Open run from the start menu and type sfc /scannow Have your windows XP cd handy, it will ask you for it. | For more info, see --> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310747 <6> just to be sure, can you tell me how to disable com1 port? <0> in your bios <6> but the serial cable was connected to my computer and to the cable modem. if the cable modem fried, then I'm sure it did something to my computer aswell <6> I mean can't I disable the driver in xp? <0> well if nothing inside is fried it should be fine <6> serial bus driver? <0> just turn the serial port off in your bios <0> then delete the device in device manager <6> I just want to see. i'm convinced that you can't be a coincidence. my computer has never failed. this is the first time ever <6> whats the device name in device manager? <6> its under USB? <0> why would it be under USB? <6> system devices? or usb controllers? <0> there should be a COM1 and COM2 or SERIAL option <6> those are the only 2 relavent folders <0> serial and USB arent the same <0> and if you remove the device in there it'll just detect again on next boot unless you disable it in the bios <0> even if you tell windows to disable the device it will not be disabled if its still active in the bios <6> okay cool <6> thanks man. I'll brb let me try your advice :-) <6> hey redhook <0> yeah <6> I just formed my idea of disabling drivers from this site <6> http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1643&page=7 <6> Find and highlight the device in question, right click it and select 'disable' from the menu. This will cause Windows to effectively ignore the device's existence until you re-enable it, and should fix your booting problems. <0> dsabeing drivers DOES NOT disable the deivce <0> it just tells windows to ignore it
