<4> Are you recompiling it by hand? The last time I did that, I used Lilo and Yes, I just rebooted and it run. But if you dont use Lilo (you may be using Grub) then probably no, you have to reconfigure Grub to make it work.

<1> WindowsNoob: note that centos is built from RHEL, which has been tuned to expect certain things. if you rebuild the kernel, you'll have several things cease to function properly for you.
