<0> well just make sure you have a wireless module to compile first. you would also need gcc installed and kernel headers, but you can download that off p.d.o
<0> then apt-get update and apt-get install * and you're done
<1> ok, wish me luck
<2> Is anyone else having trouble with segfaults in /usr/bin/install when running "make install"?
<3> I just installed debian on a new computer. X won't start, it says: Fatal Server Error: No screens found. Does anybody know what problem this is?
<4> hi, I installed debian on a headless box and I'm trying to use xemacs remotely with X forwarding, all that works, execpt the fonts look absolutely terrible, what can I do to fix this? I have courier selected which looks just fine on the xemacs running on the X server box, could anti-aliasing be off on the headless box or something?
<0> the x server isnt configured properly, jsmidt
<2> jsmidt: What version of Debian?
<0> xorg or xfree86?
<3> I tried etch, that didn't work, so then I tried unstable and that didn't work either
<0> dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg|xserver-xfree86
<0> then make sure that you have the right modules and stuff
<0> and the right frequencies and res and stuff like that
<3> thanks ajdlinux I'll give it a try
<4> I'm using unstable and I don't have any xserver installed
<0> youre welcome

<0> apt-get install x-window-system-core
<3> How do you know if you have the right modules?
<0> what brand of videocard do you have?
<3> I'm not sure
<0> if you arent sure use vesa its nearly guaranteed to work
<0> but it looks crap
<3> thanks again
<0> also do you have windows on there?
<4> are corefonts no longer available on debian?
<5> Bonkers do you have xfs running?
<6> Bonkers: they're in nonfree
<3> I do not have windows
<0> try knoppix or something - you'll be able to find out your card
<4> hmm, what's it called? I have non-free in my sources
<6> Bonkers: you'll also need x-ttcidfont-conf
<4> shogunx: don't think so
<6> Bonkers: msttcorefonts
<0> vesa only has something like 800x600 and crap like that
<4> I have x-ttcidfont-conf
<6> ajdlinux: VESA goes up to very high resolutions
<0> depends
<5> Bonkers oh, sorry. ssh X forwarding. i was thinking of xdmcp.
<6> ajdlinux: It's just that some cards don't support very interesting VESA modes
<0> exactly
<0> like most of my cards
<6> ajdlinux: Not my fault you bought a **** card, fag
<6> ajdlinux: Whoops
<6> ajdlinux: I remember too late this isn't EFnet.
<4> shogunx: ya, I'd ***ume it uses the xfs on the server
<0> lspci or lshal should help you determine your video card
<6> Bonkers: Emacs has its own font server. I'm not kidding.
<6> Bonkers: err, it's own font format.
<4> heh, it's possible
<0> lspci - look for a line saying VGA compatible controller and find your brand, then use dpkg-reconfigure to set the X module for your card
<4> I've got all the same config files though on this new box
<4> I think this xemacs actually uses gtk2
<4> how do I make sure gtk2 stuff have antialiased fonts on debian?
<0> i hate gtk2 configuration
<4> which util should I start hating first?
<0> what utils?
<4> having to do with gtk2 font configuraiton
<0> there are no obvious utils with gtk
<4> I remember seeing a program once that had some font config stuff for gtk2
<0> gnome maybe??
<0> apt-cache search fonts | grep gtk
<4> nah, never had gnome installed
<4> ya, that didn't find anything
<7> apt-cache search gtk|grep fonts
<0> gtkfontsel??
<4> I think that's for gtk1.2, it just pulled that in as a dep
<4> but that's just a font picker
<0> hmmm - that's the problem with gtk
<0> i know the tool you need - nano or vi or emacs or kwrite or gedit
<0> i much prefer kde
<4> you know what, I bet I have the 'free' truetype without the hinting
<0> which font are you trying?
<0> i tend to use bitstream
<4> some courier font
<4> do I have to pull freetype from non-free somehow though?
<0> freetype?
<8> freetype is configured to use the bytecode interpreter.

<0> btw *free*type
<4> Deek: can I verify that somehow?
