<0> Sebulba03: Well get a machine with a great clock internal and use that.
<1> well, things like java runtimes and adobe flash player (the proprietary one), do you know if they aren't really packaged[1] because of restrictions on 'copying'? [1] i know.
<2> blondie: because we all make ***umptions, and you should expect that
<3> blondie: can you please refrain from talking about gay etc. in here?
<4> kspath: it worked before I put in the new harddrive, which required a new debian install and later kernel.
<5> ScoobyD00: not much point guessing, just try what works and what does not
<1> Sebulba03: could be a dead cmos battery
<2> coywolf: what do you mean? codecs for Real streams?
<0> Sebulba03: so you do not remember or understand how your machine was syncing time because of a new harddrive?
<5> ScoobyD00: 2.6.8 kernel defenitely is older than apr 2005 though, i guess
<4> kspath: I've read the script on how it was syncing the time. /etc/rc.d/hwclockfirst.sh , heck, I've tried to debug it
<4> So I do understand it.
<6> chealer, yes, and to play .rm file
<0> Sebulba03: tedp has a good point that hardware failure might be a problem
<2> !tell coywolf about real codecs
<4> kspath: but if I run `hwclock` right after the system boots... it returns the correct time.

<7> hi guys
<4> it's just the init script isn't syncing the system clock properly, for some reason
<7> can anyone tell me how to get the total size of a directory in bash ?
<3> branneman: du -
<3> eh, du -s
<8> du -s directory
<3> that includes subdirectories, though
<0> Sebulba03: I think you might want to define your time problem like that next time. Your are concerned about your hardware clock matching up with your timezone which might be called syncing but MOST people when talking of syncing are concerned with syncing with the rest of the world because most clocks in most computers ****.
<7> yes, ok tnx
<9> sigh
<4> kspath: yeah, sorry, I made ***umptions I shouldn't have
<9> I've changed the defkeymap.kmap.gz for "string F12", but it still sends its original value even after logging out - does anyone know how to fix this?
<0> Sebulba03: everyone else did as well.
<6> do we have http://security.debian.org/ sid ?
<6> do we have http://security.debian.org/ sid/updates ?
<10> no
<11> security.debian.org for stable distribution
<6> etch is testing
<4> kspath: yeah, well, I'm at a loss as to how the init script doesn't work at boot time but works afterwards.
<12> coywolf: yes... :p
<0> Sebulba03: Is it logging an issue? Have you thought about delaying your hwclockfirst.sh until after anything remotely hardware related is completely done?
<0> Sebulba03: note it can not log an issue until after syslogd starts ***uming it would log via syslog
<4> kspath: every now and then it says "System clock was not was not updated at this time", but that's not consistant.. possibly due to the syslog
<0> Sebulba03: also it would log the "wrong" time
<4> kspath: which looking at the script, suggests the timezone can't be retrieved
<6> Tygrys, so testing also has security.debian supported? blondie
<0> Sebulba03: Perhaps you should step through your init
<0> Sebulba03: are you using raid or other?
<0> Sebulba03: forget that last question
<4> no
<6> aries:~# gpg --armor --export 1F41B907
<6> gpg: WARNING: nothing exported
<0> Sebulba03: I DOUBT that you would be running init scripts without being able to see /etc yet.
<0> Sebulba03: what kind of system is that?
<4> kspath: dell inspiron 8500
<13> buenas
<0> Sebulba03: I still think you might consider stepping through your start scripts
<4> kspath: that's what I'll do
<14> i i cant start a gedit from root shell
<4> kspath: I need to get it logging al the time though
<14> xhost + dont work
<15> can somebody help me with this: http://pastebin.com/659515 , i want to save all users who have ./psybnc process started , then restart server and start from save file....i am stuck
<14> can you help?
<6> why the key doesn't work
<6> why nothing exported
<0> Sebulba03: well when your system is first booting up it does not have enough system to support syslogd yet. That is why there is an order to start scripts.
<4> kspath: yeah, the /var lvm isn't mounted until after the clock script is run
<0> Sebulba03: also udp is lossy and if your system is VERY VERY executing start scripts which I kind of doubt than it might not start syslogd fast enough or timeout before it can log it all.
<16> whitch package is requiret to boot debian and install with apt-get? now i have removed all packages from system after command 'aptitude install syslogd', but system now is working...
<0> Sebulba03: Well in a sense that made sense because you want it to log the correct timestamps BUT that means it might fail and not log via syslogd to /var/
<4> kspath: correct, it does.
<0> Sebulba03: That is why as root/sysadmin you can change whatever you want but you get to keep the pieces if it breaks.
<16> also all kernels is removed :(
<4> kspath: heh, yeah, I've learned that one enough times
<0> Sebulba03: I hope I helped rather than hurt or confused
<4> kspath: ultimatly I knew I'd probably have to dig into the bash script and debug it. I was just checking/hoping that maybe an existing issue has been seen before I spent all the time doing that.
