<caracal> yay!
<caracal> quik__: congrats
<quik__> caracal: thanks for the help.
<caracal> welcome to debian ;)
<quik__> all others too
<quik__> ... I have a debian machine at work that I setup
<quik__> as a web dev server
<quik__> this is my home effort to ditch windows
<quik__> and use debian and mac osx only
<caracal> "debian been berry berry good to me"
<flowtron> I'm still stumped at my gdm issue. Nothing seems to explain or fix this. I just had this stupid disk in the box and now gdm always hangs. dpkg-reconfigure didn't fix, fsck brought up no errors ...
<caracal> since i first loaded slink, i've gone all-deb and haven't regretted it for an instant
<caracal> flowtron: no clues in any logs?
<flowtron> caracal : this is the first time linux is doing something I can't comprehend. I see no reason yet it repeatedly hangs if I start the gdm.
<flowtron> mmmh. logs. well. there's a point ;-) ... usually the first, eh
<caracal> worth checking, anyway
<saloxin> flowtron: disk full, broken X11 setup or somesuch
<caracal> like eg. /var/log/Xorg.0.log
<yage> I have a server connected to a switch monitor port, i'd like to create graphs to display for every server which kind of traffic (http, ftp, ssh) a machine does and keep history for last week, month and so on. I've seen ntop, but, i'm not fully satisfied, any idea?
<flowtron> saloxin : no.
<flowtron> saloxin : I just tested a HDD. it was broken
<flowtron> then I removed it but forgot to remove it from fstab
<flowtron> the next boot went bad, because of that
<flowtron> since then the issue
<flowtron> problem is I have to reboot to view logs
<flowtron> so everything is ... obfuscated. I'm doing a thorough search now
<caracal> the only way i can see that the HD would be involved is if gdm somehow picked up a pathname on it and cached it ... and i dunno why it would have done that ... my guess is, the HD problem and the gdm problem are related only by the timing of their occurrence
<caracal> but prowling the logs might yield clues (one can always hope!)
<fireba11> hm .. can anyone tell me why (or how to find out) kernel 2.4.27-386 works fine on this box while 2.6.8-2-686-smp won't and gives a kernel panic when i try to bott it ? it's a p4 2.4 so it should work .. ^^
<sep> fireba11, perhaps the 2.6's init'rd is lacking some module. what is the lines above the panic
<fireba11> sep: depends .. in regular mode it complains about quitting an important part .. in recovery mode i got another message .. sady i didn#t note them and it's a productive server so i can't jsut try again right now
<bykte> apt-get install is for installing stuff, what's the command for searching?
<fireba11> sep: will search logs for it, hang on
<darkpadden> apt-cache search
<bykte> ah ok thanks
<mae> what are some good webstat programs for use w/ apache i've looked at awstats and webstats
<_joey> could someone tell me what reiserfs version comes with sarge ?
<_joey> please :)
<flowtron> caracal : I've prowled. To no avail :(
<flowtron> mae : webalizer?
<caracal> flowtron: bummer ... i don't know much about gdm, so i'm afraid i can't give much help ... but your X is starting up okay? and gdm's logs don't show anything useful? can you increase his verbosity, turn on debugging, whatever?
<flowtron> no X isn't starting up okay.
<caracal> oh? what's the log say?
<flowtron> nothing that I could see
<flowtron> caracal : it sometimes shows 1/3, or even 2/3 of the logon screen
<flowtron> caracal : but mostly it hangs in the grey phase ...
<fireba11> sep: could it be there is no log about that failed boot because it quited with a kernel panic before done booting ?
<sep> fireba11, aye
<fireba11> sep: dang .. it was shortly after it detected 2 CPus though (HT)
<caracal> flowtron: well, that's not very useful, and it sounds like it's not even getting to the point of starting gdm ... what's the last thing in your Xorg.0.log? (or XFree86.0.log if you're still on xfree?)
<flowtron> still Xfree
<fireba11> sep: but i guess this doesn't help much ... think i'll have to try when the ppl are gone home and write doen the error message
<sep> fireba11, digital cameras is nice for logging kernel panics :)
<flowtron> mom. I can ssh into it from here.
<map_> has anyone else had gtk apps like firefox and xqf segfault randomly in unstable and/or testing recently?
<caracal> map_: no, thank garp <g>
<flowtron> caracal : fonts being removed from list
<caracal> flowtron: are there any "EE" lines in it?
<flowtron> caracal: no, that's what I went looking for before ...
<caracal> as in, grep EE XFree86.0.log (caps are important)
<flowtron> caracal : yeah. nothing
<caracal> ouch
<flowtron> well ... the one line of course
<flowtron> where it's explained :)
<caracal> ?
<flowtron> and one occurence of SCREEN :)
<fireba11> sep: true.. had no cam handy yesterday though :-')
<cybaspace> Good day y'all! Anyone experience with Tarantella v4.2 on Debian?
<flowtron> caracal : there is a line in the log explaining what the (..) lines mean, so - of course I find that one ...
<caracal> flowtron: ah, okay
<caracal> so do you have an XFree86.0.log.old in your /var/log directory? and if so, did you diff it with the current one?
<caracal> (as you may be able to tell, i'm grasping at straws here <g>)
<flowtron> caracal : the times differ ...
