<0> delox99: ce n'est pas une voiture
<0> nevyn: can't; i'm in software engineering course
<1> Gnea: I was just telling you so you could stop beating a that dead horse
<0> nevyn: hence why i didn't list that as a choice
<2> nvz: i realize that, i stopped awhile ago - i was just trying to be objective
<0> nevyn: besides i have interviews and they ask you such **** even if they don't expect you'll use it
<3> I did use umbrello for a while.
<3> code generation is evil.
<3> or can be.
<4> anyone know how I can install ALSA on my system? OSS runs fine, ALSA doesnt. I'm running a new system with an nForce 410 chipset
<0> nevyn: and "gaphor - UML modeling tool"
<5> hi, which release of debian should i use best? kanotix?
<3> it depends if you have a tutor who climbed up suns *** then autogenerating accessors is useful.
<6> nvz: what do you develop for? java phones?
<7> ubuntu
<7> kanotix

<7> knoppix
<3> mier85: kanotix is not a release of debian
<2> mier85: kanotix isn't a release, it's a based-on distro
<2> !based on debian
<8> Knoppix, Libranet, Corel/Xandros, Stormix, Progeny, Linspire, DamnSmallLinux, Ubuntu, Kurumin, Agnula, Xebian, and so on are *not* Debian. Just because something's "based on" Debian doesn't mean we can support it. You'll maybe get a Debian answer, and if it doesn't work, you're out of luck. Your best option is to join the channel for your distro.
<1> JohnCC: I dont develop for anything
<5> thanks ~
<7> actually gnea, kanotix uses debian repos
<5> can you tell me how to get a filtered package list with apt?
<0> nevyn: it's a design course i won't be needing code generation
<6> nvz: ahh, sorry... there was a comment you made some time back about j2me...
<1> JohnCC: I ordered some books on Java Servlets and J2ME programmiong I am thinking about making some things for my phone.. and if I get the hang of it I may jump on the bandwagon
<0> nevyn: besides it's usu. more useful in reverse for making a live design doc revision from real software
<2> owner: it does?
<9> I have a problem I cant install bluez-utils cause apt its going to remove many packages, is this a bug? or what am I suppose to use for bluetooth connecticity ?? Plz help.. :(
<6> nzv: gotcha, cool...
<1> JohnCC: I am looking towardfs networking apps, so I could seell the apps and the service
<10> mier85: what are you trying to do?
<5> i want to get all available packages with scim in the package name ~
<11> !seen
<6> nvz: what sort of other development have you done?
<10> /msg dpkg search and read
<10> or use tools like grep-dctrl and/or dpkg-awk
<5> jm_: thank you
<12> wow wikipedia taking steps in banning ips from govt officials
<1> JohnCC: I've just had a mild interest all my life.. I started out with all things BASIC when I was a pre-teenager using Apple II, TI-Basic, and various MS basic's then I learned linux and got intop shell, python, and a little perl. I dont focus too well.. so it helps to work with small projectsd or to use a very limited language where I can learn all the functions entirely and then make everything else
<7> good idea azar
<12> yep I find as a great step
<1> JohnCC: I cant follow whats going on once i have to read a few dozen headers and libraries and **** before I can understand the source file I am looking at.
<6> nvz: ok, good luck with it, I'll be interested in how you like it... I've wanted to do some j2me programming, but I don't have a java device (I was excited when I read about the palm jvm, but it doesn't support my device)
<5> the public key thing also works with kanotix xD
<1> JohnCC: I thought about Java programming like 6 years ago and lost inteeal fast.. its not a good language or platform for that matter IMO, its just now that I have a j2me phoneit would come in handy, and I could possibly make some money from it
<13> !tell delox99 -about meaning of dondelelcaro
<3> nvz: swing is nice
<6> nvz: Bruce Eckel wrote a decent book on programming java that you can download for free
<1> JohnCC: people pay for the conveinience of the software. you can program an arcade cl***ic that hasnt sold for more than $1 in two decades, for like $5 possibly even monthly :P
<6> nvz: inteeal?
<3> nvz: ugly.. yes slow .. yes but nice to code
<1> JohnCC: I got books comming from Carnegie Library
<14> hi all
<7> !dpkg
<6> nvz: ok, cool... I do most of my development in java and quite like it (I only wish it was free...)
<14> can somebody help me with unstable/udev?
<1> JohnCC: books specifically for wireless java and java servelets
<13> |aSa|: just ask you question
<13> s/you/your/
<14> i can't figure how devices like /dev/lp* /dev/ttyS* and so on can be created
<6> nvz: Bruce's book is about java dev in general. Might be worthwhile as a foundation (and something you can flip through until the other books arrive)
<14> or /dev/parport* - the one i need right now
<1> JohnCC: seems free enough for me.. because I dont have to pay to develop apps for my phone which is all I want right now.. I am not really into using it for business yet
<6> nvz: I meant free as in freedom. You're right, its free as in price...