<17> I fixed my gksu problem from before. The fix was: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.bugs.general/77879
<17> what program provides gnome-volume-control?
<18> gnome-media
<17> thank you
<16> whitch is better testing or unstable for desktop user ?

<3> xordali: stable or testing
<18> testing, unstable is a crashtest
<17> unstable is great :D, but no way is it suitable for a new user
<19> !sid faq
<20> rumour has it, sid faq is http://wooledge.org/~greg/sidfaq.html
<0> unstable is unstable that is why it is called sid/unstable
<16> azeem, now i use testing, but after 'aptitude install syslogd' it remove all packages.... :( at the moment i manualy install eatch package... :(
<16> aptitute remove about 2000 packages :(
<3> xordali: don't run upgrades if they remove a lot of packages, that usually implies somethign is going wrong
<0> xordali: How did you install a system without syslogd? did you have syslog-ng or something else?
<21> !qotd0
<21> kspath: i think unstable is the wrong word
<0> I can see someone not wanted sysloging but seems odd
<21> kspath: and it doesn't cover all packages
<21> it's highly a) software b) maintainer dependant
<21> probably libraries, dependances on other software is also related to stability of software
<0> tarzeau: the things that most people whine about are often enough the things changing a lot and breaking a lot.
<21> kspath: people are different. different people whine different (not at all, louder than 10 other people)
<21> kspath: besides alot of changes have no relation to good or bad quality changes
<21> kspath: nor to breakage
<21> kspath: but maybe size of software
<22> i am trying to reconfigure xserver-xfree86, at one point its asking me to enter BUSid of the video card. i used 'lspci' but i am confused
<0> tarzeau: after I had vim break in testing I went back to stable fast
<3> woodland: just leave it empty
<21> kspath: i'm glad i don't use vim
<21> kspath: really it depends what sofwtare people use
<22> azeem: why empty
<17> is there a front-end to dpkg that will let me click on a .deb and install it?
<3> woodland: because in general you don't need to specify it
<21> kspath: it's interesting, maybe one should try to make a small number of groups of people using groups of software
<3> sonyman: no
<21> kspath: using the popcon statistics?
<16> how can i reinstall clean all system without reboot ???
<22> azeem: ok
<3> !reinstall
<20> it has been said that reinstall is COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l | awk '/^[hi]i/{print $2}' | xargs apt-get -y --reinstall install, or dpkg --get-selections > packages , then later, dpkg --set-selections < packages && apt-get install
<21> kspath: there'd probably be a gnome, kde, others group, and emacs, vim...
<23> sonyman, set your favorite file manager to run dpkg -i pkgname when you doubleclick on a .deb
<21> kspath: depicting the groups with different sized circles and overlapping each other would be fun, no?
<21> Eulex: ouch
<0> tarzeau: I purposely only use a very few packages beyond the base system so I can depend on even more stability
<21> Eulex: that's supposed to break badly. besides what about debs that need be installed together with other debs?
<17> Eulex, what will happen if it needs to run a configuration script?
<0> tarzeau: venn diagrams fun?
<21> kspath: i use quite some software, but not too many either. what's your dpkg -l | wc -l
<23> tarzeau & sonyman, oh, that's true.
<21> kspath: however i don't abandon software for stability
<24> If I expand an LVM2 partiton by adding a physical partition, do I then need to expand the ext3 file system that sits on top of it?
<0> tarzeau: fairly large, but I use only 2 wms vim "email app" and shell wterm/aterm sometimes a web browser that is it
<21> kspath: i get 934 from dpkg -l |wc -l
<0> ~1500
<21> kspath: i also use 2 wms and terminal.app, and a browser as well as mail and my favourite editor among quite a few games and tools
<25> Is it possible to ***ociate a file-type with a Wine program? I'm running sarge with KDE (wine 0.9.11)
<0> I have gnome and kde installed for testing things but I RARELY use them.
<26> how do i make eth1 come up automatically? i know i need to edit /etc/network/interfaces - i just forgot how i'm suppose to write it
<23> odla, man interfaces
<27> odla: auto eth1
<26> yes i had eth1 auto
<26> asg: thanks
<28> what's the correct way to add a user: useradd -m -p p***word username?
<3> doddy1984: adduser
<29> what is the less painful way to get back X org 6.9 after do an upgrade to X org 7.0?
<30> ccamacho: There's not one, really. One way would be to dpkg --purge the x11-common package, then make judicious use of snapshot.debian.net or your local apt cache.
<31> another pipe,please
<30> ccamacho: After you down grade, be sure to make appropriate "holds". Also, keep in mind that Synaptic doesn't generate real holds -- synaptic holds only apply to synaptic!
<3> |
<29> noooooooooo
<31> :)
<32> pipeline: couldn't one force apt to reinstall the versions it just upgraded.
<30> gnufan: That would be "making judicious use of the local apt cache"
<30> gnufan: Downgrading without a purge is a baaaaad idea.
<27> or don't run unstable
<29> damn
<30> ccamacho: actually, you could probably get away with just purging the xserver related stuff
