<0> does your router provide an internal net that's different from the IP(s) you get from the upstream router?
<1> nachoguy: niiice
<2> I used it yesterday though and no updates
<3> yes... unfortunatally, it says that it cannot obtain a DHCP ip from my router even though it is on a diffrent subnet
<1> nachoguy: dual gigabit ethernet on-board too, 6x ram slots, supports up to 12 gig
<4> bsims, or a lock file somewhere maybe ?
<5> abrotman: there are hundards of things in /dev/ - is there anyway to probe which are actually connected to something on the hardware side ?
<3> the university's lan is 172.16.11.* mine is 172.16.52.*
<6> orlock: sweet, not sure how much memory this board maxes out at, I just got it as a test rig from monarch
<7> there's any good cd/dvd reader and writer? i'm using gnome...
<0> shouldn't you be able to just use one of the ips in your local router's range?
<6> obscuresoul: k3b ?
<3> orlock: how much did that machine cost you?
<3> well
<3> i tried that
<3> i tried 172.16.11.72

<3> i mean 52.72
<3> not 11
<8> nadim: not a clue .. but i bet if you google for your controller and a howto .. you might get a hint
<4> obscuresoul, depends of what you want... juste burning some files or an iso, nautilus-cd-burner is great
<5> abrotman: had been doing that for the past 2 hours - nothing so far.
<2> nodens: tried that too fsck it ... I'll reboot I need to clean the cpu fan anyway
<0> so your local router denied the packets because it didn't ***ign the ip?
<3> yes...
<5> abrotman: thanks anyway - if you think of a channel or a URL to look into don't hesitate to let me know.
<4> but if you want to do complex stuf, maybe k3b is a better way to go
<8> nadim: maybe query #kernel about the device
<7> nodens: but k3b isn't it an kde app?
<7> s/an/a
<3> unfortunatally this network is kinda weird... it actually activly monitors all packets from the origin source
<9> 1;2c1;2c1;2c1;2c1;2c1;2c
<9> q
<4> obscuresoul, it doesn't prevent it from working in gnome, just a bit heavier :)
<3> and then authorizes depending on if it is from a valid MAC
<4> obscuresoul, that's why you should use nautilus-cd-burner when you only need simple stuff
<0> shouoldn't your local router be the mac it looks at?
<6> nadim, dmesg | less, and you should be able to find out what is where
<0> maybe you could put a linux router before the local one
<4> obscuresoul, it's just a matter of copy/paste in the CD/DVD burner location, file -> write, could not be easier
<10> when i look a movie, the screen turns BLACK, what is posible to are this thing if is not the screensaver and not is the "console blaking using apm (kernel)" ?
<11> How do I install iconsets for gnome?
<6> Thanatermesis: does it happen right away, or like 10 minutes into the movie?
<5> nachoguy: I see 'PDC20271' (the RAID card) listed, but it tells me nothing about what /dev/XXXXXX to use - want to see the relevant parts on #flood ?
<6> nadim: go for it
<11> how can I install icon sets for gnome
<12> abrotman: what about installing ubuntu ?
<7> nodens: does nautilus works with data only? or with music too?
<8> blurf: you'd have to ask #ubuntu
<5> nachoguy: so hde and hdg are supposed to be on that RAID - so what do I access in terms of /dev/XXX to get 'em ?
<4> obscuresoul, I don't think it can burn audio cd, there is gnome-baker for that but I don't like it very much
<13> nadim: /dev/md* or /dev/mapper/*
<6> are they seperate raids? or are they two disks that are supposed to be raid 1 or raid 0?
<13> nadim: oh, wait
<8> nadim: are you sure that promise controller is a true hardware raid device?
<13> nadim: You're using "software ***isted" RAID, not hardware RAID
<7> nodens: ok thank you a lot ;)
<13> nadim: Which is utter ****.
<13> nadim: The PDC-202xx series are really nice ATA controllers, in that they support 66 MHz PCI
<13> nadim: Their "RAID" functions are totally useless, though
<6> nadim: I think pipeline is correct
<6> you can use debian's raidtools to perform the raid though
<10> nachoguy yeah, 15 or 20 minutes maybe
<13> Heh, raidtools/mdadm RAID will actually perform a lot better than the "software ***isted" RAID on the card :P
<4> (ATA raid sux anyway)
<8> buy scsi!
<13> nodens: Not true, necessarily
<13> nodens: Enough cache will make anything rock.
<6> abrotman: naw, I can get 3-4 times the storage space by going sata/pata
<13> nodens: The problem is that performance doesn't really become comparable until we're talking like, miniature SANs.
<13> nachoguy: Heh, that's not really true
<5> nachoguy: I don't know much about 'em beyond the fact that tey are supposed to be hardware RAID.
<13> nachoguy: If you're willing to cut some corners, SCSI and FC-AL have comparable up-front costs to IDE
<13> nadim: They're not.
<5> pipeline: so what are they ?
<13> nachoguy: The catch is the ongoing cost: electricity.
<8> nachoguy: thanks .. i'll take SCSI any day
<0> isn't sata/pata == s/p?

<5> pipeline: or better yet - what is it ? :-)
<13> nadim: software-***isted RAID.
<4> pipeline, right, but then price is almost the same as scsi with a good ata raid controler :)
<5> pipeline: ah, so /dev/md0 is what I should be accessing ?
<6> 146 gig scsi drive 400 gig sata drive, buth in the $150-200 range
<13> nadim: No. You should abandon the stupid "software ***ist" raid and use software RAID alone.
