<16> solv: compiled in modules -- faster bootup time, increaed kernal size. Depending on your computer, the kernel might get too big, in which case you have to use modules. This becomes an issue if your system is on say a SCSI disk which needs a certain module driver, but that module driver can't be accessed until it is loaded. Sometimes you use compiled in drivers for that but most of the time you'd use initrd
