<0> netsurf3: PII ? <1> ok, "testing/unstable" is the "second most stable" to "stable" right? Did a install and things aint setup like last time i did a debian install (got the TWN window manager as default for one). <2> abrotman: no but it does have mmx <3> netsurf3: You don't have to uninstall your 2.4 kernel right away, keep it until you feel that the new kernel is the one you want to run. When you do want uninstall it, you do like when you uninstall any other package. <0> netsurf3: then you want kernel-image-2.6-386 <4> netsurf3: you will need ncurses-dev fakeroot and something else <5> I could run quake2. video it's ok. but sound doesn't work, it gives me: '/dev/dsp: Input/output error'. can anybody help me? <6> forton: no that means that you're either ****ed or mega ****ed <0> jlaw: why does he have to compile a kernel? <3> jlaw: He doesn't need that now. <3> dvs: Yes. <4> abrotman: i has not explicitly a need for it ... but it is maybe usefull <1> Shadowcat, im supermegagiga ****ed. <0> jlaw: not really <4> i = he o_O <7> Hi guys. Since 3 days I am strugling to install Debian Etch Beta 2 weekly build into a computer which has already Windows Me. I have installed Windows in a hard disk and install Debian in second. Interestingly GRUB does not recognize the Windows.
<2> hmm <4> abortman: the precompiled kernels are overloaded with stuff you never need <2> it is marking hotplud to be removed <2> is this ok? <0> jlaw: they're modules .. it doesn't affect anyhting except disk space <2> but it is installing udev <2> abrotman: this ok? <3> jlaw: You can take care of everyone that wants to compile there own kernel then, when they can be perfectly fine with a stock kernel. <0> netsurf3: udev conflicts with hotplug <3> their <8> can someone please help me with this ide card, its doing my nut now :( <9> my big beef with debian stock kernels is that apm is not available in 2.6 <8> i need a kernel that has the ac7 patches compiled into it <4> i urge noone to do it himself, but i like to do !-) <0> Vasistha: why .. apm barely ever works anyways <2> abrotman: so usb support etc will be ok stil right? <0> netsurf3: should be .. <2> lol <9> abrotman: I have an old laptop, acpi does not work -at all- <2> oops <2> heh <8> but i cant find one, and i dont have a debian system i can use to compile one, and even then compiling it is going to be a nightmare, then booting it.. well that'll be even worse <0> Vasistha: and chances are .. APM isn't implemented correctly anyways <2> acpi works perfect now <2> will the upgrade break it? <10> any body can help me fix the FN button on my laptop keyboard it acts as if its pressed and i have to keep pressing while typing to make it work correctly <9> abrotman: apm works fine for me, the fan takes care of itself, usually doesn't spin; I can suspend to ram; the computer will power-off itself <4> netsurf: if you want to do it yourself for example with the 2.6.16.16 this will help you: http://www.projektfarm.com/en/support/howto/debian_lernel_compile.html <4> doo XP ... there is one l which should be a k ... think you'll make it out^^ <9> abrotman: admittedly, I'm in the minority. compaq actually put part of the BIOS on the hard drive. The computer will not boot unless the booting hard drive has this compaq partition on it with system info. <0> Vasistha: which 2.6 from debina are you talking about? <2> abrotman: wow i am amazed at the battery tools <9> abrotman: probably 686. Last I checked, the default config doesn't even have apm available as a module, though my memory may deceive me <2> they actualy do a good job of feedback <0> for any of you EDT .. Dinocroc is now on scifi channel <0> Vasistha: no .. 2.6.12 or 2.6.xx ? what <11> Vasistha: did you try booting with acpi=off or whatever the option for disabling acpi is? <12> abrotman: Live video of it? <9> abrotman: ...sarge. not sure which <0> Vasistha: odd ... the one i have has apm .. <2> what is debconf <9> jelly-ho: oh, sure, I know the codes -- acpi=off, noacpi, apm=power_off <0> netsurf3: debconf.org <2> ahh conferences <9> abrotman: hmmm. I wonder what I did wrong... it was more an issue for my brother, because he had to run dm-crypt with 2.6, but we couldn't get the laptop to power itself on shutdown. Perhaps all I needed to do was get the module, but I didn't know that much back then <9> "power itself OFF" <13> Hi, can you open .img (pictures) files with gThumb?.. is there any other app like that? <9> what I do remember was that even after apt-getting apmd, when I tried to start it, it said the kernel didn't support it <14> SonnyBurnett: .img is a picture? <0> SonnyBurnett: have you tried `apt-cache search` <0> ? <15> sure it's not a mac disc image? <8> mac disk image is .dmg <12> what does file or stat or strings commands say/show about the .img file <15> that's one of a few extensions <16> Hi All. What is the advantage in using the <drivername>fb kernel drivers with fbdev over the (probably) native x11 drivers? <12> s/does/do/ <8> can i set up raid1 from a partition which already has files on it? <14> netman1: none <13> abrotman, apt-cache search what? img?
