<0> so are you booting from another windows installation on another drive? Is that where you can see it? <1> Yes. I'm booting from a regular IDE drive. <0> hmm <1> Into Windows XP. <1> The IDE drive was cloned over to the S-ATA drive using Partition Magic. It warned the drive might not be bootable, but it said the same thing when I was copying from IDE to IDE... <0> ahh <1> So I figured I'd go ahead with the copy anyway. I get the feeling I'm missing something deceptively simple here... <0> there is your problem most likely, you need to have the driver for your SATA chipset installed, the only way I know to do that would be to do a clean install <1> You mean the controller? Windows installed it when I booted back in after sticking the drive in the box. <0> sounds also like the MBR is looking for the IDE drive by default if you cloned it <1> Or at least, it told me it did. Perhaps it was lying!! <0> yes, the controller <1> Ooh. <1> Hmmm. <1> This makes my brain hurt. <0> best bet would be a clean install then copy all your stuff over, might be an easier way, but that is how I would do it
<1> Clean install of WinXP you mean? <0> yes <1> Ugh. :P <1> I don't relish the thought of that at all.. <0> just make sure you have your SATA drivers handy on a disk when you do it <1> Okay. So I could probably just reinstall <1> Whoop. <0> might be your best bet <1> I could probably just reinstall Windows on the System partition of the S-ATA drive, and just make sure along the way that I have the drivers handy. <1> So...these drivers would be the ones on the CD that came with my motherboard? <1> My chipset drivers? <0> what kind of mobo do you have? <1> ASUS A8N-E. <1> Just bought it a couple days ago. <1> I love it so far. :) <0> oh ok Nforce 4, good pick <1> Is it? Well, good to know. :D The guy at the store actually picked it for me. <0> I dont know a whole lot about that board, but Im going to ***ume that you only have the SATA ports native to the chipset on that board <1> I hadn't upgraded my system for, oh, 3 years or so. So needless to say I was a bit behind on the hardware side of things...I had no clue. <1> I would suspect that's the case. <0> I have an Nforce 4 board as well, but 2 seperate SATA controllers <1> That's something I'm curious about. Windows wants to install both Parallel and Serial ATA controllers. Why is that? <0> that is due to the chipset, the Nforce 4 chipset has both <1> And both need to be installed? <0> if you ever set up a RAID array, you can also span it across the SATA and IDE ports <0> they will be installed by default <0> I can't remember how I did mine, I set it up some time back <1> Well, I want to run this system just with the S-ATA drive. <1> I was getting worried that maybe that wasn't possible. <0> yes, it's possible, just a little more work to get it working <1> Awesome. :P <1> Hey, would a Windows repair do the trick, as opposed to a clean install? <0> possibly, you could try it, but Im not real sure what that would accomplish if anything for your particular situation <1> Well, if it doesn't, I suppose there's always the alternative. <1> Thanks very much for your help, k3rnel. :) <0> no problem, usually Im more perky but its late and Im tired lol <1> Take care. And get some sleep. :D <0> thanks :D <2> hey, one of my laptops that has a wireless card says its connected to the router with a very good signal, but i cant ping anything, not even the router, any sugestions? <2> err.. wait, i can get the router <2> but no internet <2> well, i get like A 80% loss when pinging the router <3> hi, when I click on a .wmv link, the movie automatically opens in windows media player. when I click a .mpg/.mpeg link, nothing happens. <3> how do I force IE to open links up in media player? the option "do not play videos in web pages" is checked. <4> ok my pc is making this weird sound <4> whiiiiiiir <3> get a new fan <4> oh <4> its the fan <4> ? <3> well considering all you said was "my pc is making this weird sound whiiiir" I don't really have much information to properly diagnose your problem. <3> but considering fans generate practically all the noise you hear from the computer <3> aside from the hard drive spinning <5> hello. I had some non-saved document pasted in wordpad and my computer crashed. is there a way to retrieve it? perhaps it's saved in temporary folder or somewhere <6> windows xp wont let me change irq numbers <6> and my bios doesn't have much functionality either <7> XBOX 360 for sale!!!!
