<0> fedora is a testing grounds. RHEL and centos are stable.
<0> however if you add a couple 3rd party repositories to centos and RHEL, they're nearly identical in the software available.
<0> it depends entirely on the task you want to accomplish.
<1> Evolution, thanks, thats what i'd like to know :) So centos and rh for stable servers and fedora for cutting edge one, isn't it ?
<0> kristalino: yes. if you'd read the last two documents we linked you to earlier. they say just exactly that.
<1> Evolution, not really they arent talking of centos _at all_ .
<0> kristalino: centos is built from the same source as rhel (stated in the first article you were pointed to) and is 100% binary compatible with RHEL. You'll also note that I reiterated in here that all arguements for RHEL hold true for centos, minus the customer support contracts, artwork, and pricetag.
<0> so it doesn't need to mention centos. the difference between centos and RHEL is dependent upon your need for support, and your willingness to pay for it.
<1> ok.
<0> Zerberus: since suse comes on 7 cds, that means its better right?
<0> er Zathrus
<0> hehehe
<2> I thought it was up to something absurd, like 10 CDs
<3> yes ... but with 5cds of source ...

<0> it's 5 or 6 isos to install, an iso of 'extras' type stuff, and the source.
<0> at least it was about 2 years ago when I looked at the SLES+netware beta
<3> Evolution : SLES 9 is 6 cds of binaries and the rest is sources
<2> opensuse (slightly different, I know) is 5 install, 1 addon
<0> Arrfab: yeah. then novell had a disk of the ported netware utilities (since we were migrating from a novell environment)
<0> all the zenworks/zenstudio stuff
<0> zenworks actually had some really pimp features.
<3> Evolution : zenworks is not included in SLES, only in OES ....
<0> ah.
<2> SLES10 appears to be 5 CDs as well
<4> do NOT SLES here, use a waste bin.
<3> range : i agree ... i had a problem last week just to configure a primary/secondary dns server on SLES9 and by default it refused zone transfer because he tried on ipv6 .... ;)
<5> hi anyone here have an idea on installing mod_perl2 via yum on centos 4.2
<5> Pl. help
<6> mod_perl 1.99, which i believe was a pre-released 2.0 is included with CentOS 4
<0> ejaincom: use the request tracker repository, and yum install. they packaged mod_perl2
<5> Evolution: how to change the repository to request tracker
<0> ejaincom: http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories
<5> evolution: They metion that i need to copy rt-3.4.x.repo to /etc/yum.repos.d/ and install. and install whats install ?
<0> install would be 'install mod_perl2'..... or were you expecting something else?
<5> oh... yes :)
<2> Evolution: liar. You left out a word.
<0> Zathrus: I didn't want to be accused of spoonhandling this early in the day :-P
<2> Evolution: why? You did yesterday! :P
<0> exactly!
<7> hi, is there a kernel image for large memory support?
<8> Bitz: yes
<2> Bitz: yes; look for hugemem
<7> does the default install support large memory?
<8> how large is large ?
<7> upto 64g
<8> or RAM ? what sort of a machine is this ?
<7> would that be the max?
<7> 64bit\
<8> 64bit what ?
<7> amd64
<7> system
<2> z00dax: don't start!
<8> Bitz: what machine is it ? what Mobo ?
<2> Bitz: for >16GB of system memory or >3GB/process memory you'll want the kernel with hugemem support
<2> and yes, it is provided
<7> ok, thanks
<8> not at install time, the installer wont work with that much of ram
<7> os, i have to upgrade the kernel image to hugemem after the install, right?
<8> no
<7> no, what do i need to do than?
<8> the installer will install the right kernel
<8> Bitz: what version of centos are you installing ?
<7> 4 or 4.1
<8> why an outdated insecure install ?
<7> what is the lastest?
<8> look at the channel topic
<8> I am still interested in knowning what Motherboard or what sort of a machine you are using
<7> unkown brand name, it an altus 1400 server from penguincomputing.com
<8> and what OS did they put in there ?
<7> preloaded with fc4
<8> the 1400 only does 16gb of ram
<7> i believe so.
