
<27> doc|work, Ok everything else is the same.
<23> put the output from it into pastebin please
<15> DrChandra ok brb
<27> doc|work, I have updated the pastebin for yuo.
<27> you even
<23> Mnemonic^: ok, file a bug with bugs.gentoo.org
<27> doc|work, Hmm .. Ok
<29> I want to setup a simple SMTP server for internal network... what would be the best application to use ?
<29> I have used Qmail before, but it is not really what I want... I want something a little easier to setup.
<29> In a channel of 961 guests there are no takers ? LOL :)
<30> diilbertAtwork: KMail?
<30> Oops, nothing. :)
<31> when I try to emerge dbus, I get a make failed, and this error message: natMessage.cc:8:21: Message.h: No such file or directory
<11> strace designer says "access("/usr/kde/3.5/share/locale/en_US/LC_MESSAGES/kio.mo", R_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
<32> is there a tray plugin for thunderbird ?
