<0> dracony: haha, ya...everyone was like 'wtf'
<1> Vwake: yeah and 7 guys left
<0> hahaha
<1> Vwake: didnt you notice the smile at the end?
<0> nope
<2> dracony: how to chroot to gentoo on hdd?
<1> Doncha: now go to kernel config and add networking support
<2> @ first i need to chroot
<1> Doncha:yeah
<2> how to do that? damn forgot
<3> what's the name of that tool that shows when a package were installed?
<1> Doncha: chroot /mnt/gentoo/
<2> dracony: done
<2> now make menuconfig?
<4> What do I select as processor type for an Intel Duo Core?
<4> Centrino ver.

<2> dracony: what to choose in kernel for dhcp?
<1> Doncha: device drivers- networking support
<2> thereis marked one
<1> Doncha: found the networking dir?
<5> linux n00b here - what can I use to find a string of characters in a file ... I don't know the name of the file, or where it is ...
<1> ok someone needs help?
<6> Rennen: find . -print0 | xargs -0 grep string
<5> k, i'll give it a try - thanks
<7> DrChandra: What's wrong with grep -r? :P
<5> i thought find might do it, but i manned it .. didn't see that
<8> im gettin' a failed to set user font at boot time, it suggests i select a size or something but dunno where :/
<1> guys if noone needs help ill just go
<1> so if you do be quick
<9> dracony, man, you need to be patient. If someone needs help, they'll say it :)
<6> cruxeternus: Force of habit. More options to find can limit the search to certain things, like recent files.
<6> Rennen: find . -type f -print0 | xargs -0 grep string
<1> kdag: compile it in kernel config, there are many fonts
<10> Rennen, grep -R "blah" /
<7> DrChandra: Understood.
<4> Anyone? What is the processor type for an Intel Duo Core Centrino in the LiveCD installer?
<8> Dracony compile what exactly and where, do you know?
<11> x86 I ***ume, dcompiler </Guess>
<8> i can check my kernel
<1> kdag: when do you get the error?
<8> make a new one
<6> cruxeternus: find . -type f -name "*.txt" -print0 | grep -v boohoo.txt | xargs -0 grep string
<8> at boot eime
<8> time
<4> hmm, that's so generic though
<4> I'd like to be able to use both cores.
<1> kdag: casn you paste it?
<12> hi, when making a 32 bit system should i use CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
<12> or CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu"
<12> i'm ***uming the latter
<1> kdag: when at boot time in some runscript or directly at boot?
<13> MartinFC, in general you shouldn't mess with chost ...
<14> hola a todos desde colombia
<13> HAYNER, english only please
<6> dcompiler: Whether it uses both cores is not determined by the CPU type. Each core is going to be something like i686, so that's what you want. Then compile the kernel for SMP support, and add other flags to get the dual core working.
<14> alguien que hable espaol y me quiera ayudar con linux
<7> DrChandra: grep -r string * | grep -v boohoo.txt :P
<4> Ah, thanks much.
<8> HAYNER, ve a /join #gentoo-es
<1> kdag: device drivers- video-console display driver
<14> ok
<12> DrEeevil, well for Nocona based processers, when i used the x86_64 build of gentoo thats what it asked, but since moving to a 32bit world, it now wants i386...what about i686 ??
<15> cruxeternus: find . -type f ! -name 'idontwantyou.txt' -name '*.txt' -print0 | xargs -0 grep -l "FOO"
<16> Rennen, grep -R <string> ./* will search the present working dir recursively
<8> Dracony tx! ;)
<7> Hey, hey. I'm not going to duel you find/xargs/grep guys with just grep. :P
<1> kdag: also see filesystem support - native language support
<17> hi! how can I check which kernel module(driver) holds which device file node?
<13> MartinFC, you can set it to i686 if you are careful and read the instructions
<1> hoe: you can do vice versa
<6> cruxeternus: Yes, but why search files for a string, only to strip out the matches against files you don't want? Why not skip searching them to begin with? nm, it's not a big deal.
