<10> Anyone in here run a web server or know a better channel to check out for help? I'm setting up a new web server (2k3 serveR), and I own a domain that is currently being hosted by another company. I do not have a static IP. What would be the proper method of configuring the server and getting the domain moved over? I was thinking setup DHCP, DNS, Active Dir, then call hosting company and tell them my ip to move it to, any tips would be great
<11> ken_: If you don't have a static IP then you shouldn't be running your own DNS.
<10> shoudn't or can't?
<10> hehe
<11> Can't, then.
<11> If you're going to be like that about it.
<10> well
<10> this is just a box to mess around with
<10> not production or anything
<11> ****ing with DNS can affect others and their work. Don't do it unless you know what you're doing.
<11> It's like running an SMTP server. If you don't know how to make sure it's not an open relay then you shouldn't be running an SMTP server because that can **** **** up for the rest of us.
<10> nah this is a personal connection and my own box
<10> just to mess around and learn on
<11> If you're putting your dynamic IP in NS records for your domain with your registrar then you're annoying the rest of the world.
<11> There are plenty of free DNS providers -- I use ZoneEdit.com, myself -- that respond to various different dynamic DNS update clients. Use one of those and run one of the clients on your end.
<11> Since ZoneEdit's nameservers don't change, you can give those to your registrar for your NS entries.
<11> Then when your IP changes it'll update ZoneEdit and your records.
<10> hmmm
<11> Of course, I have no idea if any of these clients are available for Windows; I used to do all this with Linux.
<10> i'm guessing zoneedit isnt free though...at that point it might be just as easy to pay for a static ip
<11> But putting your dynamic IP in the NS entries for your domain is just being foolish. That's not how DNS was designed to work.
<11> ken_: What part of "plenty of free DNS providers" was it that confused you?
<10> ah ok, sorry my experience with those like dyndns etc they are free for a bit then they try to charge ya
<4> dyndns does not charge
<4> hasnt charged me
<10> this was long ago, i dont really remember the details but i know it stopped working and asked me to upgrade or something
<4> well yeah ofcourse they want you to upgrade
<4> DARRRR
<10> ok well I'm not particularly tied to running my own dns
<4> I mean how do you think they make money
<4> it certainly isn't because they charitably give away dns heh
<10> i just want my own domain
<10> i know heh and thats why I figured it might be less painful to just get a static ip, not sure what rates I can get tho for those around here
<12> notebook hardware control can effectively double battery power with proper settings.
<2> joe-7: zoneedit gives away dns :)
<2> oops. should have scrolled back more and read, upon return. nm :)
<10> how does zoneedit work...will my domain point to my current IP or will my domain point to zoneedit and they just forward it on to me?
<2> zoneedit.com. read. learn
<10> it says it will point the domain to my ip, but for instance if i did a reverse lookup on my ip would I see my domain?
<2> "I couldn't orgasm because you looked to much like jesus" hehe
<2> "I only pray to god when I have an STD"
<2> how often does this whore get STDs?
<8> often enough to need to pray.
<11> ken_: No, you wouldn't, because you don't have control over your ISP's zone(s).
<11> For that you'd need a static IP and ***istance from your ISP. They own the netblock.
<10> but regular lookups would work ok?
<10> like normal, not fowarding to my ip, i.e someone goes to mydomain.com and gets forwarded to 234.64.234.1 or whatever my ip is
<11> Correct.
<10> ok cool
<2> how can these comcast dvrs really be this bad? 3 new eps of friday shows I have setup and none are in the todos
<9> Soak.
<2> I never realized there were DVRs that made VCRs look appealing :)
<13> whats the best ipod video converter
<14> quick question. if i set my wireless network with no protection but setup router to only accept specific mac addresses, will that keep my network secure from my neighbor?
