<0> wmhtet: no idea. <1> ok, let me try that, jm_ (but I need to do google on how to enable dmix first thought :D ) <2> Is there anything special you have to do in order to save files to a FAT32 partition while in Linux? <1> thx anyway liable <3> wmhtet: /msg dpkg dmix <1> jm_ thx <3> powergoal: as user or root? <0> good luck with dmix :) <2> either <1> I am googling but it help a lot <1> :D <3> it works fine for root <2> and as user? <1> i mean dpkg sugest <0> !vfatrw
<4> To get write access to a vfat partition when mounting it with fstab, use the line "/dev/partition /mount/point vfat defaults,uid=USERID,gid=GROUPID,umask=002 0 0" in /etc/fstab. umask=002 will make the partition rwxrwxr-x, while umask=022 will make it rwxr-xr-x. Get your user/group ids with the command "id". This also applies to NTFS, if you replace "vfat" with "ntfs" (although you can't currently easily _write_ to NTFS with Linux).. <3> you have to change mount options (umask/dmask/fmask or uid/gid) <2> thankyou dpkg <4> no worries, powergoal <0> powergoal: home is all set? <5> can i use wine with let say notepad to open a file like so wine "C:\Program File\Notepad\notepad.exe" -e file <2> im putting it in now :) <5> i am just trying to figure out the cli syntax if i can use it like that with wine or something similar? <6> pjv: wine has a native notepad <0> pjv: i cant help it, but why? <5> liable: i want to make it a generic command to open files for Fireworks or Dreamweaver <0> pjv: oh. <7> question: doesn't debian linux use something better than realplayer? <5> yeah so if i click on a file for fireworks my desktop know i use dreamweaver to open such files with wine <8> Azar: any movie player in debian you like <5> but i must have the right syntax to do so <9> http://www.d2dc.net/~deek/nice_breasts.jpg <8> Azar: just need the non-dfsg w32codecs package from marillat <9> Azar: debian doesn't have realplayer, luckily <0> Azar: w32codecs does the old real files but iirc you need realplayer for newer ones. <7> nvz sounds great because I hate the old creepy realplayer <10> Could somebody please traceroute one of {www,ns1,ns2}.hut.fi - the whole /16 seems to go !H for me :-( <0> tarzeau: underdone! <2> liable: I got it! Thanks for all your help! <3> nonix4: H as in hate you? :) <7> yay ok VLC media gonna be <9> nonix4: same here <0> powergoal: yay :) <9> nonix4: 8 zch-b1-geth3-1.telia.net (213.248.79.189) 0.922 ms !H * 0.815 ms !H <11> why can't i say "username=smagnusson; cd ~$username" ? when cd ~smagnusson works. <11> I am trying to determine the home directory of a user... <11> in a bash script. <10> tarzeau: damn, can't blame my own ISP for that then - ain't a point-to-point problem :-( <9> nonix4, jm_ in nethack: H a giant humanoid--More-- <8> phobo: foo="bar"; cd "$HOME/$foo" <9> and guess what's funny? All types of giants share a love for men. heh <0> wtf? <8> phobo: $HOME and $USER are predefined in the environment <11> nvz: but what about when the homedirectory is a different from the username? otherwise I could use go /home/$username <9> ow how i hate ATI <8> phobo: $USER is always defined by the environment as the current user and $HOME as the homedir no matter if its /$USER, /home/$USER, /srv/$USER, /media/usb/$USER.. etc <1> jm_ liable , I found the source of the problem, realplay use oss and I have alsa , so it is not finding the right driver(?) here is some fix <1> apt-get intsall alsa-oss <1> export AUDIO=/dev/dsp0 <1> aoss realplay <1> but I still need to make it permenant cause if the browser start realplay itself, it is not using alsa oss wrapper and still producing no sound <0> wmhtet: it should be able to use the asla oss emulating module .. snd_pcm_oss <1> ah ... I have not tried export AUDIO=/dev/dsp0 though, I just install ***-oss and tried aoss realplay right away <12> wmhtet: for oss support in alsa you should just need to modprobe snd-pcm-oss ; to make that happen at every boot, add it to /etc/modules <1> liable, stew , thx, I will try that <13> I'm having sound issues of my own. I just installed debian tonight to give it a shot and when I boot it up the wrong alsa drivers are used. I have to run alsaconf to correct it. <9> is it right i can't build ati kernel module with only kernel headers? <14> My very first debian install <9> awwwww how i absolutely hate ATI. i should've brought my own awful damn nvidia crap card <14> used testing and everything works on pavilion zv6000 laptop <7> I am trying to use this source and it does not seem to be recognized: deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main <13> thats good to hear ralpho. I just purchased a pavillion zd8000. It should arrive in a few weeks. <14> apt-get i dont know how to work but i got xchat installed:) <13> is there a reason that there is no modprobe.conf in the /etc directory? <14> I just have to figure out how to install bcm43xx-modules-2.6.15-1-486_20060212-3_i386.deb <3> wmhtet: for Firefox, you can simply edit ~/.mozilla/firefox/rc (or wherever your file/dir is) and add FIREFOX_DSP=aoss
