<0> WillieDaPimp, do not use the .deb skype provides, download the static binary, and then expand it, and then use ./skype or something to launch it
<1> OT: you might want to run smartctl on the drive if you suspect hw errors
<0> WillieDaPimp, ime thats the only way I got skype to work
<2> !repeat

<4> haha williedapimp
<5> Dwonis, yeah, the oss stuff... also caused me troubles... found out it was easier to just close all other devices...
<4> WillieDaPimp: recognize me?
<4> ;)
<6> stoned i'm not exactly sure what you mean by that...but i tried and got this error >> Package libstdc++5 is not installed.
<7> jelly-ho: It's direct under init in the pstree, that does mean init started it, right?
<8> ick: no.
<9> elik: yeah. I'm not running KDE or anything (though sometimes I run artsd for Kopete), so that's what I did as well. It's really annoying, though.
<6> thingfish, hrmm....i don't know, should i know you?
<0> WillieDaPimp, then install it
<5> Dwonis, it is

<7> jelly-ho: then what does it mean? And how am I going to find out how to kill the program that started it?
<8> ick: it could be just that the process which started it finished itself, in which case init becomes the parent.
<9> elik: same goes with the stupid Flash plugin via Crossover plugin
<5> yeah, on the same forum :P
<7> jelly-ho: like screen?
<4> WillieDaPimp: tsk your nick is a zappa song (off 'Hot Rats'); mine is a zappa album. You should know this.
<7> jelly-ho: nm
<9> people say that free and proprietary software can co-exist... I might agree if the proprietary stuff wasn't always dragging behind
<0> WillieDaPimp, http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-static <-- this will download the file. use tar jxvf and extract it, cd to where it was extracted, and then run it with ./skype or whatever the binary name is. If it complains about needing some libs, install them with apt-get install, or first search what you need by apt-cache search
<6> thingfish, oh yes i did notice that, but i thought you were saying that i knew you from somewhere
<0> my nick is from.. uhh...
<4> WillieDaPimp: oh ok, good. ;)
<0> hehe
<9> VMware seems to be the only piece of proprietary software that I have that isn't total crap... and even it still only supports OSS
<7> Dwonis: how do I kill artsd such that it doesn't come back? Not a problem one has on Windows.
<10> so far which is the top few chosen web appliance for webhosting that has least exploits or is very active ?
<0> ick, killall -9 artsd
<9> ick: I dunno. I manually run artsd in my .xsession (since I'm not running KDE), so when I kill it, it stays dead
<0> ick, then turn it off in kcontrol
<9> ick: as an alternative, you could try "artsshell suspend" and hope that nothing tries using it
<5> jelly-ho, hum... no 1280x800 resolution... only 1280-960 or 1280x1024 (std...)
<0> ick, use kcontrol to turn it off.
<11> is it okay to get rid of /usr/src/linux-OLDVERSION* ?
<7> stoned: I installed kcontrol for that purpose and it does NOT work.
<6> thingfish, not many of us zappa fans still around IRC, i used to be a member of a zappa channel back in 91' when i was on irc.xworld.org, but the owner of the channel p***ed away about a year or two ago, he did all of frank's cd re-mastereing
<8> elik: you mean in debconf dialog? that's normal. Choose anything, I think I chose 1024x768.
<0> ick, if it stays off in kcontrol, AND you killed all artsd processes, it will not come back
<5> jelly-ho, ?? ok, and what happens next?
<12> I apt-get installed istanbul; and I try to run it in a terminal by typing "istanbul" and it just doesn't run. It just hangs. How can I figure out what is wrong? /var/log/messages shows nothing
<0> processes dont magically start/stop
<7> stoned: I did that, and it does not work.
<0> well then thats strange
<7> stoned: More precisely: I "disabled the sound system"
<9> ick: is artsd running as another user?
<0> ick, killall -9 artsd && ps auxf|grep arts
<8> elik: start X, and complain if it doesn't show up in native res. ;-)
<7> stoned: nm, I did it as root, not as normal user.
<13> unstable: strace
<5> jelly-ho, i'll just ctrl-alt-backspace it... see you in a few
<0> heh, the u flag did it for ya ;)
<9> heh. it just occurred to me that some people still run X sessions as root
<0> heh
<9> I haven't done that in ages
<14> I wish i could update to the 8.25.18 ati drivers :(
<7> stoned: nope, it doesn't work.
<9> ick: Does artsd have a parent process?
<7> Dwonis: init
<0> !ppid
<3> [ppid] Parent Process ID, or to find the ppid of a pid, run "ps -O%P pid"
<12> abrotman: Are you on sid ?
<9> ick: Is artsd actually *dying* (i.e. is it getting a new pid)?
<7> Dwonis: 4991 1 R ? 00:00:55 /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessag
<0> ick, may I suggest #kde, the arts people
<7> Dwonis: It gets a new pid
<12> Can someone running sid; apt-get install istanbul; and confirm it won't run. So I know before I file a bug report
<8> ick: did you disable it in kcontrol?
<7> jelly-ho: yes
<9> ick: I dunno, then. Nag #kde
<5> jelly-ho :(
<5> jelly-ho, same fat resolution (stretched)

