<0> orc_orc: it's not like he has a job anymore <0> he'll have plenty of free time <1> mean. mean euclid <2> I'm sure google "linux lost root p***word" is nearly an empty search <0> I had to live with him, I'm allowed to be mean <1> donavan: yeah - the crackers were using that knowledge, so google blocked it <2> ahhh <2> rather poorly I'd guess Results 1 - 10 of about 2,440,000 for linux lost root p***word. <1> donavan: the pony wanted them to be able to find it <3> orc_orc, maybe you can try for a pony later <2> mean pony <2> euclid: best thing you ever did was buy your sister that stack of bibles to throw at Evolution <4> please how to make my server centos more secure (updates patches + kernel) cause i found a lot of info with google and nothing exact <1> adil452100: there are no exact instructions because circumstances vary <1> it is out of scope for IRC <4> ok
<5> simple answer "use selinux" <4> tell me what you do <4> you* <5> I use selinux. <1> adil452100: but we have documentation at: http://www.centos.org/docs/ to address the matter with you <4> but i don't know how to patch kernel <4> ??? <5> adil452100: you don't need to. <1> adil452100: /topic , to which I pointed you, in turn pointed to http://www.centos.org/irc/ <4> recently my server was hacked (last bug 14 july) + kernel issue <4> don't tell me that i don't need a kernel patch <1> adil452100: then you need a different OR <1> OS that is <5> adil452100: if you're using selinux, that won't happen. <5> you apparently are not, and you're also apparently not big on reading docs. <4> i disable it on install!! shouldn't i? <4> ok <5> that's your own fault then. <4> last question <5> don't blame software issues for your poor administration. <4> i'm a newbe and i'm here for help <5> that's a statement, not a question. <1> heh <4> don't want to help??? <5> adil452100: you're not following the channel rules, nor have you read the docs orc_orc pointed you to <5> there's no reason to help if you don't follow the rules. <1> adil452100: he was being a wiseacre -- but this channel is not for people who are not willing to read the three things I have mentioned <4> i want to ask but you cut off <1> Evolution: did you prevent adil452100 from typing by unvoicing him or her? <4> so i will not distrub another time <4> thank you anyway <4> have a nice ady <4> day <1> adil452100: it is not a disturbance -- the issue is you need to read a bit <4> where?? give me a link?? you don't see that my english is poor <4> i force to understand <6> adi: Google for selinux <4> so be a little kind <7> adil452100: such is linux <1> adil452100: no, your use of English as about as good as we see around here ;) <7> adil452100: the "i force ti understand" part (-: <8> who is compiling bind for CentOS 3.8 or 4.4 = <8> ? <4> selinux i know what it is and i read somewhere that cause mal function with apache mysql ... cause my server is a hosting one at home <8> I'd like to point one ugly and easy to fix bug :-) <1> bleve: hi <5> bleve: we know all about $USER :-P <8> file:///usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html <8> damn. <5> hehehe <4> so all i want to know is how can i update my server to increase security!! just "yum upgrade"??? <8> https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=202012 <8> that's it. <8> take comment mark out from #%patch1 line <4> or do i need something else <5> adil452100: yum update should be all you need. <8> orc_orc: without that fix rndc stop working for everybody. <1> adil452100: run updates; don't run unneeded services; configure iptables; audit with netstat; don't disable SELinux, rather find and fix the real issue <6> rndc is overrated anyway :-p <8> named initscript uses it.
