<0> CVirus: if that is the case, rebuild it
<1> even amarok 1.4?
<2> TFKyle: no idea
<1> nvm, I misunderstood
<2> and how can I disable those noisy mouse over effects in my taskbar ?
<3> TFKyle: equery d libsdl returns nothing for me, what is it for then? ;]
<0> CVirus: it is an option in kicker's preferences, i forget the exact name but you will be able to find it with a bit of searching
<2> mark_alec: thanks
<4> hi - where is the kernel at right after compiling (and what is its name)?
<1> Peper: sdl is a library a lot of games use, its for drawing graphics/input/low-level sound output/etc.
<3> ohhh, http://www.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/media-libs/libsdl/ChangeLog
<5> is there a log of commits to the portage tree avilable somewhere?
<3> got fixed on 29. may
<0> tr|nn|: /usr/src/linux/i386/boot/bzImage iirc
<1> Peper: that should be fine, as you synced a day ago (and its the first of june)
<3> strange that i don't have it in my tree

<6> If you are manualy configuring the kernel, there is no need for initramfs correct? <---formally genkernel user
<0> djbeenie: yes, no need for one
<4> mark_alec: about 2 megabyte, can that be? sorry if noobie question
<6> thank you
<3> i will pause, sync and emerge the libsdl
<0> tr|nn|: that is about right
<3> i made i typo in equery d :] it is used by *MANY* apps
<4> mark_alec: ty
<6> damnit lol
<7> is an entropy pool basically i/o activity within the system?
<6> im getting kernel panic haha
<8> stark: random seeds more liek?
<9> stark: or a clock?
<10> djbeenie: if you compile everything you need to actually boot the system in the kernel (IDE drivers, fs drivers etc) then you shouldn't need an initramfs/initrd etc
<7> kojiro: so im not correct?
<11> umm i'm running 2.6.17, is iptables still the item of choice to manage networks, and if so WHERE in the kernel config is the ip_tables menu?
<8> hmm, i upgraded gcc+glibc minor versions
<7> hylje: so im wrong?
<9> stark: how about IRC for a frickin' awesome entropy pool?
<8> should i recompile everything?
<9> it's totally random ;-)
<8> kojiro: agree
<10> adante: under netfilter or something iirc
<1> adante: its with the netfilter stuff, somewhere in the network config
<8> kojiro: or 4ch /b/
<2> mark_alec: I'm re-emerging amarok ... Why should it compile against KDE 3.5 and not 3.4 ?
<1> meh, /b--
<7> kojiro: so its i/o activity correct?
<2> mark_alec: I mean .. how will it know
<1> now /t or /h, those are decent :P
<6> getting no partition found
<8> TFKyle: talking about randomness for entropy
<1> ah
<10> djbeenie: sounds like somethign may be amiss with either your IDE controller drivers or filesystem drivers
<1> /h is still completely random ;)
<11> thanks guys
<7> kojiro: so its i/o activity correct?
<0> CVirus: it will compile against 3.5 because when it is looking for which version to build against, it will find 3.5 first as it is earlier in $PATH than 3.4
<2> mark_alec: got that
<1> adante: btw, is .17 out yet or are you using an _rc?
<11> TFKyle: rc, i'm using mm-sources
<6> well luckly I can modify my grub back to genkernel haha
<1> genkernel, eww :D
<6> yeah yeah yeah...hey im a newbie
<6> learning this
<10> djbeenie: no excuse for using genkernel
<6> i need a good book
<9> stark: yes
<1> the handbook is a pretty good book
<6> i didnt know genkernel was bad first haha
<1> I guess it isn't "bad", I just prefer building my own kernels personally
<1> its not like its rocket science :)
<6> :)
<12> How many of you who are bashing genkernel have actually used it? I use it all the time, and there is nothing wrong with it, other than unexpected behavior if you don't know how to use it.
<13> DrChandra:I think it's cool for people who haven't played with a kernel before, but after your first compiles IMO you should do it by hand to "optimize" it. Isn't that what gentoo is all about?
<14> hoo rah ... who's a pro at disaster recovery?
<13> wyatt_earp:semper fi! define disaster
<14> disaster = our current presidency ... i kid, disaster is my root FS is gone
<14> I've rebuilt it
<14> however
<15> don't bring politics here.

<14> var was on a seperate disk
<15> and
<15> try
<15> putting more on one line
<16> I'm getting sys-apps/pam-login (is blocking sys-apps/shadow-4.0.15-r2), do I need both and if not which one can I get rid of??
<15> Johnny23|work: /topic!
<16> blackace: lol, sorry, thanks
<14> well, since var was on a sep disk, it had the old portage info ... can i just copy the new portage lib files over to my old var partion and run with it .... or will i mess it up huge?
