<sartan> i tried yesterday but couldn't pay attention
<Thuryn> godlie-, yes. WINS is always on UDP port 137
<Jet> Charlize Theron in hot outfits
<Reign`> but the firewall is filtering the port
<Jet> worth the watch
<Reign`> so I cant connect
<Reign`> and I wanna open it
<Thuryn> it will go to the IP you specify on that port and look for a WINS service.
<sartan> the Windows firewall?
<godlie-> k thats what i thought, so the answer to my question was yes
<Thuryn> yes
<Thuryn> ;)
<sartan> Windows XP Service pack 2?
<Reign`> yeah
<Reign`> yes
<godlie-> thuryn
<sartan> Reign`: okay, I see. Go to start, settings, control panel, network connections. Right-click on your internet NIC, and press properties. go to the advanced tab, and under the 'windows firewall box' press settings
<godlie-> once i do that, will the printers work no problem?
<godlie-> or are there other things necessary to be configured?
<sartan> If you don't know what to do after you get to that screen, Reign`, let me know and I'll walk you along futher.
<Thuryn> godlie-, that should be it.
<Reign`> erm
<Reign`> as I said I dont have visual access
<godlie-> by the way, what other problems were you having before you set up the wins server?
<Reign`> im not trying to do it on that machine
<godlie-> because right now, icant share the printers at all!
<Reign`> but on a remote one
<Reign`> which all I got to it is cmd line right now
<Thuryn> godlie-, well, i had to solve one other problem before the WINS server that would have been related.
<godlie-> it wont even work at all in the slighest, the printers only work on the local pc's
<sartan> telnet?
<Reign`> yeah
<Thuryn> godlie-, i had to make sure that all of the computers in the office were properly added to the Active Directory domain.
<sartan> Reign`: you can use netsh to manipulate the firewall
<godlie-> ok that may be my problem too
<godlie-> what did you do to take care of that problem?
<Thuryn> godlie-, only then would i be able to set a printer on one machine with permissions for users in the Active Directory.
<Reign`> is it built in or should I get it somewhere?
<sartan> netsh firewall add radmin.exe
<sartan> er
<Reign`> hmm
<Reign`> let me try
<Thuryn> godlie-, for this stuff to work consistently, you're going to need to do three things. ready?
<godlie-> yea, when i tried to set the security of the printer on the local machine it didnt have the active directory tree so i can select active directory users
<godlie-> ready
<godlie-> !
<sartan> netsh firewall allowedprogram C:\Program files\RAdmin\Radmin.exe RAdmin ENABLE
<Thuryn> 1) set up WINS on the domain controller.
<sartan> something like that, Reign`
<godlie-> ROGER!
<sartan> you can also open it up per-port
<Reign`> thanks, I'll try it now
<sartan> just run netsh /?
<Reign`> will do
<Thuryn> then your DC is your "location server" for everything, via WINS, LDAP, DNS, whatever. with me so far?
<s4m04> i'm driving my date nutz with my nested unconditional loop romance
<godlie-> Right
<s4m04> p00r baby
<s4m04> :(
<Thuryn> godlie-, 2) set up ALL of your computers, servers, everything so that they are all members of the AD domain.
<Jet> s4m04: and I've heard that chicks totally dig the computer references
<Jet> so you should say that in front of her
<sartan> LOOP ME
<sartan> ITERATE ITERATE
<sartan> AHHHH MEMFREE
<Jet> CALL ME RECURSIVELY
<Cody-Nap> well
<Cody-Nap> my plan for a nap failed
<Jet> CLIMB MY BINARY TREE
<sartan> strMoan = CALLOC(char *uNF, sizeof(mypenis))
<Jet> haha
<Thuryn> godlie-, 3) set ALL of your computers, servers, everything so that they use the DC as their primary WINS server.
<godlie-> in other words, log in using active users created under AD, just select the DOMAIN for the AD and thats that
<godlie-> right?
<godlie-> ok with you so far
<sartan> haha i think that last one was clever. =(
<sartan> =) *
<Jet> sartan: but the second parameter can't be null
<Thuryn> no, adding a computer to the AD must be done by the Administrator.
