<0> like weight was lifted
<1> oh it's working? :)
<0> jshriver_: you installed sarge?
<0> yup!
<1> yeah
<1> lol
<0> jshriver_: ok what kernel are you currently booted into?
<1> 2.6.15.1
<0> on sarge? that's non-standard.
<0> 2.6.8 is the latest
<1> I have alsa compiled in, no OSS now.. and I choose M for every possible PCI sound card.. and added the oss emulation builtin
<1> na I downloaed the tarball and gone from there
<1> works nice except for sound
<0> oh god.....
<0> yeah, you can only use one or the other

<0> first off, just get rid of OSS altogether
<0> and M all of ALSA
<0> recompile, reboot
<0> that's it
<2> ok i know thisisnt ubutnu but whats the diffrence between debian & ubuntu
<0> !ubuntu
<3> ubuntu is probably not Debian. See http://www.ubuntulinux.org. IRC channel is #ubuntu (not here!) http://interviews.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=144934&cid=12136879 Ask me about <Based on Debian>, or Even Mark Shuttleworth says this is not Debian..
<0> !based on debian
<3> Knoppix, Libranet, Corel/Xandros, Stormix, Progeny, Linspire, DamnSmallLinux, Ubuntu, Kurumin, Agnula, Xebian, and so on are *not* Debian. Just because something's "based on" Debian doesn't mean we can support it. You'll maybe get a Debian answer, and if it doesn't work, you're out of luck. Your best option is to join the channel for your distro.
<0> raden: hrm, what it means is that each based-on-debian distro usually has its own upstream packages that are meant to be used with that distro - in other words, you can't mix and match deb source repositories
<4> anyone know what package libdl is in?
<0> ilpavox: is http://packages.debian.org down?
<5> ilpavox: libc6-dev, I think
<4> ty
<6> Ubuntu uses its own repos, and it has features to allow you to do entire distro upgrades without dl'ing a new CD (you just change repos). It doesn't have the same amount of software in its repos though, Debian has more. Ubuntu basically takes Debian, makes it a bit more noob friendly at the cost of limiting it somewhat.
<6> takes Debian and makes*
<7> hmm I guess the ncurses dopewars frontend isnt in debian
<1> back
<1> sorry tink my dogs sick...
<1> scrolls back
<7> nm.. its all in one binary :P
<8> dopewars... linux?
<0> Grackshrike: uhm, what do you mean, allows you to do entire distro upgrades? what do you think apt-get update && aptitude upgrade && aptitude dist-upgrade do?
<1> how do you install a kernel from debian then? Im apt-cache searching now
<9> somebody probably put it into perl or something, nvz
<10> vyrus001: what package did you reinstall?
<11> gnufan: ftpd-ssl
<7> Hobz: I didnt know the dopewars binary contained both frontends.. I thought they were separate.
<12> how can you tell what all packages are installed via the package management system in debian
<8> nvz: where is this dopewars game?
<6> Oh Gnea, ok. I just read that comment somewhere and it must have mean that in respect to not-debian distros. I was just trying to give a more comprehensive answer than a generalized bot smacking.
<7> italy: in the dopewars package, duh or on dopewars.sf.net
<5> drpphil: dpkg -l
<8> nvz: nice.
<6> My other points still stand though.
<5> drpphil: or "dpkg -l | grep ^ii", strictly-speaking
<1> hrm.. do you have to isntall anything other than kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686? will it get all of the modules too?
<12> Dwonis: thanks
<1> brb
<10> vyrus001: Hmm looks like ftpd-ssl doesn't install anything to start itself.... weird - looks like a packaging issue to me.
<13> whenever i compile anything i get cup1 temperature above threshold .. is ther some way to tur the message off ?
<13> it just keeps messing up my terminal contents ...
<8> ...
<8> I installed dopewars
<8> but where did it go? :P
<14> Flimzy:: No, still not working, I changed the input wav file by cropping the clicks at start and end but still get a track duration change now from 2:07 down to 1:25 with just a change of format from wav to cdr. the original sample rate is 11025 so its a straight 1:4 ratio
<8> nevermind.
<15> im having a strange bug with my debian sarge netinst CD
<8> what the ****
<8> multiplayer??
<15> im getting a "couldn't download libstdc++5
<15> " error
<15> i burned two cds, just in case, same problem.
<15> suggestions?
<16> okay, I'm going to get some sleep.
<16> And rest my eyes from this nightmare.
<16> G'night folks.
<17> floundering: Well then you're still not doing it right.
<18>
<10> vyrus001: probably expect you to use the inetd.conf or similar (xinetd) to start it at a guess
<5> floundering: something like this (but maybe not exactly this) might work: sox -t sw -r 44100 -c 2 inputfile.cdr -t wav -r 11025 -c 2 outputfile.wav resample

<19> hi. May I get directions on learning how to view dependency trees of the installed packages of my choice?
<7> bp7: man apt-cache
<19> nvz: ok thanks
<7> bp7: see also maybe installing packages like apt-rdepends, apt-file, deporphan, deb-foster..etc or perhaps using a package manager like aptitude or synaptic
<1> hrm ok I'm in the latest debian kernel.. 2.8.something...
