Comments:

<0> poised - he could enable the mouse in the console
<0> to see if the problem is specific to X
<1> eddie: yep, hmm get X working first with ATI the builting x drivers do work - you may need to change the kernel if you go for ati drivers though
<1> foxhacker: did it drop in the console as well (not terminal)
<2> poised, it drops in the console too
<3> Anyone know how I should deal with my portage-blocking issue?
<3> [blocks B ] >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.99 (is blocking media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.8762)
<2> poised, i use gdm for console mouse and it won't work there either
<3> Doesn't feel right to kill that, since it feels like I want nvidia :-/
<0> Kimusan - get rid of the app that is blocking
<4> Kimusan: stop using hardmasked packages?
<1> foxhacker: hmm that is really in an x environment though
<3> blackace: modular X, you mean?
<5> is anyone here experianced with getting gentoo running on a system with an ati video card?
<6> kimusan that xorg-server have problems with the drivers the nvidia
<4> Kimusan: I mean unsupported packages with known problems, that are masked because we don't support them. yes.

<0> spaking of USB.. i have a little problem of my own that I cant seem to get around: irq 11: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
<3> cyclopsld: ok
<6> kimosan downgrade the xorg-server and the xf86-input-mouse and keyboard if you dont do that you cant load the X
<3> blackace: That was a long "yes" :-)
<7> okay
<7> first install reboot. wish me luck o_o
<1> eddie: have you read http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers
<4> Kimusan: well, you apparently weren't getting my meaning of "unsupported" :)
<7> (even though I have done it dozen of times, it still gives me the butterflyes =P )
<5> poised: yeah i have. they dont have any info on my card
<4> so I elaborated :)
<3> hehe
<3> elaboration is good
<5> poised: and i think i found what in my logfile started it all
<1> eddie: I was not very clear above - X can be configured to use ati (kernel level config) but you can also use ATI's own drivers
<8> The nvidia module is failing to load on my system. I've recently recompiled my kernel, but i have reinstalled the module since then. I think i've left a option out of my kernel. the error shown in dmesg when i try to load the nvidia module is Unknown symbol remap_page_range and pci_find_cl***
<8> It was working before, but i started my kernel config from scratch
<1> eddie: is the card new?
<5> poised: yeah. i went through the whole kernel level config for ati drivers. the prob is i got nforce 3 pci to agp bus, and amd64 agp to straighten out
<5> poised: not really. x850 pro xt. i got it working great in xp
<3> cyclopsld: hmmm, I have a working X now, with x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.2-r4. So it feels like I should mask the one it's trying to install now, untill it plays nice with nvidia?
<1> eddie: well forget agp for now - I personally think it is a pain installing ati cards - you are probably going to have to build it up slowly
<3> It wants to install x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.0
<9> Kimusan, yes you should add it to /etc/portage/package.mask
<1> eddie: get to a working x first
<10> would someone be able to help me with modular xorg?
<5> poised: i can boot to gnome, if i don't use xorg.conf. hell i even got my sound working.
<3> tdr: doing that
<10> it's having problems with glx, dri, and my video driver (all three, woo)
<11> when I startx, it returns an error saying that it cant find default font "fixed", and it dies. In xorg.xonf, there are around 6 font folders listed, but none of them exist (/usr/share/fonts/*). Anybody knows what I can do?
<1> eddie: so you have some of it working already - glxinfo
<12> Ok... I'm going crazy with this crap. I'm trying to use the Gentoo liveCD to copy some files onto an NTFS partition since windows decided to eat itself. No matter what options I place in the mount line, it will not allow me to mount it as rw, only ro. I've tried rw in the -o, -w, even what I have on my normal Gentoo install that works. Nothing is getting through though.. driving me insane. Any ideas?
<9> Shirakawasuna, fix the video card in general first, then get dri, etc working
<10> tdr: that was my plan
<0> is there a command that lists what device is using which IRQ?
<13> what is "-flagname%" mean? I can't seem to change it when I prefix emerge -pv with USE..
<9> TBKDan, a livecd is not going to let you write to NTFS
<3> TBKDan: Can't you do mount remount?
<14> TBKDan: not possible
<10> tdr: any idea on how I can get my video card working? (willing to help? :) )
<10> DarkMorph: % indicates that it's new
<10> DarkMorph: nothing to worry about
<3> TBKDan: ah, ok, ignore my comment then
<13> how do I toggle +- ?
<12> tdr: Are there any LiveCD's that will? Perhaps knoppix?
<10> ? USE flags
<13> oh nevermind, yellow is just hard to see
<15> http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml
<9> Shirakawasuna, what kind of card do you have
<13> it was working
<10> tdr: 915gm
<10> (intel)
<9> TBKDan knoppix cd's used to have captive ntfs writing support, not sure if they do anymore
<16> TBKDan: I don't rmemeber which but yes there is a live CD with beta NTFS-write. I think it's knoppix
<12> Thanks tdr and rickest, I'll check it out.
<1> larzen: cat /proc/interrupts
<17> who was just wanting my glxinfo?
<1> eddie: me
<10> tdr: to install, I removed xorg-x11, added the list of ~x86 dependencies, added VIDEO_CARDS="i810" to my make.conf (plus some input devices) and ran emerge xorg-x11
<17> poised: sorry, had to startx

