<0> can i not download the rpm and then install via rpm -i?
<1> why, when yum will do both for you?
<2> Yes, you can, but yum will take care of dependencies, if any...
<0> Fiver: thats if i can find it with yum and enter the name correctly
<1> that's what yum search is for
<3> what do I need to set so that root can't ssh into the box? I *think* it was a ssh.allow filename but I can't remember what it was actually called.
<0> Fiver: the only two i get when i do the yum searh ntfs is testdisk.x86_64
<4> knighthawk: /etc/ssh/sshd_config
<3> fedorared, thanks
<1> sivik: http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc4/#ntfs
<5> sivik, rpm -q livna-release
<0> Southern_Gentlem, not installed

<0> Fiver, that didn't work
<1> sivik: be more specific
<0> No Match for argument: kernel-module-ntfs-2.6.16-1.2108_FC4
<0> i'm just goin to find the rpm from rpmfind.net and install it
<6> if i do a text installation.. would X work after that?
<2> If you install X and Gnome or KDE, yes
<2> startx is the command you will need
<4> anigma: if you install X you get X regardless of graphical installer or not.
<6> ok
<6> but what if i get an error when im trying to start anaconda.. something like Cannot Display This Video Mode..
<6> could i then do a text-based installation, and still get X to work?
<4> anigma: you can install X from graphical mode. whether it will start or not is another matter.
<4> anigma: I mean text mode.
<2> anigma, yes.. When you do a text installation you get to choose which applications you are going to install. If you choose to select X, it will run. Even if you used text installation...
<6> fedorared: what if i then get the same error? is there a way i can configure X?
<6> after i've installed X and its not working
<4> anigma: yes you can edit xorg.conf in text mode to try to get it to work.
<6> whats the location of the file?
<7> anigma: depends on what the problem is. For all you know an available update fixes your problem.. or you may need a proprietary driver... difficult for anyone to tell you unless they have the same hardware as you and experienced the same problem at install time
<2> /etc/X11 if i remember correctly
<7> heishiro: if he doesnt know where the conf file is... i doubt he'll know enough to correctly workaround his video issue on his own.. so i dont see the point in telling him where the file is
<7> heishiro: you are giving him just enough rope to hang himself by randomly editting the configuration file..making things worse
<6> i have done it with freebsd..
<6> quite the same thing..
<2> Sorry then, |Jef|
<7> anigma: your level of questioning does not suggest you have
<7> anigma: until you understand the problem.. how can you know how to reconfigure?
<8> hello all
<9> hey!
<6> i had this problem with freebsd.. then some guy told me to configure the xorg.conf file.. gave me some links on how to do so.
<8> did any one know why in all modern like centos fedora rhcel4 nano have strang thing when i go down this is something strang happen in file viwe
<6> im not saying i know how to fix this, but i'll try,
<7> my007ms: that was unintelligable
<8> is there is solutian
<8> |Jef|, you note what i speek abut
<4> my007ms: we have no idea what the problem is. nano? file viewer? what's wrong with them?
<7> fedorared: nano... file view.... something strange
<2> I think a keyboard issue
<7> fedorared: i guess he means the file selection view inside nano

<10> is there any way to use 'yum' to update my system in sessions.. as in, a couple of files at a time, instead of having it download ALL the updates in one go?
<7> fedorared: as in Ctrl-R then Ctrl-T
<4> AsadR: yum update package1 package2
<10> I have serious bandwidth throughput/stability issues
<2> yum update package
<8> fedorared, |Jef| so this is not in my linux only is that with all
<10> but i want it to update all the ones on my system.. i'll have to manually type 'em all out one by one?
<7> AsadR: yum list updates to make a list of available updates
<10> k, i guess i could make a list out of it and use xargs to make it do it one by one
<7> AsadR: then yum update package1 package2 package3 ... packageN to update those N packages and their deps
<4> AsadR: yum update It caches them so it doesn't have to redownload if it aborts.
<7> AsadR: hold up a second...
<10> any way to reduce the inital time yum takes to supposedly "setup" the repositories? a cache or something?
<7> AsadR: yum makecache
<11> is it ok to ask noobie questions in here?
<1> di1: only if you're a noobie ;)
<12> heh
<2> dil if they are fedora related, yes
<11> lol, thanx.
<7> AsadR: look at the scripts in http://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Tools/yum and see if they do what you want...
<11> I am a noobie and it is fedora core 5
<10> ok, thanks |Jef| and fedorared :)
<7> AsadR: simple for loop bash scripts
<10> i'll look 'em up
<13> Hi. I tried to yum groupinstall "Development Tools" and like, almost every mirror returned [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum. The computer I'm doing it on is connected to cogent directly through a leased line, so it's not an ISP proxy (I think) delivering me cached stuff... What could be causing this?
<4> uru: out of sync mirrors.
<13> It eventually worked, but that was after going through like 30 mirrors or something.
<4> uru: about all you can do is yum clean metadata redownload the silly stuff.
<11> in bash - typing "set" results in lots of illegible data. is this normal?
<4> di1: those are environment variables.
<11> fed; when logged in as normal user it displays normal stuff but when i su it looks starnge
<4> di1: I recommend always using "su --login" to really login as root.
<1> or "su -"
<4> su --login is more descriptive of what it actually does.
<11> ok, let me try that. I think the strange text is something corupt.
<11> quite a few commands done work
<4> di1: how strange is it?
<11> like fdisk
<11> let me paste some
<4> di1: to http://rafb.net/paste/ please.
<1> di1: are you at the console or connecting remotely via ssh?
<4> di1: fdisk isn't working because $PATH doesn't set properly with out "su --login"
<8> the gnom work for all user exapt root any idea
<10> is the yum configuration given on fedorafaq.org generally trusted and supposed to work?
<11> oh, cool
<4> my007ms: I don't see that as I problem as I don't login to Gnome as root.
<11> I have just noticed it only has crazy stuff when logged via ssh
<4> AsadR: yes.
<1> di1: what ssh client software are you using?
<11> putty
<11> on win xp
<8> when user change something in task panel where this change save i think this will solve my probem
<1> same thing I use..
<13> Can someone point me to a guide on setting up yum to use one repository? Like kernel.org or something so I can download at 8 megs a second :|