<8> ick: yeah, I'm out of options too.
<9> ick: well, or you could slay your X session and replace it with ratpoison or something
<0> hehe
<0> ratpoison
<13> unstable: no .. i'm smarter than that
<8> elik: oh. does /var/log/Xorg.0.log mention 1280x800 at all?
<5> !beer abrotman
<0> abrotman, no you're not
<0> ;)
<7> Dwonis: well, I think I will kill X then... but this doesn't look like it works correctly.... :(
<5> jelly-ho, it wouldnt... as I'm in Xfree ;)
<8> elik: I have, between other things, (II) I810(0): PanelID returned panel resolution : 1280x800
<13> unstable: does strace give any outpout >?
<7> Dwonis: Debian is not perfect
<0> debian IS pececttion!!
<8> elik: whatever, XFree86.0.log then :-F
<0> *ahem*
<9> stoned: heh
<5> jelly-ho, where is it?
<15> how long will it take to fix the tightvncserver package?
<8> elik: /var/log/XFree86.0.log
<0> oh my keyboard ****s
<8> elik: could be the old X don't detect the hardware that well.
<14> I have 2 sound cards in my system, on board and a Creative Audigy 7.1 card. They both work but the onboard card seams to be the defualt one to load in linux. When i reboot sometimes and i use alsamixer, onboard is the one it only alows me to edit the creative is not there. I have to do a alsaconf and select my creative card to get it working and then i have to reajust all the volume settings. This is a pain in the butt considering i reb
<14> oot alot with other problems im working on. anyone have any suggestions ?
<5> jelly-ho, brb, will just read the 1451 lines :P
<0> sirius, alsaconf and select the card to use
<8> elik: paste it somewhere.
<8> elik: /msg dpkg paster
<14> stoned: i have to do that every time i reboot if you read
<0> no
<0> I don't see it
<0> where did you say it?
<0> oh
<14> well i guess i didnt well i have to do that every time i reboot
<8> elik: also the /etc/X11/XFree86Config-4 (sp?) might be useful.
<12> abrotman: http://pastebin.com/703478
<12> abrotman: The package apt-get installed properly. no errors. Just doesn't start properly.(at all)
<0> hah, xchat screwed up on me, 2nd half of your sentence was blank
<14> o
<0> I had to switch to another tab and then back and it fixed it
<5> jelly-ho, http://channels.debian.net/paste/2815
<13> unstable: looks like a dependency is missing
<14> well i just need to know if there is a way to stop having to do alsaconf all the time
<5> jelly-ho, but now not sure I have the 1024x800 entry as I ran the configuration
<12> abrotman: pygtk?
<0> sirius, I've never looked that deeply into alsa and how it works. sorry
<13> unstable: eh .. not sure yet
<14> k]
<0> sirius, there has to be a config somewhere
<13> !find strop.py sid
<0> sirius, dpkg -L alsa etc.
<0> sirius, grep for conf
<8> elik: you still use vesa driver?
<12> abrotman: apt-file search strop.py shows nothing
<5> jelly-ho, here is the config file, 1024x800 and the modeline are the stuff I added http://channels.debian.net/paste/2816.
<15> how do you get dpkg to tell you why something isn't in testing?
<8> it found mode for 1280x800 though.
<8> elik: seems it found mode for 1280x800 though.
<13> unstable: did you run apt-file update first?
<5> jelly-ho, ??? really, I just rerun the config and supposedly overwrote my old config file
<12> abrotman: yes
<5> jelly-ho, well, it wont show up in the gnome resolution chooser
<16> can you install kde as a binary package under debian as well as other packages, without compiling sources
<8> elik: I'm looking at the log file, haven't seen the config yet.
<0> Chroni, apt-get install kde-core
<0> Chroni, or just kde
<13> unstable: strop.* ?
<5> jelly-ho... it restarted with my old config file...
<17> !beer /me
<5> jelly-ho, it didnt take what I did with dpkg-reconfigure..
<13> !info instanbul sid
