<14> how about: using a more conservative installer that looks for a hard drive to use via stable drivers and then TELLING YOU that it didn't find one and THEN prompting you for drivers, rather than prompting you for something you don't know you need yet and then punishing you later by hanging and not telling you why.

<17> My new hard drive (WD 320gb 16mb sata2) produces a low 'hum' that is more pronounced than my other HDDs. you can feel some vibration in my desk even. Is this possibly an unbalanced hard drive or is it because the drive has 3 platters maybe?
