<0> is there a way to run sfc if windows won't boot?
<1> no, your best bet is a repair install at that point
<1> ?? repairinstall
<2> repairinstall == http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341 | http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic8356.html
<1> use second link
<1> has pictures
<0> hehe ok thanks
<3> port what type of oatmeal you get?
<3> i jsut made apple cinnimon
<3> and i added cinnomin sugar to it
<1> goddammit
<4> Janger: golden brown sugar
<4> thats all they had at 7/11
<4> :D
<3> NOT BAD
<3> caps

<3> did you use milk or water
<3> lord
<3> try another code channel
<3> im sure they know multiple codes
<0> ok.. Im confused
<0> I'm*
<1> how the **** can you be confused with PICTURES?
<0> I'm not, hang on
<3> lord
<3> go into #c++
<3> 300 poeple in tehre
<3> might get "some" help
<1> I am going to lunch
<3> goood
<3> perfekt
<3> i hope you got rid of 2k3
<3> and put it back to XP
<0> when I upgraded my computer (everything but gpu), I installed windows on my new sata drive. Windows, or the drive, picked K: for the drive letter. Now, I can access the drive as D: in recovery console, and a BartPE cd let me scan it as D:, but the install is not available for repair. The only one there is the one on C:, which is old, probably incompatible, and left there only because I'm lazy.
<5> how would I go about taking the data from my boot IDE and storage IDE and putting them on my new SATA drive and then booting from the SATA?
<0> I think I have the right to be confused
<3> barto
<3> ghost it.
<3> no
<5> ok and then when I boot up the SATA will be c: right?
<3> you have the right to be an idiot.
<0> ok.
<3> Yes
<3> ghsot your system drive first
<3> then add your storage drive
<0> anyone got the patience to help an idiot out?
<3> or dont even touch the storange drive and just drag and drop it over or something
<3> lol
<5> ywah
<5> its the boot drive I am concerned about
<0> my computer has turned on me
<6> it has begun
<0> for some reason the crash has made the sata drive change letter from k: to d:, as well as making the windows installation on it invisible to winxp setup. Even though it detects the disk/partition.
<0> I guess the drive change could cause the loss of will to boot, but it doesn't explain why the windows installation isn't detected
<0> it's those gremlins :(
<0> I hate to surrender like this, reinstalling everything is !(teh funnay)
<5> which is a better version of Norton Ghost, 8, 9 or 10?
<5> oh also does it make a difference performance/fragmentation wise if I make a seperate swap partition at the front of my drive as opposed to just having one c: drive with a set pagefile size?
<1> leave the page file on the c drive
<1> and let windows manage it
<0> you normally want enough RAM to avoid paging
<1> joxter: windows will page anyway
<1> pagefile = 1.5 - 2 times size of physical mem
<0> still? 2GB is almost common these days, 3-4GB pagefile sounds a bit much
<1> if you need that much ram, then you're doing some serious processing
<6> let windows manage it
<4> bizack
<4> ^-Lord-^ did you get it?
<5> I have a SATA 150 and an ata/100... SATA is my boot drive would it be better performance wise in winxp to put the pagefile partition on the front of the IDE or the SATA?
<1> no
<1> still driving me INSANE
<4> hmm
<1> Bartokomo: we are not going to provide you opinions on every single drive configuration you install in that machine every day
<1> Treval?
<5> lord I haven't done anything yet
<7> Bartokomo: i would say performance wise its better to have the partition on a different drive than the system

<5> trying to figure out best option
<5> guybrush even though it is ATA/100?
<7> ehm, the swapfile
<7> there is no partition
<7> yes
<5> guy I make swap partition
<5> at front of drive
<7> yeah ok
<7> that doesnt matter tho, its the same physical drive
<6> why would you make swap partition at front of drive?
<5> isn't it quicker there?
<0> doubt you'll notice
<7> Bartokomo: the quickest is to have enough ram
<6> if anything, put swap on a different spindle. fornt of your drive is better for system files. the idea is to not use swap at all if possible
<7> various disk options wont make that much diff
<7> disk is always slow
<5> yes but from discussion yesterday winxp uses swap NO MATTER WHAT
<5> even if set to 0 or no pagefile
<5> winxp still uses one
<6> if you have not pagefile it cannot swap
<7> Bartokomo: you shouldnt have 0 swap
<7> if you have a lot of ram it wont use much swap
<6> if you have 2 spindles, put the swap on the spindle that does not have your system. let windows manage the size. any questions?
<5> ok cool
<7> ManKind: manage size? ugh
<7> I always set it at a fixed size
<6> ?
<5> so I will put the swap on the ATA/100 and boot on my SATA
<6> Guybrush` i know this, but windows calculates for you
<7> but then again, i dont bother to make a separate partition for swap, so i prefer the swap file to be a constant size to avoid fragmentation
<5> yeah thats why I do seperate partition at front of drive on other chain
<6> yeah, a dedicated swap partition does nothing
<5> dedicated partition lets you set the location and prevents fragmentation
<1> bull****
<5> how so?
<1> with a dynamic file, fragmentation is a given
<5> yeah I don't use dynamic
<5> I set the entire partition size as set swap file
<1> um, the pagefile by its very nature is a dynamic file
<5> hrm, my disk scans don't show fragmentation?
<1> and if what you were doing were best practice, it would be included in textbooks and used everywhere
<5> many tech sites on the net recommended it
<5> thats why I did it
<5> in the first place
<5> they said seperate IDE chain, partition in front of the drive, set file size
<1> to understand it, you have to understand what fragmentation is
<5> file info split up in different locations
<1> ok, WHY is it split up into different locations?
<5> dunno that....
<1> uh huh
<5> writes to closest free space?
<1> because information is written into available blocks. if the block is not large enough for the info, the remainder is written into the next available block.... even if it's on another platter.
<1> where it's written is based on the toc
<8> What colour should I paint my room?
<1> pink
<1> NEXT!!!
<8> ,,,
<1> that would be ...
<1> NEXT!!!
<8> Seriously... I want something different than the baige/white deal but I don't want anything off the wall
<1> well if you're painting it, won't it be ON the wall?
<1> d'oh!
<1> NEXT!!!
<9> haha
<8> Ok, Mr. ****in Smart ***
<8> Don't talk to me
<7> set page file size, run diskeeper swapfile defrag
<1> what the **** is your problem?
<8> What is yours?
<1> I don't have one... if you can't take a joke, you're in the wrong ****ng channel;
<7> if he cant take a joke, he is on the wrong ****ing internet
<1> Guybrush`: he's a she and stay out of it
<8> I'm not the one being a prick about it :/ I just wanted a simple opinion that was serious not something smart *** over and over again. :/
<10> no cursing pls
