<0> AutOPSY : hush
<1> Anvil, I accidentally hit caps lock.. haha.
<1> Sorry.
<2> would updating the kernel fix this?
<3> hey...anyone know anything about changing the boot screen loader?
<1> Valehru_Fedora, see the documentation for rhgb. If this is what you are talking about, see /usr/share/rhgb also.
<4> Valehru_Fedora: if, on the other hand, you mean the grub splash screen, see the grub documentation
<5> hi folks
<6> hola kblin
<4> hello
<5> what rfc defines foo+bar@baz.com type email addresses?
<1> RFC 822 looks like.
<1> RFC 2822.
<2> AutOPSY
<2> would updating the kernel fix this?
<1> I would update it anyways, but I do not think it is the problem, specifically.

<1> Have you tried DHCP, and did traceroute using -I and without -I make any difference in responses from the router's address?
<2> i'll /try/ that but I'm also attempting to redo my kernel
<2> what things don't I want for it being on a laptop?
<2> and whic hdo I do?
<1> Well, I think kernel compilation is a bit overdoing it for the problem at hand.
<2> it is something that needs to get done isn't it?
<1> Kernel updates are available in the Fedora Core updates repositories.
<2> well
<2> I've downloaded it
<2> 2.6.16
<1> ShadeS, that is a FC5 kernel.
<7> No, 2.6.16 has been released for FC4.
<6> lol
<1> Oh.. ok.
<2> argh
<1> This must have been recently, the last update I saw was an 2.6.15-1.1833 kernel for Core 4.
<8> hehe
<7> Indeed.
<9> Good morning everyone
<2> I downloaded the wrong kernel then?
<6> moning CyberSpy
<8> kernel-2.6.16-1.2069_FC4
<8> is the last one I see in teh updates
<9> lol
<6> biab
<2> Eusa, where do you see that
<8> http://alice.theplanet.net/pub/mirrors/download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/4/i386/kernel-2.6.16-1.2069_FC4.i686.rpm
<9> AutOPSY: I figured out why I couldn't boot from dvd yesterday (with that laptop) or read a dvd with the Linux partition. The firmware of the drive is "locked" (it's not region free) so it won't read +R's or RW's, I have to hack the firmware and open the drive and it will be fine.
<1> Crazy.
<9> WIndows, of course, can use it just fine
<9> That is crazyt
<8> ShadeS: I think I've managed to scoll back and scan over what's been going on, but I get the impression it's still not working?
<8> ShadeS: tg3 driver can be "interesting".
<2> Eusa, what do you mean?
<9> That sort of thing really irritates me, how they have such a hold on even hardware vendors, that only a certain OS can use such a standard piece of hardware that is essential
<9> I have a hacked firmware for it, but now I need to go get a USB floppy so I can boot to freeDOS and flash it.
<9> err external floppy even.
<2> how do I modify that .rpm's paramters?
<2> apparently it was just installed to my system
<2> the new kernel
<2> I get an error when I try to make menuconfig
<2> curses.h no such file
<2> is at the top of my list
<8> ShadeS: unless you have a specific need, you shouldn't really be trying to compile a new kernel, just installing the nwe ( binary.. i.e. already compiled ) one.
<8> nwe = new.. but sadly my typing is not doing too well today
<2> I can't get this nic to work
<2> that's all I want
<2> is for this nic to work
<2> the wirless one too
<8> Thankfully I long ago gave up on wirelss on linux :-)
<2> well
<8> what I meant by "interesting" was "often in the past, not very good, lots of bugs"
<9> Wireless isn't that bad, and it's definfitly imroving each day
<2> let me get the hardline anyway
<6> I did not I love the new bcm43xx support with FC5.
<9> Sonar_Guy: Which driver is that for?
