Comments:

<0> daeos maybe there is no answer there
<1> aptitude doesnt appear to be on the box any more since i ran dist-upgrade
<2> String: pay attention to what apt wants to remove when you do a dist-upgrade
<3> ~$ urxvt -fn "xft:Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:pixelsize=12"
<3> urxvt: unable to load base fontset, please specify a valid one using -fn, aborting.
<3> :(
<4> wols_: which setup for sqwebmail should be most secure? symlink, copying the folder directly to the www folder or a custom setup?
<3> that -fn worked fine in previous versions of debian, and does work fine with current versions of ubuntu. bitstream vera sans mono works fine in other applications, just not in rxvt-unicode. anyone have any ideas?
<5> where can i get recent debian version of imagemagick from?
<2> the repos?
<6> hi
<6> i have a higher version of a certain lib installed
<6> but apt-get keeps on wanting a lower version
<6> as if its not seeing i have a better version installed
<6> what do i do?
<2> |main|: because *something* has a depends on the lower version

<7> can anyone tell me what application I need to do a secure file deletion with Etch/ext3?
<6> liable: but what do i do?
<8> close_to_debian: your old name was better ;P
<6> can i fool apt-get in installing anyway?
<9> jilocasin: A hammer usually works.
<6> im certain it should be ok..
<10> !test
<2> |main|: well apt thinks otherwise. downgrade it with dpkg
<11> whats the name of the first wireless interface? akin to eth0?
<2> debian: dpkg is dead
<12> Dwonis: Thanks but i like this better
<10> :~(
<2> weasel00: could be eth0, wlan0, ath0, eth2 ...
<7> MasterOFMagic: yea, but it's hard to use it after that. Under Win2k I use Eraser religiously. I can't trust a machine that doesn't let you securely delete your old files.
<13> Azar: continuing with the reported chkrootkit (infected ports: 464 and a process hidden for readdir & ps command w/possible LKM tojan installed...). I added a drop rule to iptables for tcp on 465. Before, lsof -i :465 reported [xinetd 5917 root 10u IPv4 10607266 TCP * :ssmtp (LISTEN)] was running on that port. I killed PID 4917 and now nmap localhost returns 465/tcp as filtered rather than open. Just ran chkrootkit again
<2> debian: apt is alive
<6> how do u downgrade with apt?
<11> liable : there isnt really a standard then?
<12> Dwonis: Thanks but i like this
<8> jilocasin: Your best bet is to use an encrypted filesystem in the first place. Modern journalling filesystems aren't very good at *really* erasing your data (except when you're trying to recover something important)
<2> weasel00: nope
<11> liable : thank you
<13> oops. port 465 not 464
<5> sorry, was away...
<2> weasel00: iwconfig will tell you which is the wireless iface
<5> where can i get recent debian version of imagemagick from?
<14> dpkg: wake up
<11> liable : oh cool.. =)
<15> ok
<15> im here
<13> ganymed: debian repositories, sourceforge/project's CVS/SVN I guess.
<7> Dwonis: seems like overkill when you just want to actually 'delete' a file. Windows can manage it, MacOS can manage it, are you telling me that Linux can't?
<15> how do i get my computer to recognize my cd burner, or how do i enableitr
<11> liable : is iwconfig part of the madwifi pkg?
<2> ganymed_: newer than in the repo??
<8> jilocasin: I'm telling you that I wouldn't trust Windows or MacOS to do a good job of it, either
<5> whitehorse: have tried this. only rpms and tarballs... alien doesn't work either
<16> what is the program to rerun the configration of X?
<2> weasel00: no, wireless-tools. if you have an atheros card, then your iface will be ath0
<15> anyone? please help
<14> !drxx blafd
<14> ffs
<2> avont_: it should be recognised.
<7> Dwonis: a good file system shouldn't 'loose' files accidentally, but should let you destroy files purposely.
<8> jilocasin: The "wipe" package is probably what you want
<14> blafd: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 or dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
<5> liable: what repo are you talking about? i need the newest, if possible
<13> Anyone else familiar with chkrootkit under sarge and able to determine whether its a false positive or whether I should adopt a sad face, do feel free to chime in.
<15> liable: i don't think it is, the drive icon is not in my computer
<8> jilocasin: but honestly, if overwriting a file with zeros isn't good enough for you, then you shouldn't really trust these "secure deletion" tools on _any_ OS.
<16> ta
<2> ganymed_: um, the repository where you download all your packagesss... if you need the newest, try a tarball install or get it from sid
<14> liable: that wasn't a good idea
<5> liable: thx
<13> Google didn't help apart from to indicate false positives can happen on occasion and some references to Woody.
<2> abrotman: why why why??
<4> abrotman: i had a good question here, which setup for sqwebmail should be most secure? symlink, copying the folder directly to the www folder or a custom setup?
<14> liable: because he's going to mix systems .. and end up broken
<4> have*
<14> daeos: an apache alias?

