john: I have a black screen for analog 1 cannot display video how do I clear this screen and return it to normal
<0> *r* <1> stylish, there has been a discussion going on lately about what boot splash thingie should be used on one of the fedora mailinglists. <0> i think he just followed the bootsplash how to that is all and made a nice rpm for all of us to use! <1> neddiemaster, its more a collection of things one could try if hes adventurous atm. <1> neddiemaster, due to the lack of src rpms e.g. :) <2> Could you guys at least tell me what does the automatic mounting, is it KDE or something else? <0> he he <3> it could be more combined then the gensplash port. it needs a professional administation <4> OK I'm trying to install XGL to do that I need to compile X I've cvs checked it out but it's complaining it's missing a header file. <1> stylish, well again... put up src rpms... post your results to the mailinglist with the pointer that one might wanna look at it... and that it "worked for you" <1> stylish, maybe people step up. <1> stylish, also i know that some parts of the gensplash stuff also works without kernel patching. <1> stylish, so the parts working without patched kernel could go to fedora extras <3> che : theres a link in that README for the patchset and sources <5> where can I get fc4 help? is this channel only fc5 now? <3> haha
<3> ask <6> Back <5> yum question: what do I do if I want to install a version of software that is newer than is available in the yum repositories? <5> specifically, firefox1.5 on fc4 <5> firefox1.0 installed using yum. <7> Hi RizeNine : Well my problem didn't solve <7> RizeNine: X on restarting with new configuration printed an error on the console <6> wahjava, ok <3> zobi1 : man yum <6> wahjava, what's the error? <7> (1024x768@60,Monitor0) mode clock 65MHz exceeds DDC maximum 60MHz <8> does fedora core 5 use plug and play for installation of drivers and such? <8> i.e <9> So if "top" shows that you're getting into the swapfile, that means you need more RAM right? <8> stick a card in, and it's installed <10> I'd like to have xload installed on my FC4 system, currently use it on RH9 -- what yum package does it live in? <7> well, my monitor supports 1024x768 @ 60 Hz refresh rate <7> I think probably what I need is a proper modeline for Xorg.conf which I can place in xorg.conf with "i810" driver set <7> I've tried xtiming (xtiming.sf.net) but that didn't work either <7> same problem except "64.56Mhz" instead of "65Mhz" <6> wahjava, If I'm remembering correctly you need to find the proper HorizSync, and VertRefresh that both your monitor and video card support and put them in xorg.config <6> wahjava, then use the highest res that your card will allow at that HorizSync, and VertRefresh. <7> RizeNine: my monitor HorizSync and VertRefresh I got from the monitor's webpage and placed it too but nothnig changed <6> wahjava, does that make sense? <7> as X's detected values are little bit inaccurate <6> wahjava, ya, but that doesn't mean your card will handle it. <7> Well my card supports 800x600 @ 85 Hz and 1024x768 @ 60 Hz <7> s/card/monitor <6> wahjava, so what are the HorizSync and VertRefresh? <7> RizeNine: The problem is I get proper display in "vesa" driver mode not in "i810" driver mode <6> wahjava, for example mine had to be changed on this laptop. <7> RizeNine: u mean new <6> wahjava, new? <7> RizeNine: HorizSync 30.0-54.0 and VertRefresh - 50.0-120.0 <6> wahjava, did you set those? <11> hi all <7> new - the recent one auto-detected by Xorg via -configure <12> guys i need help with my installatino again <11> what package on fedora contains http://packages.debian.org/testing/source/libdwarf ? <12> i'm on the step of "start install process, this may take several minutes" , and it's been more than 30 mins! <7> yup <13> could any one recomend a good hex editor? <6> wahjava, where did you find those setting? <13> or a hex editor at all? <7> RizeNine: I told u earlier my actual ones and DDC probed one's are a bit inaccurate <12> any ideas? <7> RizeNine: from my monitors's webpage ? <6> wahjava, oh. <7> RizeNine: Do a Google for "LG StudioWorks 452V" ? <12> anyone? <6> wahjava, maybe comment out Option "dpms" then. <7> BB|AtHome: emacs with hexl-mode <13> erm <13> i was more looking for something that wasnt hard to use :) <10> Ah, the answer to my question appears to be xorg-x11-apps. <7> RizeNine: nothing changed <14> BB|AtHome: You could try khexedit, which I think is part of kdeutils <12> so no one knows what the problem is??? <7> RizeNine: Do u know any utility provided by X which can retrieve the active modeline ? <14> geren: Not enough information to help, sorry <10> geren: Sorry, no idea. I'm new to this channel myself.