<Jet> :)
<sartan> Jet: har de har har
<sartan> hehe =)
<godlie-> as long as i understand what you mean when you say set up all comptuers servers everything so they are al members of the AD domain
<Jet> okay, well, that was fun
<godlie-> that is the first thign i did
<godlie-> asl ong as i undrestand you correctly
<Jet> someone entertain me now
<Thuryn> godlie-, i don't think they are...
<sartan> ***xuhally?
<godlie-> ok, how do i make sure of this what is the procedure
<godlie-> incase i didnt do this properly
<godlie-> this is my first sbs 03 setup
<godlie-> so i am new to this
<godlie-> i ll tell yoyu what i did
<Thuryn> godlie-, test: right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.
<Thuryn> godlie-, click the "Computer Name" tab.
<Thuryn> godlie-, what does it show for "domain"?
<godlie-> my computer > properties then computer name then change domain
<godlie-> then select my domain
<Thuryn> yes
<godlie-> it shows the DOMAIN that iam on
<godlie-> no longer the workgroup
<Thuryn> good
<Thuryn> you're there
<godlie-> OK thats good then
<Thuryn> so on THAT computer, all you have to do is set up the WINS server and you're done.
<Reign`> thanks sartan it works :]
<Thuryn> on to the next computer
<Thuryn> ;)
<godlie-> and then you think the printer will be sharable after that?
<godlie-> hmm
<godlie-> will i have to do any special configuring of the wins server after installing it?
<Thuryn> godlie-, nope. WINS runs pretty well on its own.
<godlie-> k good
<godlie-> TY sir
<Thuryn> np
<godlie-> i just hope this is going to solve the problem
<Thuryn> just remember to set the permissions on the shared printer based on AD accounts, not local system accounts.
<godlie-> how did you realize that this is what caused your problem with the printers?
<godlie-> in otherwords, add the users from the ACtive directory
<Thuryn> godlie-, i forget. either i did a packet capture, or i said, "Well, it just can't find it. WINS is a location protocol. It *shouldn't* need it, but what the hell? why not?" (and I set it up and it worked)
<Thuryn> godlie-, I remember now.
<kawfee> I just did a fresh install of 2k and the install did not see my CD-RW drive. What can I do to force it to see the drive?
<Thuryn> godlie-, I also found two printers in the network with the same name after that. bad.
<Xterria> hey i've got a problem with Windows XP Internet connection sharing, could anyone help me?
<Thuryn> godlie-, yes, add the users from active directory.
<godlie-> because the problem i am having right now is this, when i went into the security tab for the printer i am trying to share, I tried to add AD users to the share, but they were not there only the local computer users were available, was this fixed for you once you added WINS?
<BaRFMaN> isn't WINS installed and turned on by default in an AD domain?
<Thuryn> BaRFMaN, yes, but clients don't necessarily point to it, and sometimes admins turn it off because they think they don't need it.
<peerce> kawfee; are there any errors in the device manager?
<kawfee> peerce: Yes there are a few.
<BaRFMaN> I still need to remember to turn it back on for my servers
<BaRFMaN> I think all my clients are using the uni's central WINS server right now
<BaRFMaN> we turned it off ages ago when there was a WINS security flaw announced
<godlie-> thuryn, i didnt turn it off
<godlie-> nor did i set it up
<godlie-> :/
<Thuryn> godlie-, and it wasn't installed by default on your DC? weird.
<godlie-> I dont know I have not looked
<godlie-> what is the process?
<godlie-> or, what is the service?
<sartan> svchost.exe
<godlie-> called?
<kawfee> peerce: There is an error for a M*** controller, modem, and a communications port. None of them are a cd-rw drive.
<godlie-> in otherwords if i try to start or stop it what is it called?
<Thuryn> BaRFMaN, the only WINS vulnerability i've seen in a long time is the port 42 one, which is only used for replication. a simple IP Sec policy can protect against that (or the security patch, or both)
<kawfee> 2k previously saw this device.
<Thuryn> Windows Internet Name Service
<sartan> WINDOWS.
<godlie-> nbtstat -rr what is that for ?