<1> no sound...running alsaconf
<1> how can I check that it's not muted? I used setmixer -V to turn everything to 100
<20> what utility should I use to split reiserfs ?
<1> split? as in repartition?
<1> maybe qtparted...
<20> repartion or split, I don't want to loose current data
<1> qtparted is the only thing that *might* do it.. check their website first though.. it just seems to be the most robust repartition tool for linux
<20> not in debian's cache
<11> gnufan: too bad its not in the conf file
<11> and locate dosnt find it so i cant add it
<12> iwconfig: error while loading shared libraries: libiw.so.27: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
<10> vyrus001: I have in.ftpd in inetd.conf
<10> vyrus001: try "dpkg -L <packagename>" to figure out what is where.
<11> hm
<21> !!tell jeeves_moss apache uninstall
<21> any one know how to uninstall packages that were installed using Apt-get install?
<22> apt-get remove
<21> coweater: thanks.
<23> could anyone help me with viewcvs? I have the package installed, but I have no idea what to do to apache to actually start using viewcvs
<23> I can't find any documentation
<21> coweater: do you know if there is a package for sarge for PHP5?
<22> dunno, check backports
<23> Jeeves_Moss: not natively, but if you are willing to use backports.org, they have one
<23> well, I guess it's "native" but it's not "official"
<21> dewi: will the one from PHP's web site work? I tried installing it, and I don't think it worked.
<23> Jeeves_Moss: they have a .deb? personally I'd use something made by debian people; they know the system better
<14> Flimzy:: the infile and outfile rates need switching but thats just the sort of thing thats giving me overspeed output. I had not specified the input file rate or type as signed word befor but its made no difference :( crap- I am going to have to fire up nero
<23> Jeeves_Moss: backports.org is relatively close to the debian community. Compared to php guys anyway.
<21> dewi: no, its sourcecode.
<21> dewi: ok, I've read that you should install it first, then install apache afterwords. Sudgestions?
<7> if my gateway doesnt support dyndns is there a way I can run a dyndns client on my box behind it perhaps with port forwarding to update the IP on the dyndns if/when it changes?
<23> Jeeves_Moss: that sounds... silly
<7> my box is debian sarge of course, if there is something available
<21> Dewi: sudgestons? or on-line howto (that you KNOW is safe)?
<23> Jeeves_Moss: PHP works within apache, not the other way around
<23> Jeeves_Moss: my suggestion is to add some backports.org sources, use /etc/apt_preferences to "pin" them to a low priority, and then go into aptitude and select "apache2" and "php5", and hit install. then it just works.
<7> I am trying to design some games and stuff for my mobile phone and I am thinking of using apache to serve them but I'd like to be able to use my hostname without having to worry about my ip changing
<21> dewi: thats what I thought, but I was reading something that sudgested you install it first for some dumb reason. thats why I asked if you know of any good howtos that are knowen safe.
<7> I am too lazy to learn J2ME so I am writing Python CGI apps with WML interfaces :P
<21> dewi: how would I go about doing that exactuly.
<23> Jeeves_Moss: I don't know of any docs. But I'm pretty sure that in debian, apache files are actually a dependancy of php5, you cannot really install it first
<23> Jeeves_Moss: http://pastebin.com/530019
<21> dewi: ok, thanks, I'm off to do some reading.
<14> Flimzy:: thanks for your help.
<23> Jeeves_Moss: if you add that stuff to your apt configuration, you can then get aptitude to install php5, with a bit of coercion.
<23> Jeeves_Moss: because it's pinned to -1 it won't let you install backports stuff "by default" but if you hit Enter on a package and select the specific backports instance from the "versions" list, it'll let you select it
<21> Dewi: thanks again, let me do some quick reading.
<23> Why this shattered viewcvs?!?!?!
<23> anyone know where the docs are that say how to configure apache to run viewcvs?
<24> dvm, hola
<24> dvm, hi man
<10> Jeeves_Moss: I used dotdeb
<25> met siang
<23> Jeeves_Moss: dotdeb is the same deal as backports, just different guys. I use both, but I'm pretty sure backports is considered a little more "respected", but slower to release. I've used PHP5 packages from both of them.
<23> Jeeves_Moss: with no issues so far
<21> dewi: I wonder why Debian hasen't realeased PHP anythign yet.
<26> dominicano: hello man
<25> hii
<23> Jeeves_Moss: PHP5 only went into testing about... less than 2 months ago
<26> dominicano: Im just wake up man ;-), i have sleep a bit
<21> Dewi: I mean anything php.
<24> dvm, are you dvm1981 _?
<23> Jeeves_Moss: it has some complicated and annoying dependancies on GTK or QT something like that
<26> dominicano: yes
<23> Jeeves_Moss: debian sarge has php4
<21> Dewi: I rember trying to install QT, that was a pain in teh ***.
<24> dvm, how much did you sleep_?
<27> is there an official debian help channel?
<24> dvm, a couple of hours_?