<7> anything with an r in front is it is evil <8> so service named status gives failure every time... <1> bleve: a hallmark of careful testing ;) <8> again. <7> just do not use remote tools (besides ssh) <4> thank you very much ;) <4> have a nice day! :-) <1> adil452100: ;) <5> 4.4 seems to have some autofs ****age upstream..... <8> I don't know any other as critical component which gets so little testing. <8> evolution: exellent, autofs broken too? <7> blah nfs stay away <1> bleve: plenty gets poor critical testing - regressions are not watched for, and so random fubarage is rampant ;( <5> bleve: seems so. trying to nail down details right now <9> HI, how can I change the firefox language? I mean install it in spanish ie. <10> there is language extensions <10> go to "extras-> extensions" in the menue <5> Edit->Options->Advanced->Languages <5> I think <5> the language extensions should all be enabled by default <5> the options should let you change it. <9> Evolution, I added es-Es and remove English but it is still in english <5> g333k: NFI then. I only speak english <9> thanks anyway <11> Greetings! <9> I got it! I had to install the Locale Switcher extension..... http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/switch-locales/ <1> g333k: congratulations - feel free to document this knowledge in the Centos Forums <5> s/free/obligated/ <5> there. I fixed that for you. <5> :-P <1> ty Evolution -- are you available to work here next week? <5> hehe <5> 'maybe' I have to see what happens with our slaver contract :-P <5> "I cannot be fired. Slaves can only be bought/sold" <1> manumission happens <11> I've got a strange series of problems with CentOS 4.3 on a Dell PowerEdge 650. I ranted about software RAID1 and LVM2 not getting along earlier this week. <11> Now when I attempt to repartition and reformat the drives without LVM2, at boot, there's still a LVM VG signature on the drives. <11> Needless to say, the LVM at boot time sees this sig and lays down and dies. Kernel Panic! <11> I'm beginning to think that software RAID is evil except on virgin drives. <11> And it's still a bear with LVM2. <11> Anyone out there successfully running software RAID1 and LVM2 together without filesystem corruption? <11> Anyone out there successfully repartition drives formerly infested with LVM2 and get them to work properly? <2> TSWoodV: man dd <2> then use if=/dev/zero <2> wipe the entire drive(s) <11> donavan: Yeah, that's one way out. Why didn't the repartitioning get it? Where's the VG info stored? Boot sector? <2> still not sure your problem isn't your hardware <2> partitioning is only alter a few bytes in the MBR <11> I've done a lot of hardware swapping. This is on an identical server from the other day. <2> s//ing <11> It should be the responsibility of the partitioner to deal with this VG data, right? <2> since you likely repartitioned with the same partitioning scheme the old LVM is found <11> I'm really stumped with this one. I had the same issues with Ubuntu 6.06 as well. <11> donavan: Nope. Make sure I changed the partitioning around. That's what's got me *really* flabbergasted. <2> it still finds it because stuff starts at 1 <11> It seems that there's a larger problem here. I can't find any references to it lately, not since the fix that was found last year. <2> use dd <11> donavan: I get what you're saying about dd. But the partitioner should have cleared that out for me. This to my way of thinking is a bug. <2> anaconda is rather robust at finding existing lvm information <11> Well, it screwed up this time for me. <2> the partitioner alters _ONLY_ the MBR <11> Now, about bug reporting. How is bug reporting handled for CentOS? Since RH is upstream, does it make more sense to file the bug there? <11> donavan: Where's the VG info? In the MBR? If so, it should fix it. After all, anaconda and disk-druid created the VGs in the first place. It ought to be able to wipe them out as well. <2> sure, however, you'll have to keep the hardware out of service for weeks while they query you for random bits of information -- about anaconda back traces <2> the VG info is on the disk <2> not sure where <12> hi, i unpacked the .tar.gz phpmyadmin in /var/www/html but it shows the Apache 2 Test Page. how can i do in order to run phpmyadmin?? <5> jonhycap: simple. use the correct url <2> TSWoodV: you can try opening a ticket in RH's bugzilla <11> donavan: I've been through that as well...weeks and months. Had several bugs in bugzilla that were never looked at, then closed out during a big sweep. One was 30 months old and still was status NEW. <5> jonhycap: if you unpacked the tarball in /var/www/html/ then you likely have /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin-someversion/ <12> yes <2> TSWoodV: it is my understanding that you need to have a paying customer rattle their cage for open bugzilla tickets to get them to really look at them
