Comments:

<0> Smerdy, xorg is in the newer dists, not the old ones.
<1> gnufan: apt-get clean opened the floodgates again. Thanks for that.
<2> liran: okay, well it has a wifi0. :)
<3> liran, I need the xserver-xorg .deb that was in testing before the current package in testing.
<0> rublind, is your wireless button on the laptop lit? (if it has one)
<4> rublind: PCMCIA or USB ethernet adapter :)
<5> deadcat, and don't trust the x.org changelogs for open source radeon 3d support.
<6> lazzarello: ya.. nv is pretty good if you dont need 3d, dualhead. but i kinna want both (=. and Xgl requires nvidia anyway.
<7> rublind: how about checking what chipset you have on the card, cardctl info should do it
<2> OfficeChair: hah, too much money to waste.
<1> gnufan: Now at least I can get the old version of amsn installed before she gets home from school. 14 year olds can make demanding users.
<4> rublind: Is it a 32-bit PCMCIA (CardBus) wireless card
<8> !tell Smerdy about snapshot
<2> OfficeChair, shingouz, liran: I did ifup eth0 and now it works. :) Thanks.
<6> lazzarello: ya. its pretty crappy. although theres claim that the /etc/dri.conf file was a help in performance but i dont see it.
<7> rublind: excellent

<4> rublind: Good to hear. :)
<4> rublind: Enjoy Debian Etch. :)
<0> rublind, great.
<9> hesco: the apt-howto covered mixed systems
<2> OfficeChair: hah, no to get sound working.
<7> rublind: now that you have the network running, you could try alsaconf :p
<2> shingouz: hah, alright.
<10> liran, me hamatzav? :D
<10> ma
<0> Silent_al, all good.
<9> hesco: I think somehow you got corrupt package in the cache - it can happen if you interrupt "apt" allegedly, but I've never seen it.
<0> Silent_al, you?
<9> hesco: you weren't out of disk space?!
<3> jelly-ho, that looks promising, but I get a bad link from search results to where I might find the .deb. :(
<10> fine thanx :) nice to see another israeli here
<0> Silent_al, all the time :P
<4> rublind: Did you install alsa-base?
<2> shingouz: it didn't find alsaconf, should I re-apt get alsa-base ?
<2> OfficeChair: yeah, I did.
<4> rublind: Try again.
<5> !tell rublind about alsa
<2> OfficeChair: how do you upgrade with apt-get?
<2> OfficeChair: nevermind.
<4> You could do apt-get upgrade alsa-base
<11> I have resolved my problem to get the man pages in another language -> look at the 'locale' command and setting up the 'LANGUAGE' variable ex: 'LANGUAGE=nl_NL' and not the 'LANG=nl_NL'
<2> OfficeChair: I reinstalled alsa-base and still no alsaconf
<11> For the interesting people ...
<4> Ah, alsa-utils
<12> rublind: alsa-utils
<2> strider: okay, thank you.
<8> Smerdy: if you remember the exact version, you could try browsing the http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/pool/ directly.
<4> dvm1981: My German isn't good enough yet to switch locales. :)
<6> xcompgr and transset didnt even hit unstable from experimental and they are already soon to be useless. hahah. cant believe i waited so long for those 2 and now i am waiting for Xgl
<11> OfficeChair: BTW. Dutch and the German are not the same languae :-/
<6> this sounds really stupid : The following NEW packages will be installed: fontconfig-config
<13> hm, attempting to install nvidia drivers into kernel, ive got the source etc, linked it, ran the nvidia installer, and it says it cant find the source version.h && therefore its likely i havent configured the kernel headers? any clues?:x
<11> OfficeChair: But i understand ;-)
<14> always nvidia and proprietary software :/
<15> hi, im looking for good hex editor in gtk2
<15> what would that be?
<5> !tell arsen nvidia one liner
<5> !tell arsen about nvidia one liner
<13> ty :)
<9> dvm1981: hehe - I read a menu in Holland once using my very bad German, but I can't understand any spoken Dutch.
<15> uhm, good hex editor in general?
<10> arsen, you do need the kernel headers if you are usine the nvidia installer
<13> i have them ;x
<16> user___: ultraedit
<10> using*
<16> hee hee
<17> !tell arsen about nvidia-installer
<2> OfficeChair: I did alsaconf, but I don't know if it's working... it saw the proper sound card...
<15> okay
<11> gnufan: It's a derivated language or so, not sure. There are words that look +- the same, or with a bit difference. My native language are Dutch and understand nothing from the German language :-/
<15> im looking for good hex editor for linux
<1> gnufan: ok. I have /etc/apt/preferences configured to pin amsn at the version currently in testing, priority 990. Its running upgrade still. When that's complete, I'll reinstall amsn and see if I get a working instance of the new version. Thanks for that quick apt tutorial. I had missed clean and setup in my previous readings. Appreciate you rounding that out for me.
<4> rublind: See if alsamixer works
<15> ultra
<5> rublind, cat /proc/asound/cards
<15> edit isn't for linux as far as i can see?
<2> OfficeChair: yeah, I see a mixer, but how do I test? (do ThinkPads even have speakers built in?)

