<0> elnovato: don't use the non-freeone, use the free one
<1> dn4: on your computer? through the internet?
<2> tarzeau: you mean, use the packages via apt?
<3> kevix, yes
<1> dn4: which one?
<4> dn4: most protocols don't use encryption
<5> dn4: you can only encrypt something and hope it is still useful if the other side is able to decrypt it. So if you want your IRC messages to be encrypted all the way to the server, the server needs to support that. No, freenode does not.
<4> dn4: with no provision for encryption even if you wanted
<3> I suspect this is a question as to what type of enceryption to use, not sure which one.
<3> kevix, through the internet :) but the question was already answered by poli
<3> last question, is there a good website out there that shows a gui of all the Root DNS servers branches ?
<6> hello all
<6> I am not able to use joystick as a normel user ... i was wondering if there is a games group or something ... the device is /dev/input/js0
<7> dn4: that makes no sense
<7> v3: getent group
<3> SimonRaven, I mean I want to see a gui of the network they have under their hierarchy.

<8> kevix: just return fr reading 'man'. still doubtful about 'mv'. i will have to mv dir by dir?
<7> do you know what gui means?
<3> graphical user interface
<6> SimonRaven: tnx that's a nice command ....
<2> tarzeau: what is the name of the package for ati drivers?
<4> dn4: why do you want to know? root-server-hacking-101?
<6> what else does it do ?
<9> mozi: use the --recursive option
<3> lots of questions with out answers are a buzzin in my brain.
<6> never mind i will look up the manpage ;)
<4> dn4: ask questions with likely meaningful answers. or, put another way, what do the operators of root servers have to gain by making this tool for you?
<4> dn4: don't you think they have enough to do?
<2> !tell me about ati drivers
<7> yes. do you know what you're saying? there is no such thing. do you mean an illustration or some sort of picture of this?
<7> dn4: yes, but you need to think about those questions first
<1> dn4: using gnu/linux does that....
<8> Paivakil: no --recursive or -r in mv.
<10> Ohp, idea: I would like to collect data in the realm of "What Windows users want / Objections to switching to Linux that need to be addressed". I have seen one person with wiki pages on this. Is there some centralized group I should collaborate with, or just go off and do some stuff?
<2> this drivers here, http://stanchina.net/~flavio/debian-official/fglrx-driver.html are compatible with xorg 6.9 ??
<1> mozi: then make the files into a tar archive. then move the tar archive, then untar.
<11> tonyyarusso: #debian sure ain't the place for that. None of us care what windows users think.
<12> hello. is there a doc somewhere that can shed some light on the /dev/snd mess ? I'm getting quite bored of all those spurious "device busy" errors and sound randomly working or not working...
<1> tonyyarusso: in a word: thinking.
<3> eeyore-, yes root server operators have enough to do and giving a gui of a vast network system would help inform me on a visual level as to what they have to deal with.
<1> [6502]: have you tried alsaconfig ?
<10> Guerin: But don't you care about promoting Linux, and recognize that most of those not using it are currently using Windows?
<7> tonyyarusso: there are a lot of social and psychological pressures in this "issue". you can't just sum it up really easily without coming at it from all angles possible
<13> tonyyarusso, marketshare is overrated.
<3> eeyore-, the gain is minimal if any though.
<8> kevix: space problem. the current partition has >6GB of stuff and only 160MB left, probably not enough to hold the tar file.
<11> tonyyarusso: people need to change for their own reasons. I'm not interested in evangelising.
<10> SimonRaven: True, but there's only so much you can do. Open to suggestion if you have extra things I should do.
<11> tonyyarusso: the fact is that most of the things windows users think they want will most likely never be available in free software - they want windows.
<1> mozi: there are ways to tar stuff from one machine to another...
<12> kevix: i didin't try anything, but i really can't understand what should i try to do. i'm using a debian sarge with kde and i thought that artsd is the sound manager (there are two processes with that name that sometimes appear as lsof /dev/snd)
<10> sep: Not rating anything based on market share, just noting it as a base point.
<7> tonyyarusso: christians evangelise. nothing. people have their own reasons. i'm not interested in prosyletising
<10> Guerin: Okay; to each his own.
<8> kevix: in that case rsync can be considered too?
<12> kevix: i'm simply totally confused... sometimes vlc works, sometimes just crashes with an error on the sound device. no way to use timidity now but i rememner i heard it playing a few days ago...
<12> kevis: now /dev/snd simply isn't present
<1> mozi: there are many ways. make a script to copy the files one by one, use rsync, use tar, ...
<14> tonyyarusso: I really hate to do this but just to satisfy your curiosity: I moved to debian without seeing any advertising of it around.
<1> [6502]: what kind of sound card to you have?
<14> that's what attracted me most
<8> kevix: ok. btw, what's a kewl geek?
<10> Azar: Okay, but why? What was your impulse or draw otherwise? What sorts of things made you consider it initially, and then turned curiosity into a significant decision to switch?
<1> tonyyarusso: look at what ubuntu is doing.. they want to evangelize.
<10> kevix: Yes, that's true.
<14> tonyyarusso: call it "hate of overadvertising"
<12> kevix: hmmm... do you mean what dmesg says ? i never looked at it. the konsole buzzs when i backspace too much so i'm pretty sure the sound hw is working more than properly
<1> [6502]: yes. lspci or dmesg
<10> Azar: Okay. Is that the only thing?
<2> significant to switch?? huh, i use both, depends on customer, diferent scope
<14> tonyyarusso: I do not use the telephone, I rarely watch TV I do not go movies, I do not listen to the radio: reason: advertisments make me puke
<1> mozi: huh. you are using gnu/linux and you dont know what a geek is. that would be any body here!
