<avrFreak> Alrighty! System comes up, goies through POST, starts to boot. Tries to boot from first CD ()no disk), so it drops to trying to boot from the second CD <FKnight`> as far as booting from CD, that's weiord <avrFreak> it gives e a "Boot CD:" prompt. I hit <enter> and it starts accessing the second CD ROM. " <avrFreak> "Ahhhh," says I, "*NOW* we're in business." Not so fast...after a few seconds the dsrive access light goes out, the drive spinds down, and the system starts reading and booting fromt he freaking HDD again...so naturally, I get the BSOD again. <FKnight`> the same BSOD ? <avrFreak> I can't even do a repair install, or a new install, because I can't get the machine to boot! <avrFreak> (additional note: the disk drives that will not boot on the XP-1700 boot up just fine on the PIII-450...thAT'S WHAT i AM USING RIGHT NOW <avrFreak> ok..THAT'S THE END OF THRE LIST <FKnight`> Ok, well, this is how you fix the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSOD from Windows booting from the hard drive: put the old motherboard back, boot up, install hdd controller drivers from new motherboard. <avrFreak> oops <FKnight`> then put new motherboard in <FKnight`> as far as your CD not booting right, I have no idea <avrFreak> Ahhhhhhhhh...noew *THAT* makes sense, Fknight <FKnight`> but it's separate <avrFreak> Fknight: I am going to try your suggestion, but I *DO* have somne questions <FKnight`> hangon there's a kb article <avrFreak> 1) how can the system clsaim it "cannot access the boot device," when it clearly *HAS* accessed the boot device, to bring up the WIn2K startup splash screen, and it has obtained the teext for the errormessage from that very same boot device? <FKnight`> ok, I explained that, but I'll retype it : <FKnight`> :D <FKnight`> when the intital boot up process starts, Windows is using a base driver set to get the hard drive going so it can read in the OS <FKnight`> after it gets enough of the OS in to load drivers, it starts loading the REAL drivers <FKnight`> if the system kept booting with the base drivers, it would be VERY slow <FKnight`> cause there would be no DMA access, or any other enhancements by the controller drivers <FKnight`> unfortunately, unlike Windows 9x, Microsoft decided to even cripple safe mode <FKnight`> in Windows 9x, your system would still boot, but just run slow <FKnight`> and you could still install the drivers <avrFreak> Ah. Now THAT I understand. I have virtually no knowledge of WIndows internals. Thnkas Fknight <avrFreak> have to go <FKnight`> hold on <FKnight`> I'm finding a kb article :D <avrFreak> wife is breathing down my neck...I need to go <FKnight`> yeah it's what I thought <avrFreak> I'll be bacvk in a while <FKnight`> that shouldwork <FKnight`> good luck <Segmental> yo FKnight` <Segmental> u here still?? <Segmental> FKnight`? <Segmental> http://www.dcodesoftware.com/images/huh.jpg <Segmental> wtf is this? <Segmental> that was after using the login <Segmental> whee thx <Segmental> :L( <DefiantN> so I just installed about 50 critical security updates... why is it win95 never had this problem? <Thuryn> DefiantN, it did. <FKnight`> Problem? Microsoft releasing more patches to FIX PROBLEMS <FKnight`> is a PROBLEM <FKnight`> I've heard it all now <FKnight`> You want them to go back to Windows 95 days? <FKnight`> when they didn't release patches? <FKnight`> don't install them :D <DefiantN> I was referring to the vulunerabilites <FKnight`> all software has vulnerabilities. Microsoft just patches there's more. <FKnight`> because they're under attack more <SD70MAC> Which problem are you referring to? And why are you JUST NOW installing these patches? <Thuryn> DefiantN, windows 9x had *many* vulnerabilities, some of which were never fixed. <DefiantN> I just reinstalled windows <FKnight`> *their's <SD70MAC> Ahh, so you had autopatcher on hand? <SD70MAC> FK: you used them correctly the first time. :D <Gullb3rG> when i start Photoshop at my computer my internet dies. Some1 know whats the problem ? I have tryed to shut down the most process but it still shut down internet <Thuryn> *theirs <FKnight`> SD70MAC: but I used "there's" <DefiantN> I used winupdate <SD70MAC> Oh, that one. <Segmental> FKnight`? <FKnight`> Segmental hmm ? <SD70MAC> Then yeah, their's. <Thuryn> no, *theirs <Segmental> FKnight` i tried the ****ing client install on his pc, it wants a MANAGED SERVER running <SD70MAC> No, the apostrophe is correct. <Segmental> even tho MY pc with the SERVER AV is shown in list <FKnight`> you do have a managed server running I thought <FKnight`> that ****s <FKnight`> now <Segmental> THIS IS BS <Thuryn> no, it isn't <FKnight`> my server has always been in a domain <FKnight`> I don't know if that matters <Thuryn> i'll go look it up <SD70MAC> Please do. <Segmental> THIS IS BS <Segmental> :( <Thuryn> http://englishlanguage.allinfoabout.com/difficulties/theirs.html <Jet> heh, stick my head out the door to grab the flyers, it's raining <Segmental> all i want to do is prevent him from ****ing his up again <Thuryn> it's "theirs" for possessive third person plural <FKnight`> so anyway that's the thing now ... if you DON'T release patches to your vulnerabilities. . you're "more secure" <FKnight`> got it :D <Thuryn> what bothers me is that i had to look it up. :( <Jet> FKnight`: what bugs me is everyone made a huge deal out of the WMF vulnerability... yet QT 7.0.3 had huge holes that Apple fixed, you hardly hear anything about it <FKnight`> yeah <FKnight`> well dude <Thuryn> Jet, that's not what the big deal was. <FKnight`> Apple is just ... <FKnight`> well <FKnight`> Apple is Jesus. <Segmental> [10:56] <Segmental> i did Client install <Segmental> [10:57] <Segmental> A managed client cannot connect to a unmanaged Seconary Server <Segmental> [10:57] <Segmental> It must connect to either a managed Secondary Server or directly to a Primary Server <Segmental> [10:57] <Segmental> plz explain <SD70MAC> Hmm. That is an obscure rule I'll probably not remember. <FKnight`> right click on the server in the symantec system center <FKnight`> and do "make primary server" <Segmental> where? <Segmental> where is symantec system center <FKnight`> symantec system center is on the av server <Thuryn> the big deal was that there was no decent fix and no real workaround. <FKnight`> if you installed it from the sav corp cd <FKnight`> it's separate from the av server itself <FKnight`> it's an MMC console <Segmental> o ok <Jet> Thuryn: qt opened certain file types IN the browser without prompting the user and loading of certain malformed types of images and other media could cause code to be executed <Segmental> ok i did mmc at start => run <Segmental> i went to Add/Remove Snapin <Segmental> i do not see symantec system center <FKnight`> Segmental you have to install it <Thuryn> jet, but did the fix come out with the vulnerability announcement? <FKnight`> it's separate from the av software <FKnight`> it's on the autorun menu <Segmental> oh <Segmental> im using v10 btw <Segmental> incase u got confused heh <Segmental> oh i see it now <Segmental> Administrator Tools <Jet> Thuryn: http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/15732 <Jet> no, the vulnerability was published Dec 2 <FKnight`> Microsoft gets in trouble for waiting to write a patch before issuing an announcement. The slashdotters are mad that Microsoft fixes problems before they get a chance to hack people. <Jet> I don't think QT 7.0.4 was released until January 11 <Thuryn> FKnight`, yup <SD70MAC> Mmmmm. Food. <Segmental> i love FKnight` <Segmental> he rox <Jet> But see, did you konw that QT was vulnerable for a month? <Jet> nope <Jet> no one did <Thuryn> it's PR vs. responsible and timely announcements <Thuryn> they can't win <Thuryn> i think they should wait until a) someone else announces it or b) they have a fix <FKnight`> yeah me too <Thuryn> (or a workaround) <Jet> that makes them look reactionary <FKnight`> to me, it makes them look responsible <Thuryn> jet, but we already established that they can't win. ;) <Jet> well, I'm talking slashdot perceptions <Jet> ya <Thuryn> oh, screw /. <Jet> it's lose lose <FKnight`> hehehe <Jet> of course, they should not release buggy software in the first place <Jet> :)
