<0> shadowarts-mac, i'm trying to share a folder with a windows box, how do i do it
<1> Buzzin`: nope, it doesn't
<2> I am having weird printer problems. Win->FC4 works, but FC4->FC4 printouts get stuck.
<3> how do i remove xwindows?
<0> shadowarts-mac, i'm trying to share a folder with a windows box, how do i do it
<2> BodyRider, what version of windows?
<4> BodyRider: unforuntuately i dont have much expeirence there :(
<0> dsnyders, xp
<0> ok shadowarts-mac
<2> BodyRider, I don't have much experience there either, but let's take a stab at it.
<0> the other problem i have is that i can't play avi / wmv files on the linux box. i've done as the faq suggests and they stil dont play
<5> felipec, sorry
<0> lets try
<0> can't screw it up too bad - what's the worsdt that can happen - i have to rebuild - no biggy
<6> Ok, I KNOW this will be a stupidish, noobie-ish question but... when you do cvs stuff from the command line...where does it put the files you checkout?
<2> First of all, does the shared folder need to be on the linux box, or can it be on the windows box?

<0> it is currently on the linux box - i d/l some files and i want them available to windows
<0> it COULD be on either - but i want it on linux for now
<2> BodyRider, Fair enough. Are you familiar with scp?
<7> hello, has anyone tried to install 4core on a via epia M series mini itx board?
<0> the whole network will be linux b4 long so sharing will have to be learnt anyway
<0> scp ...... nope - only been using linux 5 days ish
<8> download winscp :)
<0> jaike, windows ? linux ?
<2> scp is a secure copy protocol. You could drop to a command prompt on windows and copy the files using winscp.
<7> hello, has anyone tried to install 4core on a via epia M series mini itx board?
<0> would rather be able to browse to the folder and view them across the network
<2> Not exactly sharing the folder, but you could get the files to the windows box that way.
<0> if thats possible
<8> samba..security=share is easiest to setup
<2> Ok. I thought that might be the case. I just threw the idea out as a possible solution.
<0> ahhh i heard of samba
<6> Anyone on my cvs issue?
<0> but where its hiding i dont know - i hope it has a gui
<2> BodyRider, Samba is the open source verision of windows' SMB file sharing protocol
<5> does anyone know what you enter in gmplayer to display the "slider bar" on the video?
<2> Bodyrider, http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/ is a good place to start.
<8> yup.it has a gui.install swat.enable it in xinetd. run browser and put in http://linux.ip.address:901
<8> make sure smb servce is up and running
<8> howtos arent very helpful for newbies sometimes...try looking for sample configs
<0> cant tell if smb is running :(
<8> service smb status
<8> i think you need to take a crash course in linux administration
<9> LAME
<0> i know jaike
<9> Linux administration made easy
<0> jaike, i gewt service command not recognised - i tried that one - i thort it was the command
<8> hmmm..you running fedora?
<0> fc4
<8> try /sbin/service smb status
<9> bodyrider, "su" is not the same as "su -l"
<0> isn't it - wots the diff MicroBob
<8> path
<9> bodyrider use "su -l" to become root, ask the man page whats the diff
<3> what is udevd?
<0> i thort they were the same
<10> gezick: the thing that manages the contents of /dev
<3> ah. just wondering why it was showing up at the top of top, using 0.3% of my processor
<9> bodyrider,tip #1 don't think, KNOW
<0> i know know they aren't MicroBob
<11> - and -l process the login files of the user you're switching to, giving you their environment (ie; their path) while su simply changes your effective user id.
<0> ok then smb is running
<8> can anyone recommend an antivirus for a linux share?
<11> clamav
<12> Whats the command to mount everything?
<12> mount -a?
<11> yes, everything in /etc/fstab
<8> thanks
<12> is it mount -a?
<12> Hello
<12> ?
<8> yes
<12> well i did that but its still not showing up do i need to relogin?
<0> whats the command to share a folder smb stylee
<12> Do i need to relogin for my mount settings to take place?
<6> Ok, I KNOW this will be a stupidish, noobie-ish question but... when you do cvs stuff from the command line...where does it put the files you checkout?
