<0> likewhoa: I created the All directory in /usr/portage/packages. Then I put the file there, and emerge --resume, but it still tries to download tzdata2005r.tar.gz am I missing something?
<1> eichi, You cannot do this portage places a lock atleast as far as I know.
<2> i have a thinkpad r52 with an ati radeon. should i use framebuffer? can i use framebuffer and the ati driver?
<3> vagrant:what about mtab and smartd.conf?
<0> nevermind, I just emerge xorg-x11 and now there are only 11 dependancies
<0> I hope this works
<4> anyone using Plesk with either gentoo or gentoo-hardened ?
<5> sess: what are you trying to accomplish? only binary package tarballs created by portage belong in that directory (such packages end in .tbz2 and there is no such package as tzdata in portage anyway)
<0> is there a global file I can put those use flags so I don't have to type them before every emerge?
<6> vieirar:~> i know a lot of ppl (me too) who do that often
<7> so, m0p, you can't even ping your own IP?
<7> that's whack
<7> m0p, what about 127.0.0.1 ?
<8> I can ping loopback fine
<9> eichi: portage is supposed to have locking that keeps more then one database update from happening at the same time. I've never tried to rely on it. YOu could wind up with a damaged database. Since portage wants to emerge in order of dependency, and does the builds in parallel, you don't need to be doing more then one emerge at a time.
<5> sess: I think you need to read the handbook

<8> just nothing on my network
<0> kerframil: I am trying to build and install xorg-x11, it tried to download that file but from all the mirrors It couldn't find it terminating my emerge. I found it via google and downloaded it, so I wanted to know where to put it to continue on with my build
<5> sess: the question you've just asked is addressed here for example: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=2
<7> sess, there's more than one place to put them.
<5> sess: in that case it should go in /usr/portage/distfiles
<8> When eth0 is started with the init script, it has a [!!] next to "route gw default gateway 192.168.1.1" or something like that
<10> anyone had experience getting ipw3945 to work on gentoo?
<8> But it doesn't tell me the error
<0> thanks guys, Im sorry im just frustrated. I just printed the handbook (101 pages) and will be taking it with me to work tonight
<11> kerframil u were right, they fix that error yesterday quick :)
<7> m0p, that means eth0 never starts completely
<5> richiefrich: yep
<8> kojiro: Hmm? It displays in ifconfig and dmesg says that there is a link
<0> I just wanted to get X running so I could begin troubleshooting the problems Im going to have with my ati radeon mobility m6 and dri
<12> sess: add the USE flags in /etc/make.conf or /etc/portage/package.use, NEVER in command line...
<9> eichi: One way to speed it up, however, is to use --fetchonly to get all the packages downloaded at once, and then redo the emerge without --fetchonly to quickly do all the compiles. THat saves the network wait in the middle of the compile process.
<5> sess: ok
<13> m0p, i just went through the same thing try eth1
<14> startkeylogger
<7> m0p, yeah, you're right. What I mean is that the initscript never starts completely
<7> m0p, in other words /etc/init.d/net.eth0 stop should fail...
<9> Stop it with the keylogger stuff.
<8> chi, there isn't an eth1, do you mean rename eth0 to eth1 in /etc/config.d/net?
<15> keylogger?
<12> sess: m6 ly here and works like a charm, dri and glx enabled
<8> kojiro: Yeah, it says that eth0 wasn't started
<15> Ah, that keylogger stuff
<16> Hey if anyone in here works on the CDs, the 2006.0 CD doesn't load the dvorak keymay.
<9> Def: It's spam. Ignore it.
<16> keymap*
<13> m0p, sorry i didnt read all you had typed i thought you were talking about a diffrent problem
<12> sess: open source drivers, not proprietary, btw
<1> eichi, Huh in the past I had gotten the emerge was locked and to remove the lock file if portage exited and left it open. I was just able to emerge 2 programs at the sametime. Not sure if this would be a good idea though.
<15> Actually, it is an annoyance
<0> linuxblues: Im gonna have to bother you soon, I was having a god aweful time getting it to not lock up in debian with unstable xorg 6.9
<8> jon_: None of the keymaps load for me
<17> I have a few questions
<15> People should get their butts kicked for it
<17> How do you set defaults in KDE, like for all music to be via XMMS
<0> linuxblues: it would work great but as soon as my cursor left the rendered window, it would crash. I was using foobillards to test. Can you try it and see if it works for you?
<9> Emerge does builds in parallel, so it's already going as fast as it can when only one is running.
<16> Sakkath, Right click on the file type, click properties.
<17> And secondly, the php complains about berkdb, i can either disable berkdb use flag (i never had it enabled to begin with) or enable the dba use flag (dev-lang/php with mysql cli apache2 uses)
<17> jon_: thank you
<18> cant get fbsplash to work. starts at middle of boot process. tryed everything from the wiki. someone knows how the livecd does it?
<19> uh oh, my "emerge sync" seems to be stuck at updating the portage cache, 50%
<12> sess: ok, wait a moment, I'm emerging stuff right now
<19> still high cpu/memory use
<17> zaggy_nl: are you using a local mirror?
<9> eichi: Put 'MAKEOPTS="-j2"' in /etc/make.conf, and leave it at that. Don't do more then one emerge at a time.
<8> kojiro: the eth0 init script started fine when my gateway was something other than 192.168.1.1, when I first configured it I made a typo
<19> Sakkath, euh, lemme check
<1> Sakkath, You can also go into the kontrol => kde component => file ***ociations
<5> zaggy_nl: exhibit a considerable amount of patience or upgrade to portage-2.1_pre (which has a better metadata cache implementation)
<17> vieirar: thank you
<8> maybe I should change my routers' IP to something else, maybe it's just a little bug
<17> zaggy_nl: SYNC variable in /etc/make.conf
<19> kerframil, well, I thought using commandline 'emerge sync' would do the job ..faster
<17> zaggy_nl: eix-sync :-p
<8> although it's strange, it works fine on the CD, and it worked fine previously on my old Gentoo installation with my Intel Pro Gigabit.
