<0> PhantmShado, sweet. maybe the wiki can tell me then. i hope so <1> meeseontheleese: next version up does. <2> hi guys I'm trying to use fbsplash <3> Exception received during 'installing additional packages'. EmergePackageError: FATAL : emerge : could not emerge gnome-base/gnome-panel2.12.2 <4> life as well as linux is a learning experience but you learn more with linux... GNU all the way babe! <5> z36ra:if the packages arent affecting you why do you care? systems will invariably have broken packages, no point in hunting them out constantly <3> so it's 80% done.....what do I do? Blast everything away and do it all over again? <2> and only with splash=verbose it works <2> with splash=silent...I have the default console :( why? <3> any idea? <5> Phocion: you didnt give the error... <6> anyone here using the masked version of vlc, and if so what version and is it stable enough for me to use it? <4> PhantmShado, gnome-system-monitor was complaining about libwnkl.. I just upgraded and want to find other broken packages. <1> meeseontheleese: never had any problems with it. <7> z36ra : tried revdep-rebuild? <8> z36ra: that'd be libwnck. you should use the revdep-rebuild tool
<6> goldfish ah good to know, Ill go unmask it then <4> just wondered if there was a way to find them <5> Phocion: you got an internet connection? <3> yup <3> sorry the computers at the other side of the room <4> k thanks d00des <3> trying to write it down <4> trying now <5> emerge --sync <9> Hello. Growisofs is for DVDs but can you use the same program on CDs? <5> Phocion:and then emerge gnome-base/gnome-panel2.12.2 <6> um ok, to unmask a package I put it in package.unmask and package.keywords right? <7> meeseontheleese : depends how it's masked <5> Phocion:should the package install right then, then you should be able to go right back to the package installation <3> ok thanks man lemme try <3> here's the error: <3> Function gnome2_src_compile, Line 48, Exitcode 2 Compile Failure <4> pfeilspitze, kerframil , see? THAT WAS EASY. les see if it works. this is a very slow machine but distcc helps. <0> if i have squashfs2.0 enabled in my kernel, how do i mount the livecd? <5> yeah bad source <3> bah <6> hmmmm <3> PhantmShado: I'm using stage1 with the Gentoo 2006 Install Wizard tho <5> stage1 is not the package <4> Ive seen that (revdep-rebuild) in the help pages... cant believe I havent tried it yet. <5> i must go, my apologies <3> so if i do the emerge commands in a terminal the install should kick start again? <4> later d00de <10> kadigibox: no, for the same functionality on CD, use mkisofs+cdrecord <1> meeseontheleese: for vlc, echo "media-video/vlc ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords (***uming you're on x86) <10> or a suitable frontend to those programs such as k3b <4> heck! I have all kinds of broken stuff. <6> goldfish yeah I fixed that, was just intrigued by the fact that it can be masked other ways <1> meeseontheleese: oh right, sorry :) <6> goldfish right now im emerging 0.8.4 but thanks <11> goldfish: Asus A3500E <9> I was just wondering if the growisofs was backwards compatible. Thanks shiznix for the info though <12> z36ra, I think I figured it out, I'm fairly sure now I accidentally grabbed a stage2 instead of a stage3 last time. <1> meeseontheleese: yeah , can be masked by package.mask , for example... <13> hey, guys, ok im a computer tech, recently i have been noticing that the cfdisk on the gentoo livecd doesnt work with the newer maxtor's/seagates/Western digitals....do any of you know why by any chance <13> works great with older hdds <14> if, say, i'm emerging over ssh and i'm afraid of losing wifi signal, how can i ensure that the emerge will continue if my ssh is killed? <15> does anybody know what is the menuconfig name for this CONFIG_MEGARAID_MAILBOX kernel config option?? <8> stephelton: by learning how to use screen <16> MagusX1, have you searched bugs.gentoo.org <13> no i havent because the cd works great or cfdisk works great for the older hdds <14> kerframil, screen automatically does that? i'm fluent with screen <13> but not the new ones <13> was wondering if you guys experienced the same thing <13> stephelton, you need to do an emerge -f "pakage name" <13> what that does is download the package <8> stephelton: screen sessions don't terminate simply because the terminal from which you attach to an instance is killed ;) <13> and after issue emerge package <11> goldfish: I'll really appreciate if you can help me with this... for 2 days I've been googling like crazy <8> stephelton: so yes, if you start the process in a screen you'll be fine <14> kerframil, ok thanks <17> how do i boot to my sparc machine vith cdrom? <11> goldfish: when I do iwconfig eth1 power on it gives Input/Output Error. <1> yeah. <18> deadcat: stop a OK << prponpt <1> iwconfig won't work if the radio is off.