<1> JohnCC: I already understand basic java ideas from learning it 6 years ago and not taking any real interest. only the syntyax, a subset of the core functions, and a subset of the math stuff is even part of j2me.. and you dont really write j2me anyhow, you write midp which changes from one device to the next
<0> How do I convert EPS to PDF?
<13> mhall: epstopdf works fairly well.
<0> dondelelcaro: ah i was looking with '2' in apt-cache
<0> dondelelcaro: convention violating mother****ers
<6> nvz: and you have to write midp specifically for each device your targetting?
<0> I should bust a cap on their ***es so bad they whistle out their belly buttons.
<13> mhall: heh. yeah, there are about 3 different ways that those programs are written
<1> JohnCC: I will be writing generic CLDS 1.0 Midp 1.0 j2me midlets and j2se servlets my phone isnt fancy and doesnt have extra toolkitys like some of them
<6> nvz: fair enough, best of luck!

<0> dondelelcaro: ... not showing up in apt-cache, and pdo is t3h d34d
<12> wow I am sooo out of this world: there popped up Debian books out there! for Sarge! wow
<1> JohnCC: there are variations some devices have double buffering, some dont.. some do advanced backlighting control, some dont.. some have andvance sound hardware and some dont :P
<13> mhall: it's in tetex-bin; dpkg would know too
<0> dondelelcaro: yeah i was apt-file updating just now
<12> last time I checked, 3 years ago there was only one book and that was written for Potatoe distro
<13> there are two totally different books on sarge out right now...
<13> well, one about sarge, the other about Debian which deals a bit with sarge
<12> dondelelcaro: I just saw one last week but was more for developers, this one I see now is for beginners
<12> http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0764576445.html << beginners
<13> Azar: yes, kraft's _The Debian System_ and mako, ElectricElf, and Jaldhar _The Debian Bible_
<7> whats better ubuntu or debian
<13> owner: this is #debian... what do you think we're going to say? ;-)
<15> gentoo!!!
<0> owner: if that could be answered we would not have both
<12> :)
<15> *G*
<13> |aSa|: please, keep it in the channel; I don't use udev.
<0> owner: to get from where you are to where you want to be, decide on an application domain
<0> !msgsmite |aSa|
<0> damn
<16> how do i get ssl support in firefox?
<13> opqdonut: it already has it?
<16> hmm, well i get some funky results with a https:// url
<13> opqdonut: like what?
<12> http://www.bash.org/?464385 << gentoo
<0> dpkg, msgsmite $1 is <action> pelts $1 with others' spambot queries for har***ing users without permission.
<8> okay, mhall
<16> dondelelcaro: works with another https url, seems i have a name resolution problem instead
<17> Azar: nice bash.org, i bet that line will break like a crack whore
<0> dondelelcaro: unusual to have to ban someone with a cloak i would ***ume (except tor), am i right?
<18> just trying to take a poll here, not asking for help - anyone know how to use ftp with macdef?
<0> !tell peej about poll
<0> peej: beware of badgers
<0> peej: as well as the inevitable mushrooms and snakes
<18> oh. Is there such a thing as a good poll?
<0> peej: not so far as i can tell; they tend to cause wars in the channel
<12> :)
<0> peej: the one kind that can be OK is if you have about 5 different apps for some purpose
<12> http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1565927052.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg << October 1999 I bet that's the old potato
<0> peej: and can't find a comparison when you google their names
<19> a question: which version of Linux mostly be used in enterprise
<12> Manplus: SuSe
<0> hmm, one would probably have to guess ScrewSE or rootcrap, Manplus
<7> manplus, ubuntu
<0> owner: no, couldn't possibly be, it doesn't have commercial support contracting
<7> it does
<7> paid support
<19> what about redhat
<0> owner: not first party i don't think
<20> so i have found sarge is really not for me.. i have read about testing and it seems like it would be a better fit for me. but i am wondering where some docs are on unstable?
<0> Manplus: 00:05 < mhall> hmm, one would probably have to guess ScrewSE or rootcrap, Manplus
<18> I'm sorta writing an article about ftp and macdef for debian admin. I never knew about it until, um.... today. And I've used ftp for about 15years now. I was wondering if the article would be relevant and useful, so I wanted to know the state of awareness by debian guys on the channel.
<21> afair Red Hat has about 50%, Debian a bit less than 20, ubuntu about 10
<7> http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/paidsupport
<21> its beyond me, though, how redhat got to be there
<0> peej: well i never heard of macdef
<0> starfishy: first mover advantage
<0> starfishy: same reason we still have intel
<7> http://www.ubuntu.com/support/supportoptions/paidsupport
<12> rend once you have / testing or / unstable in your apt sources.list it automatically goes and installs from the right archives
<0> owner: Sorry. The page you have requested does not exist. Try one of the following pages with similar names or see the full title index.
<0> !smite owner
<19> and in the field of developing which would be mostly used
<7> lol
<0> owner: you might have to change your nick to 'ownee' now
<20> Azar, right...
<7> the second link works
<20> Azar, but i was thinking about a more high level overview of when each is suitable.. already read what dpkg has to say