<2> abrotman: yes, it does seem to have quite a few depends.. :)
<0> whitehorse1: port 465: tcp urd URL rendesvous directory for SSM / udp igmpv3lite IGMP over UDP for SSM
<2> abrotman: but he asked how!
<2> ganymed_: you do realise getting **** from sid repos is a good way to break your system??
<7> Dwonis: minimum 7 p*** Guttmann usually on individual files, weekly wipe of all free space on the drive with US DoD 5220-22.M
<2> there.. standard warning..
<7> Dwonis: to catch things like logs and web cashe that I didn't explicitly delete
<0> whitehorse1: also on tcp/udp same port is used by smtps: smtp protocol over TLS/SSL
<8> jilocasin: It isn't entirely the filesystem's fault, either. Modern drives will sometimes remap sectors, making the old data inaccessible to the operating system
<13> Azar Hmm, nmap claimed smtps was the service on port 465 on here
<13> ah, yep
<5> liable: i know. but imagemagick might already be broken. are those things in sid unstable versions of the progs or just unstable deb version of stable progs?
<7> Dwonis: true, but that's no reason not to practice good digital hygiene
<14> ganymed_: if you don't know .. PLEASE don't use it
<13> azar so... how might I determine if chkrootkit's messages of doom were valid?
<17> Trying to launch debian sarge 3.1 on old machine with vga card s3 pci unsuccessfully. using dpkg-reconfigure xserver xfree86 wont work. Knoppix runs fine on box 1 but not box 2. any help?
<14> deeee: it's dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 .. notice the dash .. also .. S3 ****s .. find somehting else if you can
<5> abrotman: don't worry, i won't get on your nerves with my-system-does-not-work-please-help-me-questions :)
<2> ganymed_: get the tarball, then you can put it in /local and it wont **** with your system (if it builds with your libs)
<14> ganymed_: no . you'll just bother everyone else :)
<7> Dwonis: nope, wipe doesn't work with journaled FS either
<8> jilocasin: It ultimately depends on who your adversary is, and what sort of attacks s/he can mount.
<13> chkrootkit -x lkm does report what's happening on those PIDs not in readdir/ps output. basically bind/named and... sbin/init :/
<17> abrotman: knoppix deals fine with box 1
<14> jilocasin: dban.sf.net
<8> jilocasin: like I said, if zeroing the sectors isn't enough for you, then I wouldn't put much faith in any of these tools
<14> deeee: i understand that .. but S3 cards are really bad .. what does your X log say?
<5> but can u answer my question anyway, i would like to know
<5> liable: i know. but imagemagick might already be broken. are those things in sid unstable versions of the progs or just unstable deb version of stable progs?
<18> If i compile a package from source, should i then make a .deb pagkage, so my apt/dpkg system wont break???
<17> abrotman: "Fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices
<13> ganymed_ the former.
<7> Dwonis: local law enforcement, city level government, medium sized corp. Overwriting with zero's is just too easy to recover, multip*** pseudorandom numbers at least.
<2> ganymed_: can be both
<2> ganymed_: why do you think its broken?? just remove the debian one, and install the tarball
<7> abrotman: nice when I want to finally kill all the data, but when I retire a hard drive I usually use a 20lb sledge hammer. ;)
<19> jilocasin: set up a loopback device, fill the remaining free space, put dm-crypt + aes on it, and fill it with zero's (should in turn get encrypted)
<17> Hei abrotman, thanks man. I think ill have to study more. :)
<19> jilocasin: that ought to stop many entities :-)
<13> jilocasin recoverable by companie like ontrack still (at great cost of course)
<8> jilocasin: You can't guarantee that you're ever writing over all the same physical areas. Also, don't forget about your swap space
<14> jilocasin: that's not good enough
<18> A FAQ! If i compile a package from source, should i then make a .deb pagkage, so my apt/dpkg system wont break???
<19> whitehorse1: there's a difference being able to recover it and being able to decrypt it
<14> th0ger: you can ..
<20> how do I send a message to a user on a different console?
<14> th0ger: or use stow or checkinstall
<14> Faithful: write
<7> eeyore: That seems to be the concensous. Use an encrypted partition. spot deletion doesn't seem to exist in linux...
<13> jilocasin a blowtorch directly onto the disk platter itself is more suitable
<4> abrotman: alias? not sure i follow, you mean like a /~folder type of location?
<21> anyone with xp on postfix-ldap?
<8> jilocasin: The best thing to do is to encrypt (with something strong, that uses AES-CTR-256 mode, for example), and then all you have to do to "delete" the files is to wipe out the key (which you WON'T have on the hard disk itself)
<14> daeos: an apache alias
<14> LittleEndian: #ldap ?
<19> the new EPIA's have "padlock" support. this thing is seriously addicting :-) fast AES in hardware
<5> liable: convert doesn't work with large amounts of pics... it says: pixel cache not open. some pics have 0 bytes, others have black horizontal stripes. it works with a smaller amount of pics, though
<19> we got the new EPIA SP board, and padlock driver supports AES (it shows up in /proc/crypto as aes, at priority 300, just above aes-i586)
<7> well, I'm rather new to Linux, Dos, Win everything, VMS. how would I go about it in Linux? Running Deb Testing here.
<14> about what?
<8> ganymed_: for f in *.jpg ; do convert "$f" "`basename "$f" .jpg`".png ; done
<2> ganymed_: no info on google irt that?
<8> ganymed_: converts all jpg files to png in the current directory, for example
<7> Dwonis: The trick though is to wipe out a file without trashing the entire filesystem, hard drive
<14> man shred ?
<21> abrotman, it runs chrooted by default and causes pain
<14> ok .. #ldap ?
<8> abrotman: apparently shred isn't anywhere near strong enough for what he wants
<5> liable: have had a look. originally, i did not want to reinstall
<22> Dwonis: Too bad.
<21> ty abrotman