<12> sess: tuxracer and supertux works fine

<19> Sakkath, eix-sync ?
<5> zaggy_nl: faster than what? the reason that problem occurs is because of the complexity of the portage tree combined with the poor nature of the cache implementation in portage-2.0
<7> m0p, what IP do you get on the livecd?
<17> zaggy_nl: you don't use eix??
<8> zaggy_nl: It usually takes ages around 50%, it freezes about 52 for me
<19> kerframil, sorry, I was confused with porthole
<0> linuxblues: awesome, I look forward to using this new distro
<5> Sakkath: it doesn't matter whether he uses eix. he still has to sync :)
<0> what version of Xorg are you all using?
<8> kojiro: I use ifconfig to change my IP to 192.168.1.2 and my gateway to 192.168.1.1, I turned DHCP off cause it gives me some DNS problems
<0> i seem to be gettin gxorg base 6.8.2-r6?
<17> kerframil: but emerge --sync doesn't update the eix cache, eix-sync does both :)
<19> so..should I just wait a bit?
<0> isn't xorg up to 7.1.0?
<19> like with all compiling :P, though I like to see progress of some kind
<5> Sakkath: which has no bearing on the problem he's describing.
<17> kerframil: I know
<5> zaggy_nl: yes, I'm afraid so
<17> kerframil: i also asked him to check to see if he's using a local mirror
<20> aaarrrhhh... how do I unmask softmac... can't get it to work :(
<3> Doing a cp -ax to mirror my current FS and then swithc drives. It seems to of finished, IO light stopped flashing and du shows I seem to have all data but ime not getting prompt back fron cp!
<5> Sakkath: that won't make any difference either - the process of updating the metadata cache is unrelated to the choice of mirror
<21> Hi, I've got a patch I'd like to apply to wine...how can I add it to the ebuild?
<22> i need to load the module agpgart but modprobe says module not found
<4> anyone using Plesk with either gentoo or gentoo-hardened ?
<17> kerframil: he hasn't replied yet on that one; nevermind that it usually just takes a long time, you should see how long he waited to determined that it "froze"
<17> Roeben: what is it masked by
<0> ok, this is my last question for a while... is there a way to have emerge download ALL the source files I need so that I could disconnect the laptop and take it with me to work while It builds offline?
<5> zaggy_nl: if you can't stand it then you have several choices: (1) wait for portage-2.1 to go stable (2) upgrade to portage-2.1_pre (3) there may still be a cache-backport patch for portage-2.0 going around (4) use a 3rd party cache implementation such as portage-cdb
<19> Sakkath, well, it's been 'frozen' for about 3 minutes now I think
<7> sess, emerge -f
<17> zaggy_nl: wait longer
<0> kojiro: you rock man, thanks
<8> zaggy_nl: Sometimes it gets stuck for 5 minutes or more here, and my system/HDD's aren't shabby.
<23> hola
<7> m0p, I don't think the problem is with the module or kernel... but that's about as far as I can get right now
<8> kojiro: ok
<17> Could someone answer my second question?
<8> kojiro: I'll try changing my routers IP and changing the gateway IP
<8> brb
<7> Sakkath, was that your third question? ;-)
<5> Sakkath: not at all. the issue of portage apparently freezing at the 51/52% mark when updating the metadata cache is widely known and has been done to death
<20> can somebody please give me the command to unmask net-wireless/ieee80211softmac-0.1-r20060105 masked by ~amd64 keyword
<17> kerframil: that was zaggy_nl's problem, not mine
<17> zaggy_nl: indeed, patience is the key
<24> kerframil: make my portage go faster! wah!
<5> Sakkath: it hasn't frozen but just performs very badly due to reasons I've already explained
<5> Sakkath: I know, but I'm responding to a comment you addresed to me :p
<7> Roeben, echo ~net-wireless/ieee80211softmac-0.1 >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
<17> kojiro: second; I wanted to know what i should do about php (dev-lang/php with mysql apache2 and cli use flags) it says to disable the berkdb useflag (which isn't enabled by me) or enable dba, which should I do?
<25> hello, could you tell me please what does the "ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY" message during emerge mean?
<5> Sakkath: I recommend you read the section about recommended USE flags (one moment while I dig it out)
<26> Guys need a lightweight xwindows manager to install whill i compile kde-meta etc just so i can get up and working fluxbox ? compile time RUFFLY on a athlon 2.4ghz XP with a gig of ram (download size came to 50 mb inc xorg)
<25> i recieved that message while updating quodlibet ...
<27> -DGMENU_I_KNOW_THIS_IS_UNSTABLE
<7> k31th, if you're totally unwilling to use twm...
<27> awesome
<7> k31th, how about ion3 /
<5> Sakkath: http://svn.gnqs.org/projects/gentoo-php-overlay/wiki/CommonQuestions <-- see the section about recommended USE flags
<17> o.o ok lol
<26> kojiro: twm ?
<12> andrew_p: it means it's trying to write to the real filesystem (/)
<28> is there anyway we can store files on disk so that find would not be able to search them?
<7> k31th, the default one that's already there...
<5> Sakkath: because of the abundance of flags supported by dev-lang/php it's generally easier to set a package.use entry in the form of: dev-lang/php -* <flags you want for php alone>
<7> k31th, super lightweight and somewhat crappy...
<29> k31th, use framebuffer _o_
<20> kojiro: that worked but it failed to compile :(
<26> lol.
<25> LinuxBlues: so the latest quodlibet update broke it?..
