<FKnight`> morganix: that would have the exact same capabilities as SP2's firewall <rworks> morganix: Um, a software host-based firewall and a hardware firewall are completely different beasts. <digidog> install linux for a firewall so you can be completely uneducated about what it is your missing <rworks> I don't consider either a good replacement for the other. <digidog> linksys router and sp2 <digidog> works fine for me <digidog> though i ahve the uber linksys <rworks> And yeah, your linux box that isn't properly administered will become your biggest security hole. <FKnight`> morganix: the problem is, *you're* not looking for a firewall <digidog> the metal linksys's rock <rworks> Contrary to popular ./ opinion, Linux is *not* more secure than Windows. <FKnight`> that's why you're saying SP2's firewall ****s <rworks> And a lot harder to learn to administer. <digidog> /. <rworks> Yeah. <rworks> That. <rworks> :) <rworks> I'm stoned. <digidog> :) <digidog> i was <rworks> You should come get stoned with me sometime. <digidog> ive got some good **** here <peerce> wtf. p3-450 with a 7200rpm ATA drive should be able to write over 2MB/second to disk, shouldn't it? and handle over 2MB/sec on 100baseT ?!? <digidog> but dude <rworks> Then I'll come there! <rworks> ;) <digidog> i only smoke like 1-2 hits <digidog> cmon <peerce> with linux, I mean. <rworks> NOt tonight though. <rworks> I'm too stoned! <rworks> :) <digidog> well thats good <peerce> i'm logged onto linux, and using ncftp to fetch something from another machine on my LAN, and its only doing 2MB/sec <digidog> cause im weirded out when guys come to my house @ 3am <rworks> peerce: I would think so. <rworks> Unless you accidentally installed KDE. <rworks> Then it'll be good for maybe 1/10 that. <rworks> ;) <peerce> hell, no. its my firewall/server :D <digidog> god damn <rworks> digidog: As would be your neighbors. <digidog> i installed this baracuda like 10 minutes ago <digidog> and at 3:00 am <digidog> Blocked 176 <peerce> kupdate is going nuts, load factor is around 5 <rworks> digidog: You have DSL at home? <digidog> yes <digidog> business <rworks> I'm about to get rid of DSL. <rworks> Going to cable. <digidog> i hate to get rid of cable <rworks> I get **** speeds. <digidog> i had cable for 5 years <digidog> no 7 <digidog> but in my area <rworks> Cause of the distance from my CO. <digidog> cable ****s <rworks> Oh. <FKnight`> I'm not far from my CO <rworks> Why does it ****? <digidog> and they finally had to let me out of my contract <FKnight`> but there's something between the CO and my house <digidog> dunno <FKnight`> so I can't get DSL <digidog> something really weird <digidog> they replaced the modem 3 times <digidog> redid the outside wiring <digidog> i would still get dropped/latency <rworks> FKnight`: My friend chose his house partly because of its distance from the CO. <rworks> :) <csm-> probably a bridge tap <digidog> not to mention <digidog> copmcast recently ****ed up <digidog> they isntalled these new modem/routers everywhere in dfw <digidog> and they are ALL broken <rworks> He's like 1500 feet on the line test. :) <digidog> we found it <csm-> they'll deny dsl service if there is a bridge tap between you and the CO <FKnight`> yeah must have been that <rworks> digidog: I'm getting Charter. <FKnight`> I got Roadrunner tho <FKnight`> so **** it <digidog> there is fttp here <csm-> no matter how close you are :/ <digidog> but no service <rworks> Getting 3mb/384 and 1 static IP. <csm-> yeah gimmie cable any day <csm-> **** a bunch of pppoe <FKnight`> cable company is closer to me too :D <digidog> i have a 384 up dsl account <digidog> 100/month <rworks> Which will be a challenge, because I really need almost 2. <FKnight`> I don't know if that matters or not <FKnight`> but the cable company is across the street <rworks> Ack, I really need 2. <digidog> but i never get over 256 <digidog> problem is <digidog> i dont know what my dsl phone number is <digidog> so if i call for support <digidog> im ****ed <FKnight`> I'm close enough to connect to my cable ISP over WiFi <morganix> "<rworks> morganix: Um, a software host-based firewall and a hardware firewall are completely different beasts." What would be the diffence between a hardware firewall and something like FREESCO? <csm-> i got 6meg down and 768k up for like 69/month <digidog> and your reality is substantialy different :) <rworks> morganix: I'm talking about the difference between a dedicated perimeter firewall and a host-based firewall like kerio. <csm-> and i get damn near all of it too <digidog> pfft <digidog> show me your dslreports <csm-> i dont rely on dslreports <rworks> I'm getting 384/384 <rworks> Which is pathetic. <FKnight`> I rely on my slow download speeds :D <FKnight`> not dsl reports :D <rworks> And why I'm going to cable. <csm-> i'll scp a file over it both ways and test it :) <FKnight`> I don't need dsl reports to tell me the Internet is slow <morganix> Good, so then an old box running FREESCO is a good idea? <rworks> Speakeasy has a really nice speed test. <peerce> wtf is FREESCO ? <rworks> http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ <pale_blue> free SCO? HA. <morganix> Freesco is based on the older but stable 2.0.38 Linux kernel. The kernel has been purposely pared down to provide basic network and IP routing duties. Many of the non-network related funtions have been removed. Freesco has a NAT router which handles the LAN traffic from one or more IP addresses and acts as a gateway to the Internet. With this, two or more computers may share one Internet connection. <morganix> A secure firewall is included. A firewall will stop unauthorised access from the Internet to the LAN. This will greatly reduce the chance of attacks by malicious hackers. Anyone with a direct, broadband Internet connection such as DSL or cable should have some form of firewall installed. <morganix> Freesco also includes on the floppy disk, the code for a print server and a DHCP server for the internal network. <morganix> Freesco offers a good foundation for building a larger, more powerful server. Other packages such as web servers and proxy servers may be added. This will however, add more complexity to the system and will require a hard drive to store the extra files. The Freesco Web ring has several sites with extra packages to add to Freesco. <morganix> Internet connections can be made with DSL, cable or dial-up modems. <digidog> god damn you <csm-> ugh <FKnight`> peerce: I don't know, but a linksys is worth less than the time he's spent here arguing over firewalls :D <peerce> 2.0 ?!? oh christ. <sartan> hey digidog do you have a degree <digidog> download speed: 3842 kbps <digidog> upload speed: 2812 kbps <digidog> yes sartan <morganix> didn't mean to do that. <sartan> k <peerce> dude, the 2.4 kernel is 100X better for firewalling. <peerce> iptables owns your *** <digidog> why? <sartan> iptables rocks. <digidog> ill stick with acl's <sartan> i am an iptables "Expert" according to monster.ca <digidog> on a pix <sartan> and I'll have to admit intermediate skills with PIX <sartan> only because pix can do so much more than iptables <peerce> have fun doing source IP based route preferences <digidog> that little pix 501 rocks for remote sites <sartan> cl*** maps. <sartan> peerce: the pix isn't a router