<12> kevix: Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 1.01, 09:49:29 Aug 17 2005
<12> kevix: i810: SiS 7012 found at IO 0xb400 and 0xb800, MEM 0x0000 and 0x0000, IRQ 21
<13> Azar, the adblock extension integrated in a copple of shades... would be nice :)

<8> kevix: i mean a 'kewl geek'.
<10> Azar: And yet you can manage to connect to the internet and be one of the few that avoids it. Impressive.
<8> kevix: the adjective 'kewl'.
<15> !opera
<16> it has been said that opera is a commercial web browser for Linux/Windows and other OSes. Version 6 for Linux is out and debs are available on the download page at http://www.opera.com/download/linux.html or at 'deb http://www.opera.com/debian potato non-free', or that deb line is reported to be maybe broken. go poke around the site. go full screen mode and right click> show menu bar> [and avoid the ads] damn nice browser, especially under the hood. ...
<14> tonyyarusso: last I checked, the internet was not made by a mega advertisment corporation
<1> mozi: i'm sure wikipedia would have a better answer than me!
<14> tonyyarusso: if you refer to a browser, check links and you will know how I surf
<4> that explains it
<8> kevix: is it supposed to be 'cool'?
<10> Azar: No, but it has certainly had m***ive sections of it invaded by them.
<4> without a paycheck, how are you gonna get a phone, own a TV, or go to the movies
<14> tonyyarusso: try to surf with "links"
<1> tonyyarusso: why aren't you mom, dad, neighbors using gnu/linux ?
<10> eeyore-: Very carefully.
<13> after installing vmware-tools. mkinitrd failes with FATAL modules not found. with a broken initrd as a result the reason seam to be the modules vmware-tools installes in /lib/modules/(uname -r)/misc/ becouse if i rm that directory (misc) mkinitrd works as expected. how can i have the vmware-modules in /lib/modules/ and still have mkinitrd function ? is it wort writing a bug about this. or will it just be ignored since vmware is propritary ?
<10> Azar: I have actually, and elinks and w3m. Some good stuff there.
<14> yep at least I am spared of popups and images
<4> vmware has an installation script that makes modules
<12> kevix: dpkg -l | grep alsa spits nothing....
<11> alsa modules don't have 'alsa' in them
<13> eeyore-, yes exactly and after you'v made the modules mkinitrd failes
<2> sep: you should try #vmware
<10> kevix: Mom and dad are starting to get into it slowly. One computer at home with it. Both said they'd try installing dual-boot with their laptops, but want me to do the installation, so that will have to happen when I'm over there and have the time.
<13> elnovato, this is a issue with mkinitrd dieing on tainted modules i dont think it's related to what module it is.
<1> tonyyarusso: there hope for you yet!
<12> s/installed/installer
<10> kevix: Seems that way. Just a matter of how much, right?
<14> dualboot is like "quit smoking too much" just half pack/day
<12> 0823... time to run to work
<12> kevix: thanx for your time anyway
<12> kevix: i'll fight with that tonight
<10> Azar: Yes, but some people just need to "quit in their own way, quit at their own pace".
<1> [6502]: never used one of those intel sound thingy.
<11> tonyyarusso: translation: not really quit at all.
<17> Morning
<17> Is it possisble that a perl script can make my whole server go down and crash? The perl is huge, its something called "hlstatsx"
<1> Guerin: if you dont understand the 'freedom' thing, then you dont see the need to quit.
<10> Guerin: Depends on the person.
<12> kevix: the HW is working... the mess is IMO at an higher level, but i cant find a doc that recaps all the competing ultimate solutions in that area
<1> [6502]: I just recall killing esd and then the other apps had sound.
<10> Guerin: A lot of the people I talk to about Linux know absolutely nothing about it - don't even comprehend the concept - but after seeing it and working with it for a little while start to realize that it's not all scary stuff and they can actually handle it.
<18> I've got some dependencies problems with testing
<18> I can't upgrade udev unless I upgrade the kernel, and I can't upgrade the kernel until I upgrade
<1> [6502]: sound like a douglas adams idea.
<18> upgrade udev
<10> kevix: Well, freedom or just money. Was talking to some others about the total cost to upgrade to Vista soon, since it will likely require buying the new software along with m***ive hardware upgrades to support it.
<18> apt-get -f install doesn't help
<17> Is it possisble that a perl script can make my whole server go down and crash? The perl is huge, its something called "hlstatsx"
<18> should I just force install udev?
<1> tonyyarusso: bill love to spend your money on supporting the HW folks!
<10> kevix: Yep.
<1> DeeJay: it seems so if your asking.
<1> tonyyarusso: and adding DRM in the process!
<17> kevix even if the script is beeing run under a non-root user?
<14> the vole trustworthy computing is just a farce... I am glad I moved to Debian, at least I am more in touch and learning more about my system than ever
<1> DeeJay: use 'top' if it uses all the memory... why not.
<19> DeeJay, maybe it causes you internet connection to go down, but the server will be fine
<18> actually... it looks like the kernel upgraded fine already
<17> The server is crashing, for sure
<18> just that udev wants the currently running kernel to be newer
<18> I'll reboot then :)
<20> any eta on amarok 1.4 in unstable?
<18> bye bye
<7> bleaked: #debian-kde
<20> SimonRaven. they never answer.
<20> SimonRaven. i always try there first.
<2> dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of fglrx-driver: fglrx-driver depends on xserver-xorg (<< 6.8.99); however: Version of xserver-xorg on system is 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4.
<16> elnovato: that's too long
