<0> on disk.
<1> what is the maximum number of swap partitions you can have?
<2> Why have more than one?
<0> performance.
<3> daMaestro, but it is not suitable for flash stiks.. right???
<0> how much space do you have to work with?
<3> say 128MB only ;)
<0> are you trying to have a running linux on a flash disk? or just an installer?
<3> running linux
<0> i don't think Fedora will do that
<0> you need something like gentoo
<3> i did it with Austrumi(Slackware derivative)
<4> why not live with a live-cd?
<3> fit within 50MB
<0> you could _maybe_ build a kickstart to get that small
<3> if i use gentoo then FC compatibility will not be there

<0> but there are some pretty wild dependancies in FC
<3> yes... which i hate but...
<5> why do you need FC compatibility?
<6> nedd /etc/fstab be manually updated if i connect and manual mount a usb-storage.. or can the /etc/fstab file automaticly be created with the mounted devices?
<3> cause all other PC have either RH or FC installed.
<0> linux is linux
<3> dont like odd man in the setup
<0> if it wasn't 4:30 am i would build a VM machine and see how much I could tear it down... what do you need running?
<3> yes i agree but due to some stupid reason my bosses asked me to do it
<5> http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
<5> well
<5> what do you need it to do?
<3> daMaestro, it should have a small windo manager like icewm, Firefox, some small games, vi, mc, abiwords and such things
<0> in 128M?
<5> lol
<7> anakronisme, people tend to choose distros they have friends who can help with. Ubuntu is like Debian, Fedora is like Redhat. I chose Fedora as I'd been used to rpm distros and managed RH servers in my lab. Some of my friends have Fedora and I help them, some have Debian and help themselves.
<5> firefox is about 12mb iirc
<3> Jeewhizz, austrumi is even better than DSL
<0> yeah.. you don't have room for Xorg.
<5> agree with RockClimber there - that's why i use FC/RHEL
<5> you might be able to use flux - i think that's quite a small GUI
<5> but xorg is quite big
<0> i use flux
<0> it uses xorg
<0> IIRC
<3> yes i put fire fox, abi word, GV, xpdf gimage view ... in 42MB to be very specific
<7> you can't cut FC down and still have it FC compatible. The rpms have too many dependencies.
<3> is there any way round...
<7> If you really want FC compatibile, do as really basic (no X) install
<7> then the base is FC compatible (ie you could use a local mirror of the update rpms to update all your machines, instead of N times the downloads)
<3> if it wont have X then the Clercks cant use it... ;)
<0> blueHole, it sounds like you need to build a 'dumb terminal'
<7> then give them the full FC
<7> how small is their harddrive?
<6> somebody any idea?
<4> rockclimber: i see. i'll just try out a couple of different distros then. its kind of hard to tell which one suits me the best without being connected to the internet, i've established. without the package managers things get a little stale
<3> daMaestro, yes something similar Thinclient based on FC
<7> noaXess, sorry no. Were you using the *same* USB port
<6> RockClimber: yes.. i do..
<0> blueHole, i don't see it working with FC... you would have to build a dumb terminal of some sort..
<7> anakronisme, try ubuntu, FC and Suse. Once you choose which of those you like you can refine you preference
<4> rockclimber: seems to be a wise tip. i like ubuntu because the community seems so god-awful NICE
<7> blueHole, what about this PC makes it unsuitable for just a plain install of fedora
<0> it is on an usbstick... only 128M
<7> anakronisme, it does come from the Isle of Mann though and they're a bit odd.
<3> well the management doesnt want them use the whole thing
<4> RockClimber: haha, I imagine so.
<7> To run from a USB stick you want a distro with jjfs2 (somethign like that)
<3> true
<3> actually i customised austrumi, PXES, puppy linux, DSL
<8> hey guys im building a server it has 2 nics one goes to the net eth0=net eth1=lan (or hub) how do i set this up on setup ?
<0> blueHole, how much RAM will you have?
<3> but Austruimi was great and it came up with a nice desktop
<3> 256MB of RAM
<0> i doubt you could even get a PXE image rocking
<0> FC based..
<3> well PXE image can do but the size is the constraint.