<12> stickster, the installation is stuck on "starting install process, this may take several minutes" <6> wahjava, xvidtune <6> wahjava, maybe <14> geren: You said that already :-) <12> stickster what more do u want to know <7> RizeNine: done xvidtune -show <6> wahjava, k <7> RizeNine: While my X says it's running in 1024x768 ? <7> RizeNine: xvidtune outputs: <14> Could be you have a low amount of RAM, which causes more swapping to disk. Could be you are doing an upgrade of a system that has a lot of unknown (third-party) packages installed. Could be many things. I would recommend letting the installation run overnight if you haven't tried that already. <7> RizeNine: "800x600" 56.30 800 832 896 1048 600 601 604 631 +hsync +vsync <13> stickster, thanks this works exactly like i wanted :) <14> BB|AtHome: Great, glad I could help you :-) <7> RizeNine: Now I can do one thing, start my XServer in "vesa" driver in 1024x768 mode and then do this xvidtune <14> Now if someone would only give ghex some love :-( <6> wahjava, k <15> nyq: you ever come up with anything wrt synergy? <6> wahjava, do you have ddcprobe on your pc? <15> I'm drawing a blank still including figuring out how to turn off KDE accessibility tools <10> Aha! It's xorg-x11-tools! <8> I get this "black screen" when I'm trying to install Fedora Core 5. 1: Analog Input - Cannot Display This Video Mode. any ideas? <12> i am using a netowrk install <12> is that normal <14> geren: Is the server on your LAN, or over the Internet? <7> RizeNine: yippeee!! it worked <6> wahjava, what? <7> RizeNine: The problem is that DDC probe was failing. And <12> stickster, internet <12> stickster: ftp://eagle.roysdon.net/pub/fedora/linux/core/5/i386/os/ <7> RizeNine: since X gives u option to configure mode manually providing some timing <7> RizeNine: so what I did, I started X in "vesa" mode, ran xvidtune -show <7> RizeNine: and then got the modeline, copied that modeline into xorg.conf and changed back to "i810" <6> wahjava, k <7> RizeNine: Now restarted X and it worked.... <14> geren: You're going to be subject to whatever lag is normal, along with any of the other drag factors I already mentioned... and now the added drag from miscreants who are all going to hit the URL you just posted ;-) <7> RizeNine: thanks to u ;-) <6> wahjava, and it's using i810? <7> RizeNine: yup <6> wahjava, lsmod? <7> RizeNine: and xdriinfo prints something too <6> wahjava, cool <8> I get this "black screen" when I'm trying to install Fedora Core 5. 1: Analog Input - Cannot Display This Video Mode. any ideas? <7> RizeNine: I already have i915 inserted into kernel mode <6> wahjava, make keep tweaking to get it perfect some day. <12> stickster, ok but 30 mins for "starting install process" ? <12> what does starting install process even do? <14> geren: You can ask on anaconda-list... is there a #anaconda on IRC? <7> RizeNine: Thanks goes to u, people like u are just gr8 <14> Apparently there is :-) <6> wahjava, thanks tony. <7> RizeNine: who's tony <12> no one is active there <6> wahjava, the tiger. <6> wahjava, frosted flaks. <6> wahjava, gr8!!!!!! <6> wahjava, I have kids. <6> wahjava, it happens when you get older. <16> can anyone point me to information about precompiling a binary from c for distribution? <17> RizeNine, unless you choose not to follow the selfish gene. <18> Fedora Core uses rpmbuild. <16> Well, I need to run an app on a server where I can't use a compiler. <18> fires, there are many documents on building packages for Fedora Core. <6> wahjava, might look here as well http://www.linux.com/howtos/i810-HOWTO/x26.shtml#AEN192 <19> after install mysql "yum install mysql" , how can I start mysql? there is no /etc/init.d/mysqld <20> hey guys, what are fedora users using to scan wireless networks for SSIDs ? A friend of mine suggested kismet, but I'm having trouble building the src rpms on dag.wieers.com <6> wuming, you really should read the doc on your version of mysql. Plus there could be some config tools to help. <21> this could be a stupid question, but is there a way i can pipe a dd of a device into a compressed tarball? e.g. tar zcvf /home/win.tar.gz and put dd if=/dev/sda1 in there <21> i know i could do it as two commands, make it into a file then tar it <17> Grinnz, tarballs ball-up more than one file. since you've got one, just zip it <6> Grinnz, can't tar use dev in it's commands? <22> I would like to see some arguments for Fedora VS Ubuntu. Any links? <14> Eroick: GIYF <22> stickster: huh? <14> Google Is Your Friend :-)