<8> nachoguy: and guess which is faster :)
<5> pipeline: is the ***ist not useful ?
<5> pipeline: is it slower with that card in there ?
<6> abrotman: in my case, I'd rather have capacity than speed, at least for home use
<13> nachoguy, nodens : You can get SCSI and FC drives / controllers so cheap nowadays that the only concern is electricity. If I want 600G of storage, it's a lot cheaper to run three 200G ide drives than 15 73G SCSI drives.
<8> nachoguy: that's a case by case choice .. some would take pure speed .. depends on the needs
<13> nadim: Heh, the card itself is fine as an IDE controller. It's just worthless as a RAID controller.
<13> nadim: Software RAID is sometimes faster due to reduced interrupt load on the host processor
<13> nadim: Not to mention, software RAID lets you do a lot more :P
<6> Thanatermesis: anything come up in system logs or dmesg when it happens?
<13> nadim: Those Promise cards just have a software RAID program loaded into a ROM on the card.
<13> nadim: to let you boot
<4> I wonder if linux lvm can do mirror ? in hp-ux software raid is done that way
<5> pipeline: so by me accessing /dev/md0 I'm not using that card - and am doing software RAID, right ?
<6> lvm can do lots of neat tricks that make my head hurt
<6> nadim: once you set it up, yes
<13> nadim: Well, you hav eto set it up first.
<13> nodens: It can, but it's inadvisable.
<0> then you should either take a tylenol or not use lvm...
<6> yacc_: it's more like reading the docs, so I just don't read them
<5> nachoguy: how do I set it up - what should I read on this and will this card interfere ? And while on the topic what should I buy as a "true" hardware RAID hard for these IDE drives ?
<13> nodens: There used to be a plan to merge md into LVM HPUX-style, but it hasn't really materialized, and the dm modes that do RAID are really, really poorly tested.
<14> I have a script in /etc/init.d/startup ... and I made a symlink to the file in /etc/rc2.d/ ... but the script does not start when I startup my system. The script is supposed to write to a file and it doesn't do that. .. any ideas?
<3> thanks for your help
<8> get scsi!
<0> truthfully I haven't read those either yet
<4> pipeline, ok.
<4> I've got my answer :)
<13> nodens: So yes, you can, but you shouldn't :P
<5> my /proc/mdstat notes 'md0 : active raid1 hde1[1]' - which I'd think tells me I'm not doing RAID
<13> nadim: Heh, looks like you only have one disk in teh array.
<15> Tenemag: do you know the best place to get varsion 1.5 or 1.7 of Ndiswrapper, those wwere the two i heard that work with my card
<10> nachoguy good question... no idea :/
<10> but im sure to abrotman knows about this thing ;)
<5> pipeline: out of curiosity - so I have a piece of crap for a hardware-***ist RAID, how do I get it to work (again looking to learn)
<10> when i look a movie, the screen turns BLACK, what is posible to are this thing if is not the screensaver and not is the "console blaking using apm (kernel)" ? <--- abrotman ;)
<13> nadim: Find a howto about raidtools
<8> !dmps
<14> I have a script in /etc/init.d/startup ... and I made a symlink to the file in /etc/rc2.d/ ... but the script does not start when I startup my system. The script is supposed to write to a file and it doesn't do that. .. any ideas? Is this the best way to have a script ran on startup? I just want to run 2 commands on startup ... err.
<8> !dpms
<6> nadim: http://www.jochem.name/Debian-Sarge-Raid1-mdadm That's where I went for info when I set one up a while ago
<16> i heard dpms is know as VESA Power Saving or Energy Star. In X4.0.X add Option "DPMS" "on" to config monitor setting. After that it can be configured by using 'xset dpms <standby-sec> <suspend-sec> <off-sec>' or config file options (ServerFlag section).
<13> nadim: And it's a perfectly good IDE controller. A very nice one, really.
<13> nadim: mdadm is also good :P
<13> nadim: Actually, you can use the debian sarge installer to set up software RAID at install time.
<4> ok, it's late here, I'd better go to sleep if I cannot fix Xorg. 'night people
<13> nadim: You just set some partitions to "software RAID" or "md" or something, and the option to configure software RAID will appear.
<5> pipeline: mdadm is sofware RAID and it won't engage the crappy Promise card - will raidtools engage that card ?
<13> nadim: Of course not. Why would you want to do that?
<5> pipeline: well it was enageged in the previous kernel (since the drives were being written into and Software raid per se wasnt' enabled) - I'm looking to learn as to how to replicate that (just for grins) on 2.6.8
<13> nadim: I wouldn't even know how
<17> is the new version out yet with all the updated packages ?
<8> new version of WHAT?
<5> pipeline: so you'd recommend I throw this promise card and replace it with a scsi connector to my 2 IDE drives ?
<8> oh yes .. that will be fun :)
<17> debian silly :p
<8> oh .. i forgot </sarcasm>
<8> XenReborn: you mean of sarge? or has etch released?
<5> pipeline: btw - what will happen if I setup/enable software RAID and both drives already have data on 'em (which most likley aren't fully sync'ed-up after 3 days of new kernel usage) ?
<17> ok before i rephrase lemme ask somnething..
<17> if i download the debian cd, and install it, of sarge, and run dselect using apt, it downloads a whole ****load of updates, are these updates technically part of sarge ?
<8> ***uming your sources are correct
<17> ftp.debian.org
<17> can't get anymore correct :p
<8> that wasn't what i meant
<17> ..ok
<17> what do you mean ?
<10> :/