<19> how does a livecd not work with certain hd's? <19> that's so vague <18> deadcat: boot cdrom <1> hawking: dmesg says the radio is off, yeah? <16> MagusX1, i only use fdisk... but if youj have access to alot of hardware or many systems youj can test and youjr certain of this file a bug <17> D1A: i didnt even get to a prompt. it just start booting from the hdd <4> wiz, try just ubtaring again. then edit make.conf. then sync and go from there. theres plentty of help on the website.... my humble opinion. <11> goldfish : it says Kill Switch is on and says that it must be turned off for wireless networking to work <17> D1A: how do i stop a OK prompt? <11> goldfish : radio frequency kill switch <17> D1A: sunblade100 here <13> ok will do, i have noticed this on the newer hdds, you know the ones that come with their own software to partition.....i dont know why linux cfdisk doesnt work...i will investigate further, thank you <1> hawking: ok. <18> deadcat: while its initializing memory or going through its boot routine hit the stop key and the letter a <17> ah <18> deadcat: if you have a sun keyboard that is <17> D1A: with the gentoo cd right? <17> ya <11> goldfish: any ideas how can i turn it off? <18> deadcat: yes before it actually boot from the default device <4> has anyone installed 2006 yet? from livecd? <20> hey what exactly does kobject_register failed for *** mean because I'm getting quite a few in dmesg <1> hawking: hmm, well are you sure there is nothing which mentions wireless in the bios? <21> cd /Downlodas <21> oh... <21> appearantly wrong window ^^ <21> and a typo as well :DD <1> Tab-completion. <17> D1A: thanks. love you man (= <22> yeah I'm laz <22> y <11> goldfish: yeah I looked everywhere <22> I get mad when my tab completion doesn't work <18> deadcat: if you have 4gb of ram it wont boot <17> D1A: 128MB (= <4> shiot... looks like I'm compiling for the night.... <18> deadcat: youll be fine then :) <4> thank god for distcc <4> thank the gentoo gods <6> im curious, after I emerge something, and say it goes stable, is there any chance thats a stable version of it? or is that when something its masked its just being tested, not changed? <4> hehe <23> hi all <24> Is there anyway to damage speakers using an application such as alasmixer to contol audio? My speakers on my laptop have a wierd B*** sound. Turning up PCM increases the wierd b*** sound. I cant hear audio clearly. Whe <23> can someone help me with my acx100 DWL 520+ wifi card? i have it up it just wont scan for a network <24> Is there anyway to damage speakers using an application such as alasmixer to contol audio? My speakers on my laptop have a wierd B*** sound. Turning up PCM increases the wierd b*** sound. I cant hear audio clearly. Decreasing PCM also decreases Volume so i can only decrease it but so much. Any suggestions? <0> (gentoo-wiki is currently down) Can anyone help me fully understand the Gentoo LiveCD bootup sequence, from kernel prompt to the mounting of the livecd's disc? <0> err, the wiki isn't down <0> scratch that, but it has no info that i could find <17> D1A: i get this when i boot cdrom: cannt open boot device, my boot device is /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@1,0:f <11> goldfish: here is what I get in dmesg when I press Fn+F2 http://rafb.net/paste/results/2I9WWX69.html <4> im gone... later d00des! <25> raccoontail: it boots a small system in the initrd, that copies the squash image to the ramdisk, mounts the cd etc.. <25> raccoontail: if you add debug to the the grub options it will stop in the initrd <25> grub kernel options* <0> wide-eye, i need to know precisely when it mounts the cd. that's where my problem is. Do I need to specify a manual device node for extra ide devices (raid card) using mknod if initrd does not have udev in it? (I'm making a custom livecd using initrd) <1> hawking: not sure man... you could try searching the forums, and maybe posting there.. sorry. <24> Is there anyway to damage speakers using an application such as alasmixer to contol audio? My speakers on my laptop have a wierd B*** sound. Turning up PCM increases the wierd b*** sound. I cant hear audio clearly. Decreasing PCM also decreases Volume so i can only decrease it but so much. Any suggestions? <0> the cdrom drive is located on a raid card unsupported by the universal iso's kernel. therefore i've made my own livecd with support for it, but the tutorial i'm following does not include udev in the initrd, so i have to manually mknod device nodes it says. I don't know how to insure that the cdrom will be active by the time the livecd tries to mount the disc <26> anyone have there graphing calculators working on linux? <25> raccoontail: if you do debug you get a shell that you can see, it stops just before mounting the disk <11> goldfish: allright .. I think I found smth useful called rfswitch <0> wide-eye, you mean ash? <0> (busybox) <1> hawking: cool, hope it works :) <11> goldfish: so do i <0> wide-eye, somehow i need to automate the creation of device nodes for /dev/hde through /dev/hdh so that they are present when the livecd attempts to mount itself. <25> raccoontail: yes in busybox, seen a sh shell too <17> D1A: ? <0> i've used busybox and i couln't do much with it, sinceu it just goes off of the initrd image <18> deadcat: yes ? <17> D1A: i think the problem is my cdrw )= <25> raccoontail: but that's where you need to be able to mount the disk so you can check if what you did worked...i was trying to boot via pxe the other day. <18> deadcat: why ? take it wont boot <25> raccoontail: so i dont know the answer for you, just some ideas
