<0> Where can I get a list of the options you can p*** to the kernel in the grub menu.lst ? <1> Don't want to go messing with real packages now do I ;) <2> RobHu: in append= ? <3> RobHu, in the kernel docs <4> can compile <4> help please <1> RobHu: I don't think there is a definitive list outside of kernel source code :( <4> cant <2> parameters.txt <0> parameters? <2> and the driver's source code <5> this problem seems like a bit of a nightmare, should i revert to my previous kernel or should i try and fix the current one? <5> What you guys think? <0> ah found parameters.txt - thanks guys <1> RobHu: collective wisdom here (and the kernel list) always found one to solve my problems -- whats up
<6> jnc, failed again! :( There must be something in the tar that makes the kernel refer to /dev/sda5 as a reiserfs, hence the "unknown block" panic. Something other than fstab, o course... <7> mythicness, try both <0> gnufan: I have a Tyan Thunder K8SRE mobo (also called the s2891) and the onboard BCM5704 nics dont work. I've googled all day, played with the bios and in the end looked at the driver source. It doesnt know the memory address (the driver says can't find PCI base memory address). lspci -v says that the memory address is <unknown>. I've tried all kinds of combinations of ACPI and APIC to noavail <8> ''compiling wine... go grab a lunch or two, rent a movie, whatever.'' Heh. <9> How do I find out my hwaddress? <9> For my ethernet card <10> lspci ... i think <0> Miesco: lspci -v <9> Thanks! <0> Miesco: You might need to apt-get install pcitools <1> RobHu: probably a good time to read the driver notes in the kernel source -- ***uming you know which driver. <0> gnufan: That doesn't really help... but the fact that even without the driver loaded lspci says the memory address is unknown suggests to me its a problem unrelated to the driver <7> why to get a mobo with no no linux documentation anyway <7> RobHu, I doubt youre the only one with the problem if you google ?? <11> which package provides "killall" ? <9> RobHu: Dont you mean pcitutils? <0> Miesco: maybe <9> lspci -v doesn't show the hwaddress.. <12> brb people... <0> Miesco: try -vv <0> Martiini: It would seem I am <7> RobHu, how old are that model mobos then? <9> RobHu: Still doesn't say it <0> Martiini: It's been around for about 2-3 years <8> How would I roll back my gcc to 3.3? <0> Miesco: Sorry - I thought that woudl do it <1> freeone3000: depends what for -- maybe "export GCC=gcc-3.3" is enough -- depended what you are trying to do <8> gnufan: Compile something using gcc version 3.3 as opposed to 4.0.1, using makefiles. <3> freeone3000, make CC=gcc-3.3 <1> freeone3000: if they are debian makefiles I think the GCC env var ia respected -- failing that just link gcc to gcc-3.3 with "ln". <13> grrr... got a strange problem with a router...has a web server on it, everything on the local lan is very sluggish to retrieve info from it. Everthing on the internet retrieves info fast any ideas? <1> RobHu: sorry felt desparate need to degrease my mouse mat. Did you try disabling ACPI, and the PCI interrupt route stuff? Did you try more than one kernel? <14> Hey folks. I want to buy new (or recent) laptop to run deb on BUT I need modem support. Do most laptops still use win-modems? <3> zebalin4, indeed <13> one thing that is a bit out of the ordinary for me....is im using 10.0.0.0 subnet. which, i would not think it would have any effect on the speed of transmission <1> grendal_prime: is the webserver using a public IP address? <13> on the outside yes <14> damn. So I have to fight 'driver' wars? <1> grendal_prime: so do the internal clients have their own DNS view? Or does the router have to forward their packets from local lan to local lan? <3> zebalin4, yes <15> zebalin4, or get a pcmcia modem that IS supported <14> Will deb work with most/all pcmcia modem cards (the ones that have a controler)? Saw one at Frys for $60 by Zoom.. said it worked with Win and Mac. <13> ive tried addressing the machine by the domain name and the internal ip ither way..very slow...ummm gnufan there own dns views..(im ***uming that you mean have i set them to see the dns servers of the isp as opposed to the router handleing it?) <14> gentgeen__: how do you know what pcmcia modems are supported... before you buy the card? <0> gnufan: I've tried 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. Binary ones from debian and custom compiled ones :( I've played with acpi and the pci interrupt route things all day but there are a lot of options I've seen from google and without any idea of what I should really be doing its a bit of a combinatorial explosion <1> grendal_prime: I meant by dns view that the name of the webserver resolve to 10.x.y.z on the client PC. <15> zebalin4, I would install the pcmcia packages, then browse them... <14> gentgeen__: browse them....how? <0> gnufan: Might I need to compile something to make the PCI-X bridge in it work or something? <0> gnufan: In the kernel I mean <1> grendal_prime: also is there some sort of reverse DNS lookup on clients -- shouldn't be, but maybe odd setting in "hosts.allow" could require reverse lookup or some such <15> and/or stick with brands that tend to work with linux to begin with. USRobtics comes to mind <15> I don't ahve a working Debian laptop any more (laptop keyboard died)... but I think in /etc/pcmcia/XXXX <14> gentgeen__: does USR make a card? I thought they only made stand-alone modems? <15> where XXX is wireless.opts for wireless cards, or such <13> gnufan, well, do you mean , do i have the hosts file set as mydomainname 10.0.0.1 in the clients host file? because no i dont. I was just hitting it with the internal ip address <1> Robhu -- me I'd probably stick another network card in their and Google till I found the answer -- not clever but I like to make progress whilst I whittle away at the intractable problems. <15> I have a USR 33.6 pcmcia modem card right here :) <13> certainly somethign i could try <16> nscd installation is giving me an error. "initscript nscd, action "start" failed" I've tried removing, purging, reinstalling. any ideas?