<6> broadcom cards
<6> sorry broadcom chipset cards
<9> I'm going to be trying to get my Netgear WG111 working today (the usb dongle antenna)

<6> Cool
<9> I have a feeling it's going to be ndiswrapper and a long search for the driver
<6> hardest part of the bmc43xx was getting the fwcutter
<6> CyberSpy: if it works. lol
<9> lol
<9> Well, many people use this one
<9> so we'll see
<6> my wife has a new dlink card and even with ndiswrapper it causes the laptop to reboot when the driver loads, lol
<9> it would be nice though, if some of these vendors starting making their apps/drivers for *nix as well, like for scanning for nearby networks, and setting wep/wpa
<6> Works fine in window though. heheh
<9> rather than editing the config file
<9> manually
<6> Yes it would be very nice.
<9> kwlan is a good start
<9> but you need to have everything else working first
<9> But it's definitly improving each day (support)
<9> I did find a really cool wifi antenna that is amplified and working for Linux
<9> with instructions sent with it on how to set it up (Instructions for Fedora)
<6> yes it is, it would just be nice if the chip makers would just release the specs on the chips so developers could make the drivers.
<9> http://www.netgate.com/product_info.php?products_id=297 - scroll down to bottom a read "additional information"
<6> CyberSpy: my built in broadcom has awesome range, the antenna is wrapped around the display.
<9> comes with Fedora support, THAT is refreshing
<6> yep
<9> And they tell you all sorts of info about it
<10> Yum is VERY slow this am?? or just curvature of the earth this AM
<9> that's nice too
<9> Tells you the chipset, etc
<9> Like you were just saying
<9> I have one in Phila, and it's connected to an amp/pre-amp and a 15db gain antenna, it's amazing
<6> Yep that is the key thing, with out the spec the developer have to reverse engineer the drivers for linux or wrap the windows drivers which is not the best solution.
<9> But it does me no good down here in NC
<6> lol
<6> guycook: must be the curvature of the earth in your part of the world, running pretty quick here.
<10> Sonar_Gal, I stopped it and restarted over again. Trying to update samba is in the que of yumex
<10> oops, Sonar_Guy I meant
<6> Oh, yumex. That explains it!! hehe
<9> Hey, yumex is the one gtk app I like lol
<10> Sonar_Guy, I know, I know....
<9> the new version for fc5 is nice
<6> I use command line and it runs lickety split.
<10> Sonar_Guy, the gui is nice for us 'noobs' to have
<9> I like yumex when I am searching around or want to read what something is
<6> guycook: Not knocking it, but it is much slower than command line.
<10> yumex was handy too, I somehow when updating my kernel yesterday the open office was 'gone' from the taskbar, so I just looked it up and reinstalled it, and viola 116MB later it was back again
<6> lol
<10> Sonar_Guy, yes it might be slower, but not that often like today's slow
<6> CyberSpy: your right yumex is much quicker in FC5.
<10> restarted yumex, and now it's fast again, the earth has moved !
<6> lol
<8> using a differnt repos because you restarted maybe?
<10> Eusa, probably something like that,
<9> Sonar_Guy: You should have been around a bit more yesterday, I pulled my laziest move yet, you would have been laughing pretty good
<6> Yeah, what was that?
<10> running transaction, all is well.
<9> I hit the autostart for the car (with the remote), and ssh'd into the laptop to work on it, rather than walk 20 ft to the driveway and type on it
<6> lol, that is pretty lazy.
<10> I'm up early trying to figure out why the SMB on my desktop can't be 'seen' by my Evolution...
<10> for attaching statements to emails
<9> It was lazy, but a hint of "cool" factor
<10> update complete
<9> So I was thinking, you could do that too
<9> where you're at
<8> "up early"
<10> got a new audacity too
<9> just start it, or put in a second battery, and ssh to it outside
<10> I'm on the west coast of US, it's just past 4AM here, and I"ve been up an hour
<8> lunchtime.
<10> 'round here up at 3AM is 'up early' <grin>
<6> CyberSpy: our new van is so automated we just hit a button on the remote and the door opens. Now that is lazy.
<6> hehe
<9> That's what I was referring to
<8> hence why I'm not doing something more productive than sitting in IRC being "helpful"
<6> Next is the computer implementation to the entertainment system.
<9> You can autostart the vehicle, or use a second battery/solar panel for the laptop
