<0> acidfreeze: mount should tell you.
<1> which is basically like .. installing i guess .. ot emerging to the protege think
<2> ok
<1> **** .. you kwn what i dont think i will ever .. umm lemme say install gentoo /
<3> acidfreeze: mount -t auto /dev/... /mnt/...
<3> and then mount
<1> sorry my language
<4> if anyone could help me just get my wireless working on a fresh gentoo install i'd appreciate it, please pm me, i have correct drivers for my wireless card, just need help on what to type in, etc
<2> yea.. so as it mounts it will tell me?
<5> well, emerge downloads the neccesary files, compiles them and makes them run, kinda
<6> ...
<1> ic ..
<1> intrestin ..
<1> wierd microsoft hasnt umm stolen anything
<1> yet
<1> well ideas i mean

<3> if you mount it with -t auto it will automagicly use the proper filesystem
<3> and then just mount will give you an overview of mounted filesystems (and types too)
<0> bit`: Where have you been hiding out at?
<7> sorcerer11: they want portage ;)
<2> well im not trying to mount it
<5> sorcerer11: not weird, microsoft wants money for everything, open source doesn't ;)
<2> i just want to know the file system stype.. i can remember which i chose
<3> cfdisk /dev/hda ?
<3> :)
<6> RiverRat, I've been here I think and I'm in ops too
<1> true .
<2> perfect.. ty
<1> i like the idea of protege
<2> is protege the french version>?
<2> hehe
<1> i soo badly want to install gentoo right now .. but check this out my room is a mess
<1> and bloody hell
<8> sorcerer11: You should read a book written by a guy calling himself Robert X Cringley ... I believe the book is called Triumph of the Nerds
<2> sorcer: just do it..
<2> nike
<1> such a mess .. i soo want to do rths
<1> yeah lol
<1> lol
<1> guys i want to
<1> i want to get into this world .. of .. not MS
<2> i made the choose at 5 am yesterday
<1> ok .. i kwn this might sound gay but what are some of the significant things .
<1> gentoo could do .. that other operating system cant ?
<3> if you wan to get into the world you might wanna read the book "the cathedral and the bazar"
<8> sorcerer11: in that book, he documents how Microsoft got its start. They bought the original QDOS, didn't tell IBM, and convinced IBM to let them resell it. They made a fortune on that one transaction alone. The rest of the history of DOS, and later Windows is a succession of stories like that.
<3> it's a collection of papers :)
<2> every thing u compile.. is compiled for your system,, cpu..
<1> daam
<2> as i understand it
<2> so stuff performs alot better
<1> yeah
<1> more fine tuned i guess
<5> so nobody ever used "Captive" for ntfs? :P
<2> hahaha po0ky.., my questions was such a stoner one.,.
<5> sorcerer11: never tried linux yet?
<1> well i mean i used knopix
<1> umm thats about it
<5> that's a start :)
<1> i didnt undertstans the sys files and stuff
<5> it might be wise to try ubuntu first (I'm not looking for an argue here!)
<1> i mean i understand windows coz iam the idiot .
<0> acidfreeze: That's correct but the real advantage is that compiling gets rid of a lot of the dependancy hell of other things. That and Gentoo is a live system; it is always current. There is never a need to reinstall to upgrade. I know devs that still install from version 1.4 from 2003.
<5> heh
<5> Ubuntu is *very* easy to install and run
<2> i like his answer better sorc.. hehe
<5> almost like windows, only it runs better of cource
<1> yeah i knw i should but see i want to understand the nuts and bolts
<1> of it while installing it
<0> acidfreeze: And tab completes nicks. :)
<5> sorcerer11: well, you have to start somewher
<1> i mean i could have installed mandrake and stuff
<5> not mandrake, ubuntu :P
<1> but ..
<1> i mean
<5> you can try and experiment from there
<5> and once you think you have got the hang of it

<5> and found the right manuals
<2> Riverat: me no savey the last thing u said...
<5> might try to get gentoo working
<5> took me ages :P
<2> could u reword.. lol
<9> things get interesting with gentoo if you *can't* find the right manual :P
<5> RiverRat: I upgraded my world yesterday, and the day before...
<5> took me two full days of compiling :P
<0> acidfreeze: Type "rive<tab>" and see
<10> guys, what is nptl ?
<5> zsz, then there is forums.gentoo.org, then there is google, and then there is irc.freenode.net :)
<11> where can i check my firewall setting?
<0> native posix linux threads
<1> sorry
<1> got d/c
<0> native posix threading library
<0> sorry
<5> sowe've noticed sorcerer11 :)
<2> oh thats coo..
<2> ty
<1> man .. i dunno
<1> i guess iam just one lazy idiot .. i have cl*** @ 9 30
<5> sorcerer11: it's 9:45..? ur late!
<1> collage ****s .. and i need to clean my room and do my laundry
<1> lol
<1> and my gf being a bitch
<12> time zones ftw
<1> and i want to knw gentoo
<1> soo badly
<12> "it's 10:45, you're more than an hour late"
<10> guys, what is nptl ?
<1> ummm .. guys iam in toledo ohio
<2> lol.. dude u got some sick perverted thing for gentoo
<12> ^zeon^: native posix threading library
<1> lol
<2> hehe :] j/p
<1> lol
<1> hhahah
<12> that was just inevitable.
<9> how do I get rid of my clock being UTC?
<12> too much lol is bad for the health
<9> I want it to use local
<10> Japsu: arright, glibc-2.4 seems to be "nptl" only, does that mean anything ?
<0> zsz: link /etc/timezone like the handbook says.
<9> tried it already
<2> nano -w /etc/conf.d/clock
<9> no go
<9> acidfreeze, did that also
<1> ummm .. why did i get kicked out ?
<5> acidfreeze: if /etc/timezone is set wrong that can give problems :P
<5> sorcerer11: you talk too much
<1> oh ok
<12> ^zeon^: well it means they've changed the default threading library from linuxthreads to nptl. in 2.3 you had to USE="nptl nptlonly" to get the behaviour that's default in 2.4.
<1> my bad
<2> then change CLOCK="utc" to local?
<2> oh i dunno then...
<5> acidfreeze: yes
<9> CLOCK="local"
<9> /etc/timezone says "Europe/Tallinn"
<12> ^zeon^: basically nptl is said to give a performance boost for heavily multithreaded applications. therefore being "nptl only" is a good thing and should not be worried about.
<2> ty for help.. l8ter
<5> zsz: what does date say?
<9> Thu Apr 6 10:49:38 UTC 2006
<10> Japsu: did u use gnome-2.14.0 ?
<5> strange
<9> indeed
<5> try changing to another timezone
<12> ^zeon^: I made the switch from linuxthreads to nptl some 6 months ago with glibc 2.3.5. I've noticed no random application breakage, nor have I noticed any performance gains :)
<12> ^zeon^: no, I use KDE
<13> i dont got a /var/log/messages, anyone know how i can get the system to log to it as usual
<14> zparta: syslogng does that
<0> zparta: Have you emerged a logger?