<8> so where did you get the rest of the RAM from ?

<7> can i max the mem size on that system
<8> what does that mean "max the mem size"
<7> s/max/mix/
<8> ok, let me rephrase.
<7> it came with 6g
<8> what does that mean "mix the mem size"
<7> 6x1g
<7> can add 2x2g mem
<7> can i..
<7> so 1x6g and 2x2g for a total of 10g
<8> no clue :) maybe... depends on what the MoBo supports - I suppose thats a question you will need to ask the vendor who sold you the machine
<7> it has only 8 slots
<7> ok
<8> ony.... :) dont think I've seen a sinble board machine with more than 8
<9> the documentation that comes with the server should detail the memory configuration options available
<7> i don't have the doc
<2> that said, that system isn't likely to need hugemem support
<9> then get them online or contact penguincomputing
<10> the "penguincomputing" page for Altus 1400 server says: 8 DIMM slots for up to 16GB
<7> ok, thanks.
<8> Bitz: install 4.3, nothing older than that
<7> sure
<2> Twigathy: in theory 4GB modules (which don't really exist yet) could exceed that
<8> Zathrus: but the board needs to support those..
<2> z00dax: true; but it's _likely_ that's fixable with a BIOS update. Not certain; but likely.
<8> possibl
<11> is there a way to add repos without manually changing the repo files in yum.repos.d yourself? or maybe are repo files avail for download somewhere on the CentOS site? I'm a little hesitant about just copying the CentOS-Base.repo file and changing it to Extras.. and I don't want to use non-CentOS repos like kwhatever-Extras. I wanna use the official CentOS repos
<2> hillie: you drop new repo files in
<11> Zathrus, where can I get them from? I've only found 3rd party ones
<2> http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories
<4> Errmm.
<4> All *official* centos repos are in CentOS-Base.repo.
<4> Not all of them are enabled, though.
<2> correct
<12> Hi, I'm using Centos 4.3 with latest updates, there seems to be a serious bug with smbfs, when I mount the share it takes 30 seconds and everything is not accessible... I had a look and it seems this bug is unresolved, I find it a bit hard to believe the latest ver of redhat/centos cant mount shares so jus double checking its correct?
<2> haven't had those issues here; only time it takes awhile to mount a SMB share is if the drives the mount points to are spun down.
<4> You doing something wrong is out of the question? The logfiles (server/client) don't show anything?
<12> Jul 7 08:58:27 jakes kernel: smb_retry: no connection process
<12> Jul 7 08:58:57 jakes kernel: smb_add_request: request [ebc5be80, mid=0] timed out!
<12> Jul 7 08:58:57 jakes kernel: smb_delete_inode: could not close inode 2
<12> mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge,p***word=foobar //fjall/test /data/test
<12> bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1062
<12> smbclient works fine... cifs kinda works if u hack it for ages
<12> smbfs = broken
<13> hello
<8> jakes: dont paste stuff in here mate
<13> could somebody help me with configuring "mc" - the commander
<13> looks strange.. instead of lines, i got ""
<2> lehel: do you happen to be connecting to the system w/ putty?
<13> correct, i forgot to mention
<2> sec
<2> under putty settings, window->translation->"Received data ***umed to be in which character set" select UTF-8
<13> thanks Zathrus!
<13> that was it.
<2> np; figured that out when I was tired of man pages with strange characters.
<7> is there a centos forum or user group?
<8> Bitz: you are in it
<8> there are also a few mailing lists ( http://lists.centos.org ) and webforums at www.centos.org
<14> Any of you all know how to get rpmbuild to p*** a -j2 to make?
<2> there's a forum as well
<8> Dysk: yes
<15> hi
<8> jetway2008: hola
<15> is it possible to install centos from usb drive
<0> yes.
<15> i have a old laptop but the cd drive
<8> yes, anything is possible. if you throw enough money and time at it
<15> doesnt work
<8> network installed!
<0> "yes it does"
<15> i am trying to install asterisk
<0> really.. who didn't see that answer coming...
<15> but i have no idea with centos
