<0> I just installed a fresh Debian 3.1 sarge off the netinst CD. Unfortunately I had to wrestle with some weird Force-LoopBreak thing for e2fsprogs but I got it installing things from apt with a bare system, now. What 'stub' package can I apt-get install to get the equivalent of selecting "Desktop Environment" when selecting packages from the installer?
<1> Does Cedega Work well on Debian ?
<2> did anyone have got the same bug?
<3> Mutiny: tasksel could maybe help, I think thats the program that calls the potion you are looking for.
<3> !tell Mutiny about tasksel
<4> jjazz, ok, i'm running the installer for realtec from the realtek website, and its still not finding my sound card
<5> _slack- man sudo
<4> can i get some help with audio, how do i get debian and alsaconf to find my video card
<6> dudes in the update last night (testing) my laptop mouse became really slow, i use fluxbox ad DM and if i try gnome the same happens, does anyones knows which conf file do i have to check in order to restore the original mouse speed?
<6> s/ad/as
<4> !codec
<7> Sivik: did you figure out what sound card you have?
<4> jjazz: no, still trying to, can't find it
<7> Sivik: ok
<4> jjazz, this is all i can find, Complies with AC'97 Rev 2.3 specifications
<7> Sivik: I can't help you, sorry.

<8> i was trying to get an ac97 to work yesterday for about six hours
<9> what happened?
<9> :s
<4> jjazz: its a ALC850
<8> i gave up and installed another card
<8> :)
<10> !ac97
<11> There's no universal driver for every single motherboard that uses ac97 audio. ac97 is just the codec, you need a driver for your audio chip. For OSS, this is usually either i810_audio or via82cxxx_audio; for ALSA, it's usually one of snd-intel8x0 (see also <intel8x0>), snd-au8810 or snd-via82xx. Use lspci to check.
<4> beardy, already trying that, the alsaconf still doesn't find the audio card when i run the ./install from the package from reaktek
<4> realtek*
<8> i found an old soundcard buried in my file cabinet
<4> gavagai, thats the thing, i don't have any other sound cards
<12> does someone have an account on a debian system without root permissions?
<4> gavagai, i have never needed more than whats on the mobo
<4> tarzeau, who are you talking to?
<13> tarzeau: I have both.
<12> m0rbid: well i need people with only user rights
<12> Sivik: anyone in here
<13> oh
<4> tarzeau: thats very easy
<3> tarzeau: Yes. Stable or what?
<13> I dont get it... I have a normal user account too...
<13> IS BECAUSE IM GREEN EH!?
<3> Dont we all have that? =)
<14> has anyone installed amavisd-new 2.3 on sarge?
<13> he thinks I will cheat with an 'su'
<3> !anyone
<11> Please do not ask if anyone uses <someprogram>. Instead, ask your real question. (If the real question _was_ "does anyone use <someprogram>?" ask me about <popcon> instead.) See <ask> <sicco> <ask-to-ask> <polls>
<15> what is the setup command in Debian ?
<13> power
<12> widrone: anything
<13> (on)
<15> what is the setup command in Debian ??
<1> sid: you still there ?
<10> tarzeau: Don't you?
<16> Anyone running a 3com USR hardware 5910/2977 modem?
<14> ok, so my real question is: how do i get past amavisd-new dependency problem of libcompress-zlib-perl???
<17> hi, where can i find the patchset of Firefox 1.5 (diff from the original source which mozilla.org provides to the version Debian provides)?
<15> what is the setup command in Debian ?? help me plz
<18> sirius: yes
<10> JackUTR: Setup for what? Be specific.
<10> JackUTR: What are you trying to do?
<14> without resorting to testing or unstable
<17> ah nm http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/f/firefox/firefox_1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.4-1.diff.gz is the URL
<17> or seems to be it :)
<12> beardy: no, i'm root on all systems i have access to :) well and those i don't are down :(
<19> how to resume a file got by scp ?
<4> has anyone gotten the realtek ALC850 to work
<12> m0dY: forget it
<10> tarzeau: But you have useraccounts on them aswell, why do you need a person with only a useraccount?
<1> sid: okay x failed to start ive had this prob before and if i remember right i have a ATI x800 and i had to get like somekind of firegl driver ?
<19> tarzeau: i did it a long time ago but totaly forgot what was the trick
<4> sirius: use a vesa driver
<15> beardy , i want active yum on server
<10> JackUTR: What is yum?
<12> beardy: it's just because i feel like it's useful for others too
<10> tarzeau: what is?
<12> beardy: apt-get that works for users
<10> (no I haven't paid attention)
<10> tarzeau: Ah, ok.
<1> Sivik: i want to be able to use my Ati 800 as much as i will be playing games on this machine is vesa good ?

<10> tarzeau: But to test it, why do you need others instead of yourself to test it on? :)
<3> tarzeau: Got some pretty clean xendomains Im playing with. Be happy to break either of them to test a usermode apt-get...
<14> any one for the dependency problem of amavis??????
<4> sirius: no, but vesa will work so you can work on getting the ati 3d acc to work
<4> !ait
<4> !ati
<11> wanna use newer ATI videocard in sarge? check out http://www.linuks.mine.nu/ati/ati.txt, or for etch/sid see <fglrx>
<12> beardy: it's tested :)
<3> tarzeau: I even managed to typo my way into a testing debootstrap on one of them.