<13> MartinFC, there's a good chance you'll make your system unusable by changing chost
<5> NeddySeagoon: i am running both find a grep right now - taking a while - i have a lot of **** on this box - it is my backup/pdc
<15> cruxeternus: find -print0 | xargs -0 is more effeciant
<1> hoe press '?' on a place in kernel config itll tell what module it is
<18> what's the typical refresh rate that an LCD panel can handle?

<15> Spelt correctly, of course :)
<1> ram_einstein 1 HZ
<7> DrChandra: I concede the point about power/efficiency. But I reserve the point about simplicity for solving a self-proclaimed "linux n00b"'s problem :)
<8> Dracony and something else, any idea why i have no /dev/mouse gpm is not working cause of that, but the synaptics touchpad works fine
<5> but it's a fast box ...
<18> dracony: funny, yes
<17> dracony: great, and some general way, ie. just installed any distro, is it possible to check?
<1> kdag: well symlink it
<19> hi
<1> kdag: /dev/input/mouse0 to /dev/mouse
<16> Rennen, What are you rying to find ?
<1> hoe: you want to know which module is for which hardware?
<16> kdag, You probably have /dev/input/mice /dev/mouse is depreciartedd
<5> NeddySeagoon: well some lost cron job I think
<1> hoe: google or read source
<12> DrEeevil, there is no system as of yet so..looking through documentation now
<17> dracony: i want to know sth like 8139too->/dev/eth1
<1> kdag: as i said well symlink it
<5> i have my crons e-mail me - and there is one that is e-mailing me the same thing over and over from back when I set it up
<5> so, it might be stuck in qmail
<1> hoe: hmm ):
<17> dracony: on a running system i mean :)
<6> cruxeternus: Well, ok, but with my method, they get to learn how to pipe commands together, which is an important fundamental concept in Unix. :)
<20> how can i tell what package is dependent on another?
<5> but it is screwed up cron - i typed rsynccc instead of rsync
<1> hoe: google
<8> dracony tx again
<20> ie. can i see what program is calling X11 to be installed?
<1> kdag: ok
<1> hoe: what do you need that for?
<16> Rennen, you have a lot of searching to do ...
<5> yep
<1> ok i helped like 5 guys today
<1> next
<16> hoe, did you build networking in or makes it modules ?
<16> dracony, leave some for someone esle :)
<1> NeddySeagoon: im gonna beat a record
<16> dracony, go for it!
<1> NeddySeagoon: i wonder what current record is
<17> dracony: i do know that linux hwinfo prints this kind of info but that's no standard command
<7> NeddySeagoon probably owns it.
<21> 6
<17> NeddySeagoon: modules
<7> or roger55
<22> bashusrSE: sometimes emerge -tpv somepackage will help, sometimes hard masking xorg-x11 then trying the emerge will help
<1> hoe: you want me to find what package it is in?
<17> dracony: no, ty :)
<17> ty all, bye!
<16> hoens, do lsmod .. the ethernet module at the bottom of the list is eth0
<1> hoe: its in krusader
<23> Darn ! lolz..
<1> hoe: why do you want that module info?
<23> universal cd is insall cd for all distros except. x86
<23> while livecd is made only for x86
<23> And no one would tell me that.. :(
<7> hoe left... he was being bombarded by too much help
<1> |lostbyte|: ):
<6> hoe: Module info for what? To see what driver hooked a device? lshw shows that.
<1> |lostbyte| hmm i never knew that
<16> DrChandra, too late - he left
<1> DrChandra: im also very curious why would one need that info
<23> dracony: That explains why there is no universal cd for x86
<1> |lostbyte|: my install cd is 2004.3
<1> i have a retro gentoo
<24> yikes!
<1> :P
<23> dracony: I am looking at 2006.0
<1> :P respect man :P
<6> dracony: It also shows which hardware doesn't have a device driver hooked to it, so lshw can be used as a test to see when you've selected and loaded the right device support.
<22> i have minimals ranging from 1.4 to 2006.0 in a big stack, i just grab one at random when i do a new install =) it really makes no difference
<1> DrChandra: i wonder what will it say bout my cam
<1> DrChandra: i dont have lshw
<6> dracony: Prolly 0x0c45:610b as the ID, and no driver.
<1> DrChandra: :P ill try anyway