<12> home

<5> that is not noobieish compared to me
<12> /home/username
<13> hi, I'm trying to install the linux version of divx from divx.com and write a spec file for it. What rules should be followed when installing the includes? There seems to be a problem with the provided installer
<6> Buzzin`: I appreciate that but for me it is.
<6> Phoul: And it creates the same dir as the module checked out right? Or does it use /home/use/module/CVSROOT ?
<9> dahood, there are packages to provide the functionality in livna IIRC
<6> s/use/user
<13> the installer puts headers in /usr/include/common /usr/include/decoder /usr/include/encoder. Is it possible to put them in usr/include/{common,decoder,encoder} ?
<9> dahood, xvid I think
<13> MicroBob, yes I already have compiled xvid. These are for rawhide installation and livna has not got a repository that is synced with rawhide
<9> dahood, why not just rebuild the fc4 rpms?
<13> MicroBob, I have done so for most of the libraries. I wanted to use this particular codec. How should I install the includes?
<13> I meant before to put them in something like usr/include/divx/{common,decoder,encoder} . Sorry for the mistake
<14> Did anyone else have a problem with yum installing vlc from livna?
<14> (fc4, x86_64
<15> worked fine in i386 for me
<14> It installed all the modules to /usr/lib64/vlc, but then goes searching for them in /usr/lib/vlc.
<13> Which rule is followed when installing header files in /usr/include/ ? Is there supposed to be a directory with the same filename as the package?
<6> Can anyone tell me if cvs checkout creates the same dir as the module checked out? Or does it use /home/user/module/CVSROOT ?
<16> sup everyone
<9> shup mrrcparish
<9> ummm, sup
<16> microbob
<12> Hello im trying to mount my ntfs partition and i followed fedora faq then did mount -a and its still not working
<16> hey Phoul
<0> jaike, help pls
<17> Phoul, which is your NTFS partition?
<18> DanteAlighieri, O_o
<12> Pardon?
<17> hda2 hdb4 hdc1 what?
<12> hda1
<17> Run: mkdir /mnt/ntfs && mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/ntfs
<17> mount -a works by reading the fstab, if it isn't listed, it won't work.
<12> it should definitly be there
<12> Its on my boot loader
<9> or if the fstab is not 'correct'
<17> That doesn't matter.
<12> You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "ntfs".
<17> Your bootloader has nothing to do with fstab, except for Linux native partitions and filesystems.
<17> Phoul, run: mount -t ntfs -o remount,dmask=0222 /dev/hda1 /mnt/ntfs
<12> I still get the you do not have acces
<12> I could just su into it
<17> Phoul, see: man mount
<17> Look up fmask, and dmask.
<19> Anyone got experience with recovering a software raid array (raid 1) where the primary disk failed and has been replaced?
<8> the secondary still safe?
<9> Hi JEf, read for AC?
<9> ready
<19> hdc is fine (it's a practice run for a customer's machine) but hda was replaced.
<19> Bootloader is grub.
<19> I'm finding plenty of "how-tos" based on lilo but nothing on grub.
<20> Can someone tell me where I can find a good intro/howto to dns?
<19> Honestly I'm looking for more of a pointer to a "how-to" than step by step directions via IRC.
<20> Most of the howto's I've come across are beyond me...
<20> or an ebook or something
<19> ShastaMoon - What's the issue you're having trouble with?
<19> DNS itself isn't trivial.
<17> jadrifter, http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html
<20> jadrifter It's not an issue...I just don't know how I can set up a home dns server so I can type names instead of IP's
<17> ShastaMaroon, you don't need a DNS server, use /etc/hosts for local machines.
<8> jadrifter: found out that RAID doesnt properly copy boot records
<8> you have to do several grub commands
<19> exactly jaike.
<19> Just found one letter in the fedora archives. Thought I'd try that.
<17> jadrifter, usually the bootloader code + partition table (if any) is in teh first 512 bytes of a disk.
<19> Okay. I've seen some how-tos based on copying the mbr.
<17> Is that what you need?
<2> I am having weird printer problems. Win->FC4 works, but FC4->FC4 printouts get stuck.
<8> when youve fixed mbr..just create partitions on the new disk exactly like the orig disk
<8> and use mdadm to add
<20> AutOPSY Would I need to set up each /etc/hosts individually?
<17> ShastaMaroon, yeah, for each machine you have.
<20> hmm....ok, thanks