<17> i just installed etch on here and i am having a problem: every time i copy files (be it between hard drives or even to my USB mp3 player) the entire system slows to a crawl.. to the point that the mouse stops moving.. can anyone point me in the right direction here? <14> gentgeen__: cool. What do those things cost these days? Any idea? <15> send me an sase and you can have this one :) <15> it is only 33.6 (instead of 56) but your welcome to it <14> gentgeen__: well first I need to buy the laptop... but I might take you up on the offer... but I'd want to pay you something for it. <13> zebalin4, i have a dell 1100, actually two of them i take care of. tried three different pcmcia/mini modems, none of them worked... wound up with a pcmcia modem/cellular modem that works great with it. <1> grendal_prime: if the Internel IP address works and is slow -- I'd suspect the reverse DNS being called in somewhere. Can the server go from client IP to name. Usually easiest with web servers is to see if it logs the name in the access log (or enable that for logging). <15> zebalin4, one less thing in my house would be enough payment :) I am here most all the time... just note down my username for later <0> gnufan: I have another network card in :P I'm now trying to fix this problem <14> grendal_prime: hmmmm. Looks like I'll have to do a lot of research to either find a pcmcia card or a driver for whatever lap I buy (it will be a cheap one.) <13> this laptop gets shut down and fired back up twice a day, have had it around 2 yearrs now. no a single problem with it. <1> grendal_prime: or just add an entry in /etc/hosts on the server for the client you are testing from. <13> and. i use it for work, take it home and use it for home <14> gentgeen__: ok, I've done that. 33K is fast enough as I'll only use it when I travel to someplace w/o broadband. <18> My laptop's power is completely stuffed. <17> anyone:( <13> gnufan, like... client1 10.0.0.3 <14> oogy: how are you doing the copy? cp or via kde or what? <13> on the server? <14> oogy: how bit are the files? <14> *big <15> zebalin4, one thing to note, the older the laptop, the better chance linux support is there (***uming not TOO old) <19> has anyone been able to use the csua.berkeley.edu/linux server for apt lately or did they shut it off <1> grendal_prime: yes - worth a try if it isn't there.. <13> ill try that. unfortunatly i have to drive there and turn all the machines back on today...hella nasty lightning yesterday so i shut them all down from remote. <14> gentgeen__: won't help me as I'll probably get the $500 cheap Dell Insperion. I just need it for travel. <13> and i dont trust the staff to turn anything back on <17> zebalin4: big files, mp3s usually.. it also happens when i'm getting binaries off newsgroups via pan.. i do use kde yes, i'm copying from konsole from my hda1 to my usb <13> ill let you know how it turns out though..thanks <9> Is there a console program for ACPI that checks the battery status? <17> its actually WORSE in other desktop environments.. my computer slows even worse under gnome or fluxbox which makes no sense <14> oogy: best to do big copies from a termial window via cp. KDE often chokes on large file copy/moves. <17> zebalin: thats what i do.. <17> and it still kills my machine <13> Miesco, cat /dev/proc/battery...or some **** like that <1> RobHu: whats the exact error from lspci? <13> or is it just /proc/ i cant remember... <17> it seems that whatever transfers over 400k/s really bog the whole system down whether they're internal or from the internet.. any fast file transfers <14> oogy: how big a file are we talking about? <17> just a 4 meg mp3 <0> gnufan: Memory at <ignored> (64-bit, non-prefetchable) <14> oogy: have you tried the 4 mb cp from one dir to another.... as opposed to the USB. Maybe the USB is closing down? <9> grendal_prime: But I want a program, I dont know what thoughs numbers mena <11> what app do i dpkg-reconfigure to set my keymap / <11> ? <17> its not so big a deal transfering files on my system, but when it bogs down because of downloading files from the internet it really does start to get annoying <17> zebalin: its not just usb, its any transfer anywhere.. from hd to hd, on the same hd, doesnt matter <17> from the network, wherever <20> oogy: is DMA on the HD turned off perhaps? <14> oogy: how much ram/swap you have? Is this a laptop? What are machine specs? <1> RobHu: does it say they are unknown devices? <0> gnufan: No, they're the network cards <0> gnufan: One sec... <17> its a p4 2.0 512.. <17> how do i check swap is it supposed to be in df <0> gnufan: http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/hDNkTg79.html <20> oogy: free <17> i kind of autopilot installed this a couple days ago i shoulda paid more attention i suppose <17> Swap: 481908 153588 328320 <21> Anyone know of any software you can use to make music in linux <17> so 500 meg swap yea <20> k31th: Are you looking for a tracker, a notation editor, a mixing/editing program, or what? <21> \amethyst: mixer and some thing i can build some beats with <22> oogy, DMA is your first bet. hdparm /dev/hda or whatever your disk is called <22> oogy, with those specs, it should fly.. <1> RobHu: do you have a " 1644 NetXtreme BCM5700 Gigabit Ethernet" line in /usr/share/misc/pci.ids <17> yea its odd <17> i have a 633 celeron that runs better than this thing <17> using_dma = on <23> oogy: if it's a mobile p4 make sure it's running at full speed <17> its just a desktop <24> i just dist-upgraded a postfix mailserver from woody to sarge and sasl authentication doesn't work anymore. is this a known problem? <22> oogy, what is the load? <17> 3 year old dell