<3> tubasoldier: yes <14> got some reading to do <14> to setup wireless <15> mobprobe -v fglrx <13> ralpho if you have the file you can simply type 'dpkg --install nameofpackage.deb' as root of course <14> cool thanks <15> fglrx:version magic '2.6.15 preempt pentiumm gcc-4.0' should be 'xxxxxx xxxxx gcc-3.3' <15> what? <16> jm what is that firefox you gave for? <13> jm_: what is the reasoning for no modprobe.conf? I'm new to debian and trying to understand it. <16> FIREFOX_DSP=aoss what does this do? <15> I compiled the kernel and m-a 'ed the fglrx-driver and so <15> it can't just mobprobe <14> even my ati 200 m works with exceleration <14> holy crap <14> I am so pleased <17> Hi all <3> tubasoldier: module-init-tools used for 2.6 kernel use /etc/modprobe.d - man modprobe (that file can be used, but is optional) <3> qwertz: what do you mean what it is for? it's to tell it to use AOSS wrapper for sounds <13> jm_: ah. ok. thanks for the information <1> jm_ thx again , actually I also have problem with rhythmbox also but it seems that they all are related to relying on oss, they are all solved now (partially?) thx you all again, I will try the firefox suggestion but I am more of a opera user though, I am chatting with Opera! :) <18> hello <6> she'aw! I found the power adapter for my ldc screen. muhuhahaaa <18> whens the next version of debian come out? <6> when it's ready <18> i know that <18> but is there like a date? <19> then why'd you ask? <3> !+when will etch release <4> Etch will release WIR; SIYH. There are no current estimates. Ask me about <etch pool>, <wir>, <siyh>. Join in and help out, or see the release team's latest timeline at http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2006/01/msg00001.html <6> the date is literally "when it's ready" <6> etch hasn't even frozen yet, so it's a long ways off <18> k <18> the new ubuntu was pused back a long ways....... <18> :-p <18> and the new suse <18> i'm kinda bummed <6> *yawn* that's nice. <18> lol <18> i work for geek squad i gotta keep up lol <7> I am so dumb I can't even remember if I have a DVD or CD, lspci will not show me, how can I find out? <6> Azar: /var/log/dmesg <7> thanks Supaplex <6> unless you loaded ide-{cd,scsi} after boot, then it'll be in syslog <6> "somewhere" hehe <20> I'm having trouble getting my debian box to send & receive mail, I'm using otrs as a trouble ticket system but I can't send receive mail with it-the docs talk about send mail but <6> cdrecord --scanbus might be helpfull to. <16> in bash shell scripting, is this correct? ihap= $ihap + 1; <20> when i follow them it errors out when i try to send a email <6> qwertz: #bash . afaik, it's ihap=$(($ihap+1)) or $[$ihap+1] YMMV. <21> Supaplex: No $ required in arithmetic expansion: $(( ihap + 1 )) or even $(( ihap = ihap + 1 )) <21> Supaplex: ... note that the latter then tries to execute itself. <7> what is lirc? <21> !tell Azar about search <21> Azar: http://packages.debian.org/<packagename> <0> Azar: infrared ****s iirc <7> I am reading the documentation that came with lirc but I have no idea what they talk about <7> ah oh thank you liable, I guess I never needed that in the first place <21> Azar: It configures IR ports. Used for eg: communicating with PDAs. <21> Azar: Not an IRC client if that's what you're looking for. <21> Azar: apt-cache show <packagename> also works, BTW. <3> Description: Linux Infra-red Remote Control support <7> :) no I downloadedn/installed VLC and it said lirc was recommended, what stupid I am <0> Azar: for remote controls.. <22> Hi Folks, how can I enable the gnome system sounds without using sound server? <7> interesting though <21> SonnyBurnett: You can use old-style sound support, Eg: oss or similar. I'd recommend alsa myself though. <22> karsten, I use alsa <22> karsten, I mean without using a sound server daemon... <23> when I try to mount my usb stick with -t vfat (it is fat32 formatted)... I get the error "unknown filetype"... why can that be? <24> alsa wont restore my mixer settings at startup, can anybody point me in the right direction to fix this? <0> SonnyBurnett: gnome can use the sound card, just not at the same time as another app <22> ealm, mmmmm I hada that error.... where are you trying to mount it? <0> marccd: alsactrl store?