<flowtron> caracal : your my straw @ the moment :)
<caracal> and do you have a /var/log/gdm/:0.log file? (or more likely, that plus a .1, .2, etc.)
<flowtron> caracal : yes, but didn't see anything "unusual" there either
<caracal> and its datestamp makes sense, as in it was updated the last time you tried to start X?
<flowtron> caracal : yes
<flowtron> caracal : I'm guessing some important file got clobbered
<caracal> i guess reinstalling gdm is one thing to try, shouldn't be too impactive if you haven't customized the hell out of it
<lobz> hi, is there an apache-ant package available for sarge?
<flowtron> caracal : the Q is - how to fix without complete reinstall of gnome/gdm
<flowtron> caracal : haha. ok. if you're at a loss too
<caracal> well, while gdm is dependent on gnome, the reverse isn't true, iirc ... so you should be able to just do him
<jadawin`> hello
<caracal> the next thing i would try is to see if i could start XFree manually, and maybe an xterm, just to separate "X problems" from "gdm problems"
<klixe> hello jadawin
<weissi> flowtron & caracal: I did't listen completely to your conversation, but perhaps that helps you: `apt-get install --reinstall <package>` reinstalls a package, but you don't have to reinstall all its rdepends...
<caracal> i haven't used xdm or gdm for years ... at home, i don't restart often enough to make it worthwhile, so i just use startx *blush*
<caracal> weissi: that sounds cool ... if his problem is a borked config file, would that fix it? that is, does it do a --purge, in effect?
<klixe> Well my machine is so stable that I can't even remember how I started X.
<caracal> or would he need to mv /etc/X11/gdm to some other name, maybe?
<caracal> klixe: lol ... you da man <g>
<flowtron> caracal : sorry to tell you. it didn't really help
<flowtron> caracal & weissi : i removed and installed gdm
<caracal> we use gdm at work, but the admins handle it so i don't have to
<fireba11> sep: i will grab a digicam and get the kernel message later today and bug you again with it if you don't mind ;-)
<flowtron> caracl : now it complains about some gdm-theme missing, plays the "ahemm"-sound but still freezes up :(
<caracal> flowtron: i believe the technical term for your situation is "well and truly ****ed" ;)
<flowtron> caracal : yeah. Excuse me sir, is this a god damn?
<tijn> erhm
<weissi> caracal: I think it will ask wheater it should overwrite it with the original version or not (perhaps you could also append a --purge (don't know it))
<caracal> weissi: apparently he already did an uninstall and reinstall, and got no joy
<flowtron> weissi & caracal : thanks for the input. I'll just toy around some. I'll probably come back here l8r ...
<caracal> flowtron: good luck to you
<sep> fireba11, bug the channel since you never can know if im listening
<weissi> caracal: ok...
<flowtron> thanks
<s-toned> Is there a guide or recommendations about new hardware to buy for sarge?
<caracal> flowtron: me, i'd try to ensure that xfree was itself working, separately from gdm
<fireba11> sep: of course :-)
<sep> s-toned, hardware support in debian is directly provided by the kernel. so buy hardware that is well supported by the kernel 2.6.8 that means stay away from ich6-7 chipsets , or you must use a more recent kernel.
<klixe> There are more recent kernels availble at backports.org 2.6.15 I think.
<s-toned> sep: That is, I should look into the kernel-sources?
<s-toned> sep: I thought about something like linuxprinting.org or tuxmobil.org but for mainboards and VGA
<bykte> how can i check whether the apache installed on my debian is a common one or a custom-made?
<Guerin> bykte: dpkg -l |grep apache; which apachectl; similar tools
<klixe> bykte: perhaps compare the version to that on http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
<bykte> oh i see..
<bykte> 1.3.26
<iciclebox> in my log, I see "new high speed USB device using address 2". how do I refer to that USB device?
<iciclebox> ah never mind
<klixe> bykte: the version of apache you have seems old. If your running sarge with updates, you should probably have 1.3.33-6... or so.
<talamodet> started using udev on debian
<dr1v3r> guys whats the command to check the version of a package i have installed?
<talamodet> (hotplug removed)
<talamodet> and now my onboard network adapter isn't recognized
<talamodet> during bootup the link is stopped
<talamodet> and eth0 is no longer recognized as yukon 1gb controller
<talamodet> the firewire-ethernet card is the only one recognized
<caracal> dr1v3r: "dpkg -l packagename" is one way
<dr1v3r> thanks
<bykte> klixe, woody
<talamodet> it's during the udev scan that the link is taken down
<klixe> Man. Who still uses woody these days ;)
<Greatred> klixe, maybe they've not rebooted for a while :)
<caracal> dinosaurs <g>
<klixe> Maybe they found the computer in the closet.
<RichiH> ouchie
<erhanugur> flood :/
<Greatred> it could be that they want a stable system, woody already works etc.
<klixe> bykte: how about purging apache and reinstalling?
<RichiH> erhanugur: we are doing what we can
<kec> hi
<bykte> klixe, how do i do that?
<kec> i want to download debian cd images
<klixe> aptitude... hang on, you probably don't have that in woody...
<kec> from debian.org
<bykte> klixe, i really dont wish to install a LAMP package..
<kec> i have a pc