<1> eddie_: you do know that if gnome runs then you have already started X
<18> any recommendations for USE flags for XFCE4 (beside the obvious)?
<0> poised - excellent! thanks!
<9> Shirakawasuna, does that use the normal 915 kernel stuff?
<17> poised: yeah. i guess you got into this whole thing half way. i need direct rendering
<3> tdr: ah, crap. Now it whines about everything else that it wants to install, after masking that xorg-server.
<9> Kimi_Work, like?
<17> poised: glxinfo http://pastebin.com/759064
<1> eddie_: and your config file has been screwed up
<9> Kimusan, ^^
<3> x11-drivers/xf86-input-spaceorb-1.1.0
<3> Which btw, is something I don't want.
<1> eddie_: lsmod
<1> eddie_: you are looking for fglxrs
<10> tdr: I'm not sure...
<10> tdr: I ***umed that it did
<1> eddie_: fglrx
<3> Lots of new input devices it wants to install that I don't need support for
<10> tdr: any idea how I can find out? Most people reported that the 'i810' driver worked for them
<17> poised http://pastebin.com/759067 lsmod
<9> Shirakawasuna, that's for X though, you also need the good stuff in the kernel
<3> tdr: http://nopaste.php-q.net/216947
<17> poised no fglrx
<10> tdr: It was working with xorg 6.8, so I'm fairly sure I have everything enabled, at least as a module
<1> eddie_: ok so you think that the ATI drivers will not works so you want to use the X11 dri drivers?
<9> Shirakawasuna, when i used intel, i turn on agpgart + drm in the kernel + the intel under drm (and picked 915) ... built them all in. then x worked with the i810
<10> tdr: well I've modprobed both i810 and i915
<17> poised i tried the emerge ati-drivers and still no direct support
<1> eddie_: agp and direct rendering are different that is something to bear in mind
<10> tdr: i810 is the non-drm, I believe, and 915 the drm
<1> eddie_: ok, the ATI drivers will probably work but you need to change your kernel
<17> poised: yeah, i know i am trying to run world of warcraft and other 3d games in gentoo
<17> poised: not a problem. what kernel should i use?
<16> eddie: did you eselect opengl set ati?
<10> tdr: any idea on how to upload the output of startx?
<10> tdr: startx > /home/nick/startx didn't work
<17> rickest: yeah opengl works its not a problem
<1> eddie_: right make sure under video you are using vesa vga support
<9> Shirakawasuna, check your Xorg.0.log and see if it's what you want
<9> Shirakawasuna, i810 covers all intel in X iirc. 915 in the kernel is the good driver, as opposed to the old one
<1> eddie_: that eselect opengl set ati will automatically change you xorg.conf file
<8> I also get a warning to that effect when i emerge nvidia-kernel
<9> Shirakawasuna, you're running modular now right (just keyworded it?)
<8> What is wrong?
<10> tdr: yep
<8> How can i get these symbols?
<10> tdr: http://pastebin.ca/62018
<9> Shirakawasuna, did you comment out or remove the MODULES and RGB path lines in your xorg.conf?
<6> kimusan yes works fine
<19> If I re-install from a livecd, is it totally necessary to clear out the disk first, or can i just write over an existing install?
<10> tdr: I don't have anything named MODULES or RGB in my xorg.conf
<1> shalrath: clearout the disk would be best for clean install
<10> tdr: do youy mean Section "Files" (enter) RgbPath "/usr/lib/X11/rgb"?
<19> its tempting.
<1> shalrath: you can keep home partitions
<9> Shirakawasuna, no drivers avalable is the bad thing. did you emerge xf86-drivers-i810?
<19> yeah, ill just have to copy my LVM info
<1> shalrath: but system paritions best to get rid of
<9> Shirakawasuna, yes. you don't need htose paths
<1> shalrath: make copies of all etc files you might need
<10> tdr: yes
<9> Shirakawasuna, if you're using an xorg.conf from 6.8 you've also got another path set that you don't need
<10> tdr: xf86-video-i810-1.6.0
<19> I could just boot the livecd, then wipe out everything but /root and /mnt where my files are at
<10> tdr: so I can comment out the entire Section "Files"?
<20> where are cookies stored?
<8> The nvidia module is failing to load on my system. I've recently recompiled my kernel, but i have reinstalled the module since then. I think i've left a option out of my kernel. the error shown in dmesg when i try to load the nvidia module is Unknown symbol remap_page_range and pci_find_cl***
<8> I also get a warning to that effect when i emerge nvidia-kernel
<8> (I'm on gentoo)
<21> is there an automated way to re-emerge all modules (like usb-pwc-re or nvidia-kernel) upon kernel upgrade without having to set the symlinks?
<9> Shirakawasuna, no. just take out rgbpath and modulepath
<22> (Sorry for that.)
<9> Shirakawasuna, sorry was slow, i had to create an old xorg.conf to see the name