<8> Bonkers: Unnecessary; it is.
<4> ajdlinux: yes, but there is a patent on ttf hinting
<4> Deek, did the patent expire or something?
<8> Bonkers: no
<4> I'm just trying to figure out why these fonts look like crap
<0> what gtk program?
<0> i'm using kde with really good antialiasing and i dont have any nonfree
<4> http://terrapin.shacknet.nu/xemacs.png
<4> look at the 'Copyright' word specifically, it's really bad
<8> The xorg "built-in" freetype doesn't use the interpreter.
<0> what's bad about it?
<0> bte
<0> sorry
<0> btw i'm using xorg 6.9 from backports
<4> that doesn't look horrid to you?
<0> why should it?
<8> That means that XLFD (bitmapped) TT fonts look like crap.
<8> The solution is to use a font server.
<4> http://terrapin.shacknet.nu/xemacs-good.png
<0> oh i see now
<4> Deek, would the font server be on the server or the client side?
<0> what do you mean?
<0> install it on your own pc
<4> this is running over x forwarding
<8> It runs on the X server.
<0> server i would guess
<8> well, it talks to the X server.
<4> that's what I figured, those shots were taken on the same box
<3> dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg says it doesn't recognise my video card, lspci -v says my card is: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. Mobil Integrated graphics controller(rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
<4> do I need xfs on the client also?
<8> no
<2> jsmidt: does the VESA driver work?
<4> the only different in the shots is one running remotely one running locally
<3> how do I run the vesa driver?
<0> jsmidt: try i810 or similar
<2> jsmidt: select it when you configure x
<3> thanks
<4> Deek, it certainly does look like bitmapped fonts, but why would it choose those?
<8> Bonkers: That's not the only difference, they're using different fonts.
<0> jsmidt: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
<4> Deek: it claims to be using the same fonts
<4> or at least trying
<8> One is courier, one is arial
<8> err, courier new
<8> The crappy-looking one is Courier New.
<4> "Font -*-Courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" that's what it claims
<4> maybe it's not available and defaulting to something close
<8> Just look at "* scratch *"
<8> or whatever.
<8> You can tell they're different fonts.
<4> you sure it's just not crappy bitmap scaling?
<8> Impossible.
<0> hmm
<7> I have a PAL DVD iso from europe that I downloaded, and I mounted it, mount -o loop blah.iso blah/; and I cd blah, and I play it like so... "mplayer dvd:// -fs -slang en -dvd-device ./" .. my laptop is an American laptop (toshiba, with an ATI Mobolity 7000, and I am using xorg 7, and the floss "ati" driver that comes with xorg,(my card isn't supported by fglrx). So the movie plays and all, except there is a 1cm black strip, on the left and right
<7> How can I get rid of this black strip on the left and right side?
<4> Deek: but you still think it looks like bitmapped fonts?
<8> It's obviously bitmapped.
<7> mplayer dvd:// -fs -slang en -aspect 16/9 -dvd-device ./; The movie plays, and I can see it good, the strip isn't that bad...but it just bothers me. I'm not familiar with NTSC/PAL and how to get rid of it, anyone have any idea?
<4> only in the bad case, so how do I convince it not to use bitmapped fonts?
<9> unstable: some movies have those strps, esp. if they're using a weird aspect ratio
<8> Bonkers: They're _all_ bitmaps.
<4> truetype fonts don't come from scaled bitmaps
<0> try right clicking on mplayer and changing the ratio
<4> unstable: try -zoomxy <xres of your screen>
<8> There is not a single AA character in either screen shot.
<4> doesn't mean it has to be bitmapped though
<8> Yes it does.
<10> unstable: try something simpler and see if it works. mplayer -slang en /path/to/mount/point
<8> Scalable fonts are rasterized to either bitmaps or pixmaps.
<4> well in the end
<4> but bitmapped fonts normally mean they start and end their life as bitmaps
<4> and look truly crappy because of it, they just scale the same bitmap to different sizes, they don't use bezier curves and stuff like tt fonts