<3> PXE is meant for small boot file sizes
<0> yeah.. i mean.. load Xorg, fluxbox and related utils.. i doubt you could do it with the 128M stick and using all that 256M of RAM
<0> do you have a vncserver that it could connect to>?
<3> even i was thinking of LTSP kind of thing

<3> no VNC is availble i think...
<6> aha... does fstab-sync reserve a device eg. /dev/sdd ? no i have reconnected the usb-storage and its back to /dev/sdd ?!
<3> why??
<6> .. now i have ...
<3> daMaestro, would you like to talk in PM mode???
<0> blueHole, it could be possbile to load up a vnc client using the PXE images and make it under your limits
<0> no DCC.. i will /msg
<9> ifconfig doesnt work on my computer with Fedora core
<9> i wanted to find my IP address
<9> what can be the problem?
<7> "/sbin/ifconfig"
<0> Bat|outside, it is most likely your path
<0> as i said in the other channel
<9> sorry i was disconnected in the other channel :|
<9> ill try that RockClimber
<9> still doesnt work. where should I be?
<0> Bat|outside, run: 'whereis ifconfig'
<9> kk
<6> Bat|outside: do a /etc/init.d/network status
<9> whereis gives me a path
<9> to a ifconfig.8.gz
<9> but when I arrive at that place and type type "ifconfig.8.gz"
<10> What are the solid alternatives to ISA 2004 from MS, that can do all what it can do ?
<11> i want to disable sendmail on my home system, but i still want to get the output of logwatch on a daily basis. How can i do this?
<9> "Bad Command"
<9> daMaestro: it says "bad command"
<0> Bat|outside, 'man ifconfig'
<12> Hi Guys.. I'm after some suggestions on how to setup a Mail scenario within an office. The office currently uses an offsite SMTP / POP server for email and what i'm trying to do is setup a local mail server so that mail for each person within the same office does not need to go offsite each time. However I still want the primary mail server for all external messages and what not to exist. How can this be done?
<12> I was thinking about sending email out from the local mail server and in the office and using fetchmail to retrieve email from the main server..... but if i can avoid fetchmail this would be ideal...
<6> Bat|outside: you're now on that machin with ifconfig problem?
<9> no
<9> its another pc
<6> ok..
<6> wait...
<6> canyou ping from the bad machine to another?
<9> nope
<9> cant ping
<9> server cant find it
<6> is networking installed?
<9> how do I know if its installed? :?
<13> Hi! Can someone tell me how I can actually set the VideoCard to use the Livna drivers after I have installed the rpm? Thanks!
<13> I keep getting "Out of Range" on my monitor when I set it to nVidia Geforce 6600
<14> walla: you just have to change driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
<13> In the xorg.conf file it says Driver "nv" , not sure thats the correct one
<14> walla: yes, change it to nvidia
<13> l_chater: ok, you know what the driver is called?
<15> walla--: nvidia
<0> walla--, do you have two monitors?
<13> daMaestro: nope, only one
<0> http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/T0m4IO95.html <- dual
<0> http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/5hvCtm78.html <- single
<0> I have that same card.
<0> so those should work well
<0> that single has the TV out disabled too
<15> out of sync is a monitor problem not video card IMO
<0> it is my gamer config
<0> i just saw the nvidia geforce 6600.. that is what I rock.. so i think those configs might help
<15> walla--: is your display set properly? Ir is an LCD?
<0> yeah.. that is for CRTs
<13> EvilBob: its and lcd 19"
<0> you will need to customize the Section "Monitor"
<0> the device section should be correct for your card
<15> walla--: you may find that your card is deafulting to 75hz and your LCD max is 60Hz
<13> EvilBob: yeah it says out of range 74.8hz or something
<15> daMaestro: we have been seeing this a lot in the last few days
<0> yeah.. i had soooo many issues with the livna builds for the nvidia drivers.. i had to switch to compiling my own for a while
<0> glxinfo was crashing Xorg.. and other strange things.
<15> walla--: let me grep my logs for a solution
<0> i've been off beating quake4
<15> walla--: please file a bug in livna's Bugzila
<16> Hallowed are the Bobmen.
<13> Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" and Option "MetaModes" "1024x768;" do I change those to LCD and 1280x1024 daMaestro?
<0> no..
<15> walla--: run "system-config-display --reconfig"