<7> rublind: run alsamixer, check the levels, then try playing something with it. on a thinkpad Fn+PgUp/PgDn has some effect on the sound levels too
<7> rublind: iirc the 570E should have speakers
<2> shingouz, okay.
<4> rublind: rublind speaker-test
<10> rublind, are you using gnome ?
<9> hesco: whats the demands for the latest AMSN for anyway?
<2> I'm using kde.
<4> 570E? That is an older machine. :)
<4> rublind: Does speaker-test work?
<2> OfficeChair: I hear nothing.
<10> rublind,oh . never mind :)
<2> OfficeChair: yeah, really old.
<2> OfficeChair: in alsamixer, PC Speak in Item has [Off] written next to it.
<7> rublind: hit the fn + pgup once or twice
<4> rublind: That isn't needed.
<18> Hello, I had a question about Debian Linux that I don't believe is present in the F.A.Q. Does anyone here know if Debian supports the screen reading package for the blind called speakup in it's acutal distrobution?
<18> actual*
<2> shingouz, okay, done. OfficeChair: okay.
<4> Keith-BlindUser: s/distrobution/distribution
<4> rublind: Any sound?
<14> Keith-BlindUser: debian isn't linux
<2> OfficeChair: with speaker-test, I get a lot of static, but that means it works.
<19> hello all
<7> Keith-BlindUser: looks like apt-cache search speakup does find at least some kernel modules for it
<4> rublind: Err, speaker-test should play a sine wave
<19> am having trouble getting online
<2> OfficeChair: I get static.
<1> gnufan: some sort of new functionality. My server in the closet runs testing. Her machine runs stable. Her machine was down for a couple of days while we swapped a fan. She used mine and says there is some new features having something to do with pictures. Their website headlines webcam support in the new version, but since she doesn't have a webcam, I doubt that is it. But she got spoiled operating in my testing environment and now
<7> rublind: what sound module you using? lsmod | grep snd
<4> rublind: See if you can cat a WAV file to /dev/dsp
<19> i am using agnula, a debian branch- on a dell inspiron 3700- i see eth0 recognized at boot- but no luck afterwards
<9> Keith-BlindUser: the unstable version definitely has a patched kernel for speakup - but presumably that means it must be installed without speakup - and then the package installed - might be challenging if nothing else lets you read the screen during the install.
<18> Witch is exactly what speakup would be. Speakup is a screen reader that works in console mode, and a user can install Debian through a text install by typing Linux speakup_synth=<synthKeyword> So: for a Braille 'N Speak or some other note-taker: Speakup_synth=bns.
<2> shingouz: uh... I don't know, there are a few things, I think snd_cs46xx
<2> OfficeChair: I don't have a WAV file.
<1> gnufan: I've never used the amsn client myself, using ksirc or bitchx when I need these tools. So I'm not sure what it is she does with this application.
<4> Keith-BlindUser: Just recompile your kernel with the the speakup patch. :)
<12> rublind: that's good. for more fun, try cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
<19> but no one is ever in the agnula channel
<9> hesco: I use GAIM for MSN messenger - but it isn't great
<7> rublind: it should work then, the thinkpad does have crystal chips for the sound
<20> ogami1972: isn't agnula discontinued
<20> ?
<2> shingouz: yeah, it does.
<2> strider: I don't hear anything.
<18> Of course--a hardware synthesizer would have to be connected to a serial port or something. Too bad Speakup doesn't yet support USB synthesizers, but the reason why a software synth couldn't be used to isntall Debian is mainly because the software synthesizers work in conjunction with other software.
<4> rublind: cat any file to /dev/dsp
<2> OfficeChair: I don't hear anything,.
<1> gnufan: I had offered her gaim based on the hype. She kept insisting that we install windows for her. I told her I would do so if she produced licensed install media. It still comes up from time to time, but I think she has learned to use and appreciate the tools she does have.
<5> I never got the point of those debian-based distros "for audio". everything "for audio" is in sarge.
<21> how can if find out what channell a user is in if i no their nick
<4> rublind: Get a WAV off the World Wide Web.
<22> vipersniper: /whois but that doesn't always work
<4> lazzarello: Agreed.
<2> OfficeChair: not as easy as it sounds, but okay.
<5> it'd be funny to offer a "for audio" debian distro that was the sarge installer and a dselect --get-selections file :)
<4> lazzarello: I don't get the point of any of the Debian derivatives, except maybe a live CD.
<21> Ronin, nope just says he's on freenode ;)
<7> rublind: of course, if you want to have your hair standing on end, you could cat /dev/random to the /dev/dsp but that will sound awful..... :P
<22> vipersniper: like i said doesnt always work as theres settings to get around that
<7> rublind: in other words: don't
<23> Hi, anybody know how to mount an NT share under debian? (I'm under a domain which works also as workgroup too, using an username and p***word, and I know the path in WIndows, but not in linux neither the commands)... someone knows? :)
<2> shingouz: yeah, that didn't wor, so good thing.
<5> !tell RedDrag0n about mount
<24> RedDrag0n: mount -t cifs...
<18> Debian sounds amazing-- of course, I'm wondering if the volenteers here are willing to help people that may have more questions then a regular sighted user? I happen to be completely blind- and have to rely on a screen reader, wich means that the only tool for me to use is the keyboared, and thus I may be slower at typing partickular commands-what with reviewing text, having to scrol, etc.
<2> shingouz: aw, come on, who doesn't need a good wake up call...
<24> or smbfs
<4> rublind: altavista
<21> Ronin, is there some other command
<7> RedDrag0n: smbmount
<5> Keith-BlindUser, debconf can use a plain text menu for a screen reader, AFAIK
<18> Being blind seems to have some advantages, but sometimes it can really ****.
<7> rublind: i know of nicer ways to wake up :)