<10> eoLit: One ? is enough. Is amavis packaged? What version of Debian are you running?
<12> widrone: you want to test it?
<4> sirus, "/msg dpkg ati
<1> Sivik: Thanks
<14> beardy: im using sarge, i've downloaded amavisd from volatile but it depends on zlib >=1.35
<18> sirius: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
<20> manpages part
<21> eoLit: what does "apt-cache policy ; apt-cache policy amavisd-new libcompress-zlib-perl" say? use a pastebin: /msg dpkg paster
<18> sirius: type that, and chose "vesa" as the driver.
<3> tarzeau: My /lastlog is broke, you got any info on what this is? Just a apt-get from regular user?
<12> widrone: yes
<22> i just got a debian sarge netinstall iso, and installed it - it came with kernal 2.4.27-2-368 - but i need a v.2.6-kernel - how do i update? apt-get update/apt-get distupdate doesnt work
<21> Neptune__: /msg dpkg sarge upgrade kernel
<16> :D /msg dpkg kernel?
<16> heheh
<16> ok so I'm getting closer
<23> i've run 'dpkg -i openssl_0.9.8b-2_i386.deb' which did not install due to unmet dependencies, yet i cannot do 'apt-get upgrade' because it still nags me about those unmet dependencies - how do i get out of this state?
<21> jkl-: apt-get -f install
<14> http://channels.debian.net/paste/2777
<23> stew: you sure? i DONT want to install it actually
<21> jkl-: you don't want to install the dependencies?
<24> !poop
<3> tarzeau: Sure, shoot! The system is just bootstrapped, nothing exciting in there yet anyway.
<25> Where Debian keeps its /etc/fonts dir?
<23> Stew: not really
<21> jkl-: then dpkg -r openssl_0.9.8b
<23> stew: i'd just like to "undo" this command
<1> sid: it never asked me which driver i wanted to use
<21> jkl-: err dpkg -r openssl
<1> sid: dangit and apt-get is not working either lol
<21> eoLit: you don't have a main mirror
<23> stew: not working - as i have 0.9.8a installed
<4> !realtek
<11> from memory, realtek is a piece of crap chipset that fortunately is a lot better if you use the 8139too driver in 2.2.18 and 2.4.0 instead of rtl8139. a chip that has a pretty high server load while transmitting data. very cheap and common as an embedded ethernet controller, or http://freebsd.active-venture.com/FreeBSD-srctree/newsrc/pci/if_rl.c.html
<23> stew: with 0.9.8a installed i wanted to try install 0.9.8b and it came with this dependency circle
<14> stew: i commented it out for this install, guess i shouldn't have huh? :p
<21> eoLit: neither security nor volatile are full mirrors, they are only small subsets of packages
<1> sid, sivik: Says temporay failure in resolving ftp.debian.org when doing apt-get
<4> sirius: thats an issue with the server, not on your end
<18> sirius: Can you ping an ip
<4> sirius: just wait and do it again in a minitue
<18> sirius: Try to ping an ip inside the LAN, maybe dns isn't working.
<21> jkl-: you can try "apt-get install openssl=0.9.8a-2"
<14> stew: if i uncomment my main mirror, and apt-get install amavisd-new, it wants to install the ooooold 2003 version :S
<1> sid, sivik: says when i type ping 192.168.0.1 or 103 network unreachable, but when i was doing the install i was downloading files fine this time ?
<25> I have a strange error message in my log and I don't know what's causing it. I'm using flux 0.9.14 with gdm. The error message is: GConf server is not in use, shutting down.
<23> stew: seems to work! thx :)
<26> plp help! I'm with debian testing/unstable and use gnome. The problem is that 'top' tells me that gnome-panel use about 90% of my CPU resources and about 60% of my memmory. Can anyone help to solve this inconvenience?
<21> eoLit: volatile doesn't provide an amavisd-new package
<1> sid, sivik: also when i try to do ifdown eth1 it says eth1 not configured
<14> stew: ???? i've downloaded the .deb package from ftp2.de.debian.org !
<21> eoLit: what url?
<21> eoLit: http://volatile.debian.net/debian-volatile/dists/sarge/volatile/main/binary-i386/Packages <- that is the volatile package list afaik
<14> stew: umm, now im really lost :p what did i download? ftp2.de.debian.org is listed as a mirror
<21> eoLit: the apt-cache policy output you gave me before didnt' list your volatile as providing a amavisd-new version either
<1> stew, sid, sivik: says when i type ping 192.168.0.1 or 103 network unreachable, but when i was doing the install i was downloading files fine this time ?
<1> stew: also when i try to do ifdown eth1 it says eth1 not configured
<4> sirius: then their network is down
<21> eoLit: compare your pastebin to the output of "apt-cache policy amavisd-new" when you have a main mirror and you'll see what i mean,
<1> sivik: thats my network 192.168.0.1
<4> sirius: can you ping www.google.com or anything else?
<1> sivik: no
<4> sirius: ping 127.0.0.1
<21> sirius: how did you bring the eth1 interface up? with dhclient or ifconfig or something?