<12> Korthrun: I did my first compiles by hand long before Gentoo even existed. I use genkernel because it's a reliable and repeatable process, unlike a series of manual steps. If doing things manually is the Gentoo way, why not advocate that everyone stop using emerge--sync, and instead rsync each update manually? Use what you want, but let's get past the genkernel fud.
<13> DrChandra: I agree about the FUD. and I didn't mean doing it by hand was the "gentoo way" but I feel there is a focus on optimization :)
<17> i mounted my ipod as root by doing "mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod", i am now running gtkpod as a regular user and want to write to the ipod but i get "Error opening '/mnt/ipod/Ipod_Control/Music/F15/gtkpod0234234.mp3' for writing (Permission denied)." ... how can i give my regular user permission to write?
<18> man fstab
<6> **** hahahaha i keep getting kernel panic now
<15> djbeenie: language.
<14> umask=000 in fstab
<6> sorry
<19> anyone here use links2? a or a graphical web browser in console without X? links2 when i go to run it has a segmentation fault ie 'links2 -g'
<12> Korthrun: I hand optimize my .config, and let genkernel build and install it the same way every time. I never let genkernel choose the config. That's the part where "know how to use it" comes into play. :)
<13> DrChandra:well put
<6> ok I have set my grub just like it was and now I am still getting kernel panic...why is that
<19> mm hang on i probly didnt enable teh use switch
<14> so .... old var on a seperate disk, rebuilt /, saved /var/lib/portage, remounted var ... is it safe to copy it to my old var/lib/portage or will i bugger things?
<1> djbeenie: a kernel panic sounds like a kernel option more than a grub problem to me
<1> er, problem
<6> even if my genkernel was working perfectly?
<12> djbeenie: genkernel doesn't do a good job at configuring your kernel. YOu need to know what the kernel config is, no matter what process you use to build and install it.
<20> hi! my ISP provides me with 1Gbt of foreign and 10Gbt of local traffic. also i've got hosting account allocated in my country with ssh access enabled. is it possible to redirect foreign traffic through this host so that ISP will treat it as local traffic?
<6> sigh..im lost lol
<4> what is the shortform for reiserfs in fstab?
<12> TFKyle: Maybe the keyboard has an entropy creation feature.
<9> TFKyle: don't swear! :-P
<4> ..if there is any
<10> tr|nn|: reiserfs from memory
<4> so no shortform
<9> DrChandra: it's called 'cat', and I don't mean the binary
<1> kojiro: I'll sear all I'd like, you *beep*ing *beep* of a *beep*
<1> *swear
<4> LSD` ty++
<21> LSD`, thanks man
<22> hi
<21> LSD`, it works now :-)
<21> LSD`, you in?
<22> would it matter if i include /usr/portage/ in a stage4 or not?
<1> Anima: probably, not sure if you can sync without a /usr/portage
<21> TFKyle, hehe I move mail now :-)
<1> cool
<12> Anima: The first thing that would happen is it would get updated anyway. The question will be how out of date would it be, because that would determine the size of the update. I'd say include it.
<20> my ISP provides me with 1Gbt of foreign and 10Gbt of local traffic. also i've got hosting account allocated in my country with ssh access enabled. is it possible to redirect foreign traffic through this host so that ISP will treat it as local traffic?
<21> TFKyle, what imapd did you say you use?
<8> hmm, portage insists on downgrading OpenTTD
<22> DrChandra, thx
<1> coolb: courier (though I've been thinking of trying dovecot or hula lately)
<8> even though it got a recent package in unstable, and i got it keyworded in /etc/portage/package.keywords
<1> and postfix as an MTA
<21> TFKyle, check out surgemail :-)
<12> Anima: YOu could clean out /usr/portage/distfiles if you want to save space.
<1> coolb: hmm, not in portage?
<21> TFKyle, http://netwinsite.com/surgemail/
<1> meh, think if I wanted something like that I'd use apache james
<12> hylje: Maybe something depends on a particular version of it. Check depends, and try re-emerging whatever depends on it while you have the new OpenTTD emerged.
<1> also, why the blogging in an email server?
<21> TFKyle, apache is a httpd not mail server
<8> DrChandra: hmm ill look into it
<1> coolb: I said apache james, apache is a company, not an httpd
<21> :-)
<1> er
<1> a software foundation rather
<12> hylje: Packages toggling back and forth between versions is a common problem. It's always solved by fixing the dependencies.
<1> coolb: http://james.apache.org/
<9> ...topic?
<12> TFKyle: Apache is an Indian!
<1> (I used to use it back when I used windows)
