<8> hrm..anyone have a HD "repair" program they can reccomend? Not recovering files, but doing formatting and **** <8> I seem to recall something being mentioned in here <5> Uhmmm... SpinRite? <9> anybody here good with installing routers and want to help me out? <10> how do i convert fat32 to ntfs? <11> BLAH <12> morning bb <11> Sup bofh, how goes things <12> just drinking coffee, watching spidey 2. you? <11> Popped out to the airport to get some stuff... damn I wish I had this speed at home, I really do :D <12> heh <12> bah, this dvd is bad or I need to clean dvd player. or boht <11> I vote for boht <12> heh <12> suspect the dvd. as it's a burned copy, and fact that I had no issues with player yesterday. course, have also never cleaned player in years I"ve had it. :) <12> hrmmm, need to clean out my file drawer sometime. maybe take out fales that don't apply anymore and put them in a box somewhere <11> Yeah, those things are typically just a crock for the most part <11> Considering you're never supposed to touch the lens *at all with anything* I'd say anything like a disc with some kind of brush on it... go figure <12> heh, yeah <12> though I will admit the cd ones used to work well for me <11> Bleh... knew I forgot something, I never tweaked the TCP stuff on this lappy when I redid it with 2K3... hehe, brb <13> hey guys im installing Xp on a SATA II HDD and its Hanging at the 39 minutes to go..you hear of this before? <14> yes <14> you need to make sure your SATA drivers are loaded from disk before the install process gets going <14> XP installer hates SATA <12> it's not the drivers, or wouldn't have gotten to minute count at all <12> as that's already copied files to disk <12> besides, XP doesn't hate sata at all, just crappy sata/sata raid <14> there seems to be a very few non-"crappy sata" then, since everyone i've ever heard of who tried to install XP on a SATA system had problems with it <12> maybe they're all idiots then. and the intel ich5/ich6 sata works jsut fine. won't help if the person is a moron though, and that's not something XP can control <15> hi all <15> someone here experienced a NETbios problem running old DOS games for network multiplayer <14> bofh``, no, they're not idiots. they're all IT professionals for whom i have a fair amount of respect. <12> that's nice, doesn't mean they're not idiots <12> http://www.centos.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=127 perfect example of IT professional who's an idiot <12> and a good laugh <14> well the idiots had trouble as well, but the people i'm talking about, imho, are not idiots <14> that guy is the city manager, not an IT guy. and yes, he's an idiot. <12> too hard for them to hit F6, ey? <14> the people i'm talking about are a lot smarter than that <14> bofh``, the point is that the XP installer just HANGS instead of providing some useful message or aborting the install <14> that's a crappy installer <11> YEAH!!! <12> yeah, a useful messsage lik e"Hit F6 to install drivers". nah, nothing useful there <12> or mentions in every motherboard and hard drive manual that you need to hit f6 and install drivers <12> I have 22 <12> years in computer systems engineering and operation. <12> besides, he was an IT professional too, if you can read <14> bofh``, that's a bull**** answer. at that point, you DON'T KNOW that you need extra drivers yet. <12> windows has needed a driver floppy for non ide drives since nt4 <12> doesn't say much for your friends <12> you do if you read the manual, Thuryn <14> and it still doesn't mean that the installer should HANG UP when it encounters teh problem <12> or if you have any clue about windows <14> another example: it hangs when it encounters my wife's D-Link wireless card. <14> just locks hard <14> remove the card, install windows, install card, install drivers. works perfectly. <12> yep, windows fault you have a cheap wireless card. windows should work perfectly with EVERY bit of every hardware hout there, in every combination possible <12> loil <14> how about: using a more conservative installer that looks for a hard drive to use via stable drivers and then TELLING YOU that it didn't find one and THEN prompting you for drivers, rather than prompting you for something you don't know you need yet and then punishing you later by hanging and not telling you why. <11> Someone do a ?? getoverit quick <12> lol <16> ?? cheese <12> wine, good idea. though a bit early. ;) <16> ;p <12> wonder what goes with a fried potato breakfast. :) <12> hahha actually, if it was done, my coffee wine would probably be appropriate. :D <11> 840KB/s... <drool> <12> nice <11> It's just disgusting... the speedtest I did a bit ago was 6780/5461 :P <17> My new hard drive (WD 320gb 16mb sata2) produces a low 'hum' that is more pronounced than my other HDDs. you can feel some vibration in my desk even. Is this possibly an unbalanced hard drive or is it because the drive has 3 platters maybe? <12> could be unbalanced, I'd guess it's just a noisier drive though <13> well bofh`` is kind of right... i am an idiot in his matter... however not a total idiot. it seems i might have bios settings wrong because i can get hung at the 39 minutes to go if i load the drivers after F6 or if i dont.