<14> netman1: just forget about fbdev in i386 <16> valdyn: care to elaborate? <17> netman1: fb = framebuffer... for console resolutions... x11 is X windows... as in windows!. not console <14> netman1: fbdev has no hardware acceleration worth comparing to X11 hw acceleration <2> abrotman: i need to purge hotplug <16> valdyn / onetinsoldier : so the only advantage is in a larger console? <12> valdyn: You do not believe in magic? <0> netsurf3: man dpkg <17> netman1: correct <2> ty <0> SonnyBurnett: sure. .. why not <0> whoops <0> wait <16> valdyn / onetinsoldier : Thanks guys. <17> sure.. yw <9> SonnyBurnett: did you try the command, file mysteriousimage.img ? <14> just a while guess: 'mplayer dvdrip.img' <14> s/while/wild/ <17> wow.. you are pretty wild <17> hehe.. j/k <18> hello, i am wondering, is there a way to search for a folder with exactly 1506 files in it? i do not know what the folder is called, but i know how many files, and the file extension, on the files <9> unity: what an interesting problem... I'm going to go play around with that one <13> Vasistha, this is the output: 67365722.img: JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01 <17> unity: i don't know how to do it(i used to, been too long).. but i know it can be done! <9> SonnyBurnett: just rename it to 67365722.jpg <2> what does the splash patch for 2.6 do? does it provide a image with it? <19> hi guys! <9> SonnyBurnett: then it should work everywhere <13> Vasistha, but gThumb doesnt open it <9> SonnyBurnett: if you have a whole bunch of them, use the rename command: rename 's/\.img$/\.jpg/' <9> SonnyBurnett: even after you rename it to jpg? <19> plz tell me link 2 image floppy for comps that not support boot from cd <17> something like make a script that does an ls piped into wc <19> pleeeeaze : <18> Vasistha: i bet perl script can do it easily...should i use perl or do you think there is an easier way? <13> Vasistha, I know that.... I just wanted not to that operation... <15> perl -e '$rulez' <9> unity: I have no idea. If you know how to write a perl script for it, that'd probably be best <13> Vasistha, I want gThumb to open the files without renaming them <9> SonnyBurnett: you want to make gthumb open a file with an unorthodox extention <18> Vasistha: ok i think it wouldn't take too long to learn. thanks <20> is there a way to link a dpkg's factoid to another dpkg's factoid so that we do not need to create two iddentical (don't know this name, please correct me) factoids for sinonnyms (neither this)? <9> SonnyBurnett: I'm not sure, that's gonna be pretty specific to gthumb <9> unity: good luck, have fun <15> nse: like an alias... wish I knew :) <9> SonnyBurnett: kuickshow can do it... <14> SonnyBurnett: why does it have to be gthumb specifically? <13> valdyn, Yeah you are right.. if there a better app like that then I change it <21> if i have a list of commands that i issue in bash when i boot my computer...can i write a .sh script that will do it for me at boot? <20> unity: sure there is a way <9> hey, anybody, what's the difference between irssi and irssi-text? Are they both console apps? Is the difference something to do with encryption? <15> phaedrus_: yea, @reboot via cron, or /etc/init.d depending on the scope. (and who runs it) <21> ah...they have to be run by root <9> nse: I'd be curious to hear it, dunno if unity is still around. I think he went to write a perl script <22> How stable is gcc 4.0.3? <21> its modprobe ndiswrapper <21> iwconfig wlan0 essid "" <20> Vasistha: wait. i'm thinking <21> ifconfig wlan0 up <21> and dhclient wlan0 <15> phaedrus_: you can put all that in interfaces(5) <21> those four i wish would be automated somehow <21> really? <15> it's in the man page :) <21> Supaplex...will you tell me how? <21> ok thanks <14> Vasistha: there's an irssi package? <9> valdyn: come to think of it, looks like it's only testing/unstable <14> Vasistha: irssi is contained in irssi-text, irssi-gnome is unmaintained, not working <9> valdyn: I guess that pretty much answers my question, since I'm on stable. <2> abrotman: i am getting FATAL ide_detect not found <2> it does not crash <2> but i would like to check it all the same
