<0> Hey guys where is the best place to start to learn howto setup a linux (Debian) DNS server, so I can host my own domain i purchased, setup subdomains etc? <0> just for practice but wher eis the best place to read? <1> THat would depend on what DNS Server you were planning on using <2> mindbob: web site in the topic. <3> I've spent hours reading the BIND docs and howtos, but I can't find this one:
<3> How can I make bind resolve just a machine name (without dots) to an address? so i can use > ping machinename <3> ? <4> that's not bind's job <3> how can it be done? <3> without editing all hosts files on every machine <4> add a search domain to the machines <3> ok <3> thanks <4> you're welcome <4> oh. he left. <5> dnsreport says that my nameserver has no A record. But it DOES have an A record :-/ ... ? <1> babo, what domain? <2> dnsreport is often wrong about glue. <1> the domain may make things a little easier however :) <6> hi, I have a few noob questions, someone willing to help? (note that i'm a irc noob, too) <6> well I'll just give it a try:
<7> just ask <6> I try to find out how to set up a dedicated webserver; I got Suse Linux 10.1 running and have set up apache 2. i have set up two virtual hosts an can view both test pages via browser locally. Now I wish to take it a step further and be able to view the pages from another pc in the local network. At the moment this doesn't work and I ***ume its a DNS problem. I've tried to find howtos but I just don't know where to begin. Perhaps someone can give <7> quck fix=edit each hosts file on client pcs, or set up dns nameservers properly <6> well if i did so, what would I put into the hosts file? ***ume the webservers name is webserver and has the local IP 192.168.13.28; within Apache I have 2 namebased virtual hosts www.a.test and www.b.test <6> well ok, i found out already <6> but I have another question. ***ume I am going to hire a dedicated server somewhere and put my pages there. what would i have to do to make my pages public? Would I need to set up a dns server on my webserver? <8> it doesn't have to be on the webserver, but a dns server somewhere needs to answer queries for the domains you intend to use. <6> well thats obvious ;-) but how would this be done? would this be a dns server hosted by the provider i hire the webserver from? <8> it could be. <8> is it me, or has ns2.afraid.org become seriously broken? <7> ns2 and ns3 are dead <7> I find http://www.squish.net/dnscheck/ is good for that sort of check <9> I just had a brief question, I've noticed something kind of odd a few times in the past and I never had time to try and figure out why it happens. Say you have a customer on your mail server, and the dns and everything is pointed at your mail server (mx records, an A record, etc) they're getting mail, everything works fine. Then they switch to another hosting company, they move their DNS away, move their email away. none of the mx records, or A records <10> can anyone tell me if I there is a way to reject all traffic from a particular IP or domain? <7> Cyberai, I have seen a method using apache using mod_rewrite, here's 1 way http://www.perlcode.org/tutorials/apache/attacks.html <2> Cyberai: do you have a firewall? <10> yes, I'm actually interested in doing it there <10> I'm looking at iptables now :)
